CNET previews SIRIUS WiFi Radio

Ryan over at Orbitcast.com has discovered a great review on CNET about the Zing Player.

Rafe Needleman at CNET said that the SIRIUS-branded Zing player is scheduled to ship later this year.

It appears that the new device will receive SIRIUS content over the Internet, rather than the satellite network.

This opens up the possibility that SIRIUS may extend the service to a variety of Internet radio devices.

Digital music company Sonos already has a sophiticated package that allows you to stream WiFi Radio throughout your home, along with a slick full-color controller.

This opens up the possibility of SIRIUS coming out with a WiFi powered repeater, so you can have a SIRIUS zone in each room of your home. The possibilties are endless with an established standard such as WiFi.

  1. Does this mean that you can not get Sirius when you are outdoors, since there is no satellite feed?

How great would it be if it received signal from the satellite and/or internet signal. There wouldn't be too many places where you couldn't pick up a signal.

Depending on how they do it you may be able to get the signal. They can send the signal through satellites or cell phone towers.
  4. That may very well be the way to go. It would be the ideal way to get around the indoor issue. If Sirius pulled that off, I know I would be the first to get it.
  5. If it is or if it ins't the new portable radio, it still a nice looking unit!

And I would not be too far behind you...
  7. This might go over well in colleges- most have campus wide, wireless broadband.
  8. I am sure folks have heard this before from me but I will say it again. These gadgets are nice if you have extra cash and are a audiophile.

But if Sirius wants to put their service over the top, they need to appeal to the masses. S50 was close but the world likes live content. Americans are instant gratification consumers. The unit that works the closest to the radio "walkman" is going to sell.

Just look at the XM stuff. They may not all be great radios but their portables are popular.
  9. First I would have loved to see and iPod/Sirius unit. Hear a song you like, hit the select botton, next time you connect, it connects to iTunes Music Store and downloads the song automatically.

this unit is not designed to go outside. If I am using it in my car, how am I getting signal? So much for open sky equals content. If I am driving cross country, where is the wi-fi networks in the middle of Texas? or even in parts of Jersey?Great looking unit, put you need to be able to pick up the signal other then the internet or wifi.

I'm thinking this will be in ADDITION TO the new live portable.

According to this article, this IS the new portable. Then again, the media is never wrong, right?

No way.... if Sirius pulls something like that, bullshit.

If it is true the only thing that is bullshit is the lack of battery time and the true satellite coverage. If you read the article (not saying you didn't) it says the streaming is in addition to live reception 'on the go'.

Ah, if that's the case... cool! (Actually, no I didn't read it. I loathe Jacoby).
  15. The problem with that is going to be subscribers who live way out in the country. Heck, my *cell phone* doesn't work within 5 miles of my house, let alone wireless internet. We only got DSL service last year.

Consider yourself lucky, mine doesn't work anywhere near my house!
  18. One other big perk with this device could be air travel. I see Jet Blue is now providing in flight Wi-Fi and it will probably become standard on all flights here soon.

I can see the inflight wi-fi can be a costly feature. I can't imagine them giving that away for free. How does that even work once the plane is in flight. Must use simular system like the phones they use which is costly.

Considering they're charging for blankets and pillows these days... yea, can't imagine it being free.
  21. could a sat/terr/wi-fi car antenna be a possibility in the near future?
  22. This was reported on Satellite Standard this morning:

What to expect from the device commonly referred to as the SW100 or the Bellagio.
    1. Expect a form factor similar to the S50 in terms of size.

    2. Expect the unit to be equipped with an "internal" live antenna.

    3. Expect the unit to be equipped with a headphone antenna.

    4. Expect (similar to what Zing displayed) the unit to have WI-FI capability.
  23. Its all pure speculation, until Sirius releases some details.
