Walk The Dog Returns To SiriusBackstage

Walk The Dog

SIRIUSBackstage.com is happy to announce the return of Walk The Dog.

The concept behind Walk The Dog is to expand the SIRIUS listening experience beyond your favorite presets and discover all the great and diverse musical genres that SIRIUS has to offer.

The way that Walk The Dog works is every week we will be discovering three new SIRIUS music channels. There will be a channel that is consider popular, one that is considered somewhat popular, and one that is considered not so popular or that some have never tuned into before. Now of course opinions will vary from listener to listener, but the three channels each week will be very diverse so most everyone should have at least one channel that they will be discovering for the first time.

I encourage everyone participating to listen with an open mind. The goal of Walk The Dog is not to force you to listen to every music channel that SIRIUS offers but to encourage you to at least give every channel a try. There will be no rules as to how long or when during the week you have to listen the each channel all I ask is that you try to give each channel an hour of your weekly SIRIUS listening. During the week that the three channels are premiered there will be an open forum for us to discuss our thoughts and opinions of the channels.

New channels will be announced on Saturday with the listening experience starting on Monday and continuing through Saturday evening. Sundays will be dedicated to posting your final feelings of the channels and if you plan on listening to it in the future. There won’t be a set schedule to what channels will be played so if SIRIUS has any special programming or event on a channel we can schedule accordingly. It also gives us the ability to surprise everyone and we absolutely love surprises.

Full details can be found here.

All in all, I'm looking forward to this, as I was just recently thinking that I haven't given too many other channels a chance, having my LoC addiction and all.
  2. Bonus! I'll be listening...
  3. I'm really glad we're starting this up again.
I'm not too familiar with these 3 channels. I've probably never intentionally put on a country station in my life. But, this week I will try these channels.
  4. I'm looking forward of the return of "Walk The Dog". I have New Country preset and I enjoy listening to it every so often. Not familer with Left of Center and Classical Voices .
  5. So, do we post new threads each week or do we just keep posting over and over until this thread gets longer and longer?
  6. Hey now sox! Thanks for giving this thing another try. I have always been a rock n roller but, trying the country station for an hour won't be so bad I guess lol

Just wondering, how did you go about selecting the first 3 channels for this? Random pick or...?
  7. I'll be giving them a listen. It will be tough, Modern Country and Opera are the two genres I don't enjoy in music. We'll see though.

There will be a new thread every saturday for discussion of that weeks channels. This weekend got a little hectic for me with work but I'll be setting up the week one thread tonight when I get home.

I chose new country because the country music awards are next week and they are going to be having alot of programming for it. The other two were random.

btw. If theres anyone who is good with photoshop and feels like donating some time to make a cool sig pic for walk the dog it would be greatly appreciated.

Just a thought, but could you make a thread for each channel?

I just realized that SBS has created a whole new forum for Walk the Dog. That's perfect.
  12. I'm really looking forward to this. It should be great to read all the posts. It will take about five months to go through all the music channels at this pace. By that time, we'll have our annual channel updates, so we can add a few more weeks for the new channels.

For some channels, I think your opinion may change based on how long you listen throughout the week. As an example, if you listen to Classical Pops for just the minimum one hour, you may think it's pretty good. In that one hour, you'll hear some classical music you'll recognize. But if you listen for, say four hours each day, you'll realize they have an extremely limited list of pieces they play over and over. When people comment, I'd be interested to hear how long they listened over the week, to see if there's a difference in how people like the channel based on how long they listened.

That is cool! And it's cool that soxnationonline is the moderator...
  14. I think we should post a new thread for each channel, and the OP should post a detailed description of the channel, including highlighted shows and personalities.

Here is an example of how they did Folktown, which I guess doesn't exist anymore, in December of 2004

    http://www.siriusbackstage.com/forum...ad.php?t=57674

I think this is the way to go. I hope soxnationonline hears me.

I don't know anything about any of the channels up this week, or I'd do it myself.

Edit: Actually, I don't have permission to post a new topic. I was just going to copy the description from the What's On Sirius page on www.Sirius.com. I guess soxnationonline is the only one who can post new threads?

not to get too off-topic, but reading that description of Folk Town made me realize how much I miss it.
  16. To keep this forum on-topic, new threads will not be allowed except by SIRIUS Backstage staff or soxnationonline, who has been given moderator privilege to to create and stick/unstick threads just this forum.

I suggest a new thread for each channel to be stickied while those channels are active.
  17. I'm definatly down with each channel having its own thread as it seems to be a popular idea.

This way people will be able to listen and post about the channel even after the time has expired and the next dog is being walked, too. The sticky idea RyanM came up with is staring us right in the face. Good call. Looking forward to it. Listening to New Country right now.

Hey, we've been duped! That doesn't sound like a soxnationonline post. There's not even a hint of sarcasm in that post...you can't fool me! Who really posted that? Somebody better fess up to this immediately.

Seriously though, I'm not gonna partake in the country one, but all the others sound like a great return to "Walk The Dog".
  20. I'm trying so hard to keeping my Doo-Wop alive. Maybe I just don't know how this works. I'm sooo not puting it down. I'm just new to all of this.

I'll just keep on reading the different "threads"

    Have fun, deedee

Welcome to walk the dog deedee

basically we're going to be sampling 3 music channels every week until we've gotten to them all. Don't hesitate to answer any other questions you have. Welcome to walk the dog.
  22. Walk the dog is tougher for me now that Howard is coming back. Wish walk the dog was going on while Howard was on vacation.
  23. Got the S50 gathering some LEFT OF to listen to. I (like Chad) will not be listening to Country. I struggled through the Dixie Chicks on Howard, that's as close as I can get to Country.

    This is a great idea.
  24. Great idea, looking forward to participating!

that's a great idea for any s50 users.

as for not listening to any country - thats your choice but I would suggest trying each channel for the recommended minimum of one hour. By all rights change the channel if the dixie chicks do come on though.
  26. Oohh, it's starting! YAY! I'm gonna go put all these channels in my B presets now (I have nothing in there at the moment)

I must say that I myself tend to *despise* country. And while a fan of the classics, I also tend to steer clear of opera.

In preparation last night, I spent a hint of time on both New Country and Classical Voices last night to see if I'm going to be able to stomach it. As it turns out, both channels were tolerable for at least a few minutes.

I'm sure that the return of Walk the Dog will bring the occasional cringe, but I will be giving each channel at least an hour during their featured week. Isn't that what this exercise is all about?
  28. It's interesting to see how many people are unwilling or afraid to listen to certain types of music. I will def. be listening to all 3 for at least 3 hours this week. None of these 3 are on my presets so it will be fun.
  29. I'm glad to see Walk The Dog again. I tend to stick with my presets and forget that there are other channels that I should be checking out. I like LOC and have it as one of my presets, but I will definitely give the other 2 a listen.
  30. In like Flynn!
  31. Darn it!!

I am new to Sirius and sat radio in general. I just ordered my radio and have it on its way. I haven't even activated my subscription yet and I can't wait to partake in Walk The Dog. What a great idea.

In the meantime, i will be reading to find out what people are thinking of the channels...
  32. I'm gonna let them stream in my office for awhile each day.

Don't forget to take a plastic bag with you on your walk:

  33. If it's possible, could we set up a poll for each channel, so everyone could give a rating from 1 to 10 for that channel? At the end, you could calculate the average rating. Then after we Walk the Dog with all channels, we'd have a ranking of all channels according to SBS. I wish I suggested this before we opened the initial threads, but I think it would be a good way to quantify how much the group likes each channel.

there actually is a feature set up to rate each thread. Its at the top of each thread right above where you can select a page within the thread. its based on a rating of 1-5 and it automatically calculates the average score. I think for now this is adequate for rating each channel although if enough people show an interest in walk the dog and vote this way I'll definatly consider setting up an actual poll for future weeks.
  35. I like the thread rating system as a way to rate the channel
  36. Thanks for bringing this feature back to SBS! I think this gives listeners a chance to listen to channels that they would not normally listen to.

Personally, I have a wide range in my music tastes, but this may expand it more!
  37. I am happy to mention that I have added Left of Center to one of my presets. Its a really good station. I was subjected to New Country this past weekend, and I still stand firm...I can't stand country music!! Classical voices will be tried this week!

Good call on bringing back Walk the Dog!!!
  38. I think as long as Sirius keeps adding subscribers it makes sense to keep this feature around and keep cycling back.
  39. It's Thursday and still no new channels have been posted. What's going on here fellas? Is Walk the Dog dead already?
  40. Wow. I gotta say that I'm impressed with the amount of positive feedback and participation walk the dog has received so far. The week 2 channels will be posted sometime later today and stickied so they will remain on top with week one channels being open for anyone who wants to continue discussion about them.
  41. I enjoyed Week 1 of "Walk The Dog". New Country I am a big fan of, Left of Center I'm surprise I kinda like it, I could listen to it again. But Classical Voices not a fan of. Looking forward for Week 2!

  42. ok everyone. Walk the dog week 2 channels are posted. They are as follows:

    45. Shade 45

    30. The Coffee House

    93. Bande à part

Week 1 was definatly fun and it seems to have opened up alot of peoples musical listening habits. Lets all keep it going as we still have alot of channels to go.

    I re-suggest this.
  44. Actully, I'd told soxnationonline that having 5 sticky threads, without the ability to keep this one and the preset thread at the top, doesn't look right. Plus, people know we're in week 2 and week 1 is over. There isn't any point in locking the threads from week 1, so just look for the ones that say the newest week.

I'm searching for a way to make a sticky always remain above others.
  45. soxnation,
Man, you're doing a good job picking channels that I wouldn't normally touch with a ten-foot-pole. Hip-hop, classical voices, new country, Canadian French music. I can't wait to see what the next week brings.

Keep 'em coming. I'm up for your challenge.

thanx man. I already have the 66 (not doing kids stuff) music channels broken down into the popular, somewhat popular and not so popular catagories so there should always be a diverse mix of music and a high chance that everyone will have a new channel to discover each week.
  47. also everyone be sure to rate the week one channel threads. So far left of center has a huge lead with a 4.33 average. I'll declare an official winner of the week on fridays.
  48. I haven't listened to all of Week 2 channels, but is it ok we can rate Week 2 yet or save it for later?
  49. We now have the stickys ordered so this one and the presets thread will stay at the top and the channels we're walking will be shown last. The channels from previous weeks will be below those 5 threads.
  50. Quote:

cool. I knew you'd figure out a way to do it.
  51. ok everyone... the channels for week 3 are posted and are:

    11 BBC Radio 1
    20 Octane
    71 Jazz Cafe

Here's to another great week of listening and discovering new music on the sirius dial.
  52. Through the first two weeks, here are the standings, based on the thread ratings.

    Left of Center - 4.00
    New Country - 3.45
    Shade 45 - 3.10
    Classical Voices - 2.64
    Bande a part - 2.57
    Coffee House - 2.33

If you haven't voted yet, go to the top of any page in the thread and click on "Rate Thread". At the end, we'll have a ranking of all the music channels, as voted by us in Walk the Dog.

The list as it stands now is pretty much the order I'd personally rank the six channels, although I may actually put Bande a part last.
  53. With all the recent changes at the Beat 36, this should really be picked as one of the next stations for WTD. Let's see if the mass appeal programming concept Sirius just adopted is working. Plus, it was never picked back during the first life of WTD.
  54. week 4 channels are up and wow what a coincidence, the beat was randomly selected by the walk the dog supercomputer.

    05 - Sirius gold
    24 - Sirius Disorder
    36 - The Beat
  55. Thanks Bubba, you are doing a GREAT job with this.

  56. Good job, soxnationonline. Good to see this feature back up and running.
  57. The first person to post their favorite channel that hasn't been chosen yet for walk the dog will have it featured in week 5. *

*sorry mods. You're excluded from this one.
  58. The Big 80's

    Do I win the prize!?!

  60. Week six channels are up everyone.

    01 - Hits one
    17 - Jam on
    68 - Praise
  61. Hey sox's what are the Week 7 channels?
  62. Where y'at, sox?
  63. hey everyone.

I just wanted to check in and let you know that I haven't forgotten about WTD. I've recently started a new job that unfortunately (not financially wise) is working in the evening shift so I don't get home till around midnite. I was going to work on week 7 and have it posted tonight but one of my friends who suffers from seizures had to be taken to the hospital so I never got a chance to do it. I am going to try my best to get week 7 posted sometime monday but I can't promise what time.

    SNO.
  64. I hope your friend get better, and good luck on your new late shift job!
  65. Week 7 channels are up.

    14 - Classic Vinyl
    43 - Backspin
    75 - Standard Time
  66. Wow, Jam_On was rated the lowest so far, even lower than Bandeapart. Maybe some of us were right and there's not really that wide an interest in jam bands.

'Course that assumes us WTDers are a representative sample....
  67. Here's the standings through the first six weeks:

    1. Big '80s - 4.64
    2. Sirius Gold - 4.12
    3. Bluegrass - 4.00
    ... Octane - 4.00
    5. Left of Center - 3.77
    6. Reggae Rhythms - 3.64
    7. Sirius Disorder - 3.60
    8. The Beat - 3.40
    9. BBC Radio - 3.36
    10. New Country - 3.29
    11. Jazz Cafe - 3.00
    12. Praise - 2.88
    13. Coffee House - 2.77
    ... Classic Voices - 2.77
    15. Shade 45 - 2.62
    16. Hits One - 2.50
    17. Bande a part - 2.45
    18. Jam On - 2.00

The surprises so far include by how far in front the Big '80s is in first place, and how high Bluegrass ranks. I happen to agree with both of those. I would put Reggae Rhythms much further down the list.
  68. Hah I started Walk the dog over two years ago, good to see that it has come back.

I'll announce the listening schedule in the next day or two so stay tuned.
  73. I just wanted to thank everyone that stopped by the chatroom last night and joined in on walk the dog live. We had fun listening to some good and some godawful music.

I support that idea! I have never listened to Roadhouse before.

I'm using this week to give a second listen to Left of Center & The Coffee House.

WTD is just the music channels. If we did the talk channels as well WTD would have taken too long to finish and we also felt it was best to leave them out so we wouldnt have to be moving a bunch of threads to the political asylum.

  85. Which path will you choose!

All right, not a ban. How about a recommendation? "Not my style" is really unproductive.
  91. Let's cover the Bridge before the change to the Who channel.
  92. No Walk The Dog for Week 17?
  93. walk the dog is on vacation.

    will resume next week.
  94. Sounds like a good week for a "catch up" week. I'm also using the time to try out some of the talk/entertainment channels I don't listen to. I know we're only doing music channels during WTD, but I'm finding a lot of good stuff I didn't know about on some of the talk/entertainment stations as well.
  95. Agreed. I didn't get a Sirius sub until Week 6 of Walk The Dog. I need to catch up on the first couple of weeks.
  96. I'm going to use this week to give Sirius Hits 1 another listen. I'll also give Alt Nation a second week. (I'm trying to introduce myself to more current music than I normally listen to.)
  97. As of now, there are 17 channels remaining (if we're including the Who and Rolling Stones channels). If we're adding the Met Opera Channel (since it's now different than Classical Voices), that brings us to 18. That's six more weeks of WTD.

Pop: Star Lite, '60s Vibrations, Super Shuffle
Rock: Who Channel, Spectrum, Buzzsaw, Underground Garage, Rolling Stones
    Dance: Strobe
    R&B: Heart & Soul
    Country: Roadhouse
    Christian: Spirit
    Jazz: Planet Jazz, Pure Jazz
Classical: Symphony Hall (plus Met Opera?)
    International: Universo Latino, Iceberg Radio

Keep up the good work, Sox!
  98. glad that some people got to use the week off to revisit some channels and for other to get a chance to play catch up.

I really can't believe we're up to week 17 already. Its still seems like only yesterday that WTD started.

much thanx needs to go out to 7Aaron as well. I've seen the posts you've made on other threads guiding people over here and have put up WTD sigs when they were made.

Thanx to everyone who has supported walk the dog up to this point.
  99. wow. I really can't believe we're down to our last week of walk the dog. I was going to post the channels last night but hesitated because once I did I knew it would be over.

I just wanted to thank the mods for helping this get off the ground again many many weeks ago and I especially want to thank everyone who participated in and supported walk the dog.
  100. Thanks soxnationonline for suggesting the idea of bringing back WTD and keeping it going this whole time. You did a fine job selecting the channels for us.

I also can't believe it is about to end.
  101. soxnationonline for TopDog!!!
  102. Thanks, sox, for organizing this. Great job mixing up the channels so there was good variety each week.

When the Bridge comes back, maybe we could have a special one time only WTD for that channel? And maybe the same for any other new music channels (give it a month or so after it debuts just to let it get started first).

    Thanks again.

  104. Hey Sox...thanks for the hard work on WTD!
  105. I just wanted to take the time to thank Sox for a great job on Walk The Dog. This has been done so much better this time then in the past and perhaps down the road he can do this again. GREAT Job Bubba!!!

I have really enjoyed reading all the feedback and thoughts of others each week.

    awwwww. thanx dab.

thanx to everyone else for the positive posts. I had a fun time doing this and look forward to doing some sort of revisiting walk the dog in the future. If anyone has any sort of suggestions please post them here.

    thanx again everyone.

  108. Wow - is it really over? That is sad. We have gone through all of the stations already? Yikes. Granted, I only jumped in at Week 7 (when I bought my Sirius sub).

However, I will take this time to go back and listen to the WTD weeks that I missed (the first 6 weeks or so) and add my 2 cents to the forum.

    sox -

    what's with this cryptic message?

    rumors of new channels?

    I can't stand the suspense...
  112. I'm hoping 1-8-07 is when the next round of WTD kicks off?

Walk the Dog means that we focused on three different channels each week and posted our comments.
Read the opening post in this thread. It explains it better than I can.

    no. no new channels.

that's all the walk the dog master computer will allow me to say right now.

    stay tuned.

  118. Ok everyone, the walk the dog master computer has processed and computed and come out with 3 completely random WTD channels. This is a time for first time backstagers to get a taste of WTD (refer to the 1st page of this thread for what WTD is) and explore the sirius music dial as well as a chance for us backstagers long in the tooth a chance to revisit the channels.

I also am considering doing talk and entertainment channels so everyone be sure to leave some feedback if you think this would be a good idea or not.
  119. sounds great. Remember that we still need to add The Bridge, since we never got around to it the last time through.
  120. sox,
    Thanks for keeping WTD alive.
I agree it might be a good idea to feature talk & entertainment channels, especially those that are not duplicated on TV. NFL Radio, Howard, Kids Stuff, Lime, the comedy channels.

Also, maybe I'm overlooking it, but I don't remember ever walking the dog over to Iceberg Radio.
  121. I agree that Walk The Dog may be useful for some Talk and Entertainment channels, such as Discovery, Trucking Channel, and Playboy Radio. There seems to be a lot going on, on a lot of these channels, but I would guess that many people never check it out.
  122. I think including a few talk channels would be good. Other than NFL and Traffic/Weather, I tend to stay with the music channels. It'll be a nice change.
  123. Make it entertainment channels as opposed to the political/talk channels. Thats a topic that'll make heated debates and anger some people. People not interested in sports wont listen to Sports channels either. 102 to 119 are probably the best bets.
  124. Should the newer channels be added to WTD? Channel 24? Even the "new" 75, Siriusly Sinatra? What do you think? Or is WTD officially over?
  125. Did the "new" randomized version of WTD start yet? I'd love to participate this go-round. I've only had Sirius a few weeks and would love to go through the WTD experience.
  126. give the new channels a couple weeks to settle in before getting the WTD treatment. especially if they will eventually add DJs.

However, give the Bridge a week on WTD - we missed it the first time 'round because of the Who.

Excellent point. I totally forgot about The Bridge!
  128. just wanted to give everyone notice that I re-stickied three new wtd channels.

Im going to try to be more consistent with updating the stickies every week or two. Also if anyone has suggestions on how we can expand walk the dog please let me know.

Perhaps we could advertise walk the dog (the current week's channels) on the front page of the forum, near the announcements like Today's Birthday's and Upcoming Events.

Also, a week featuring Lithium & The Bridge would be great!
  130. Not sure I follow...

Are we going back and listening to the channels again?
  131. Christmas is coming in just over a week. I might be a good idea to start pushing Walk the Dog again for all the new subscribers due to gifts and such...

    Just an Idea...
  132. I think that the walk the dog concept is great; and should be continued!

Keep up all of the great work on the site!

As a newb to the forum and to Sirius -I would agree!
  134. I would be in if Walk the Dog was reopened. I love the concept and think its a great idea.

I brought the point up back in December for all the new subscribers that we get around Christmas, but I guess nobody wanted to do it.

Summertime would be a great chance to start it again. Five channels a week would make the summer fly by...
  136. Yes they would. I keep an open mind music wise and enjoy exploring new genres.
  137. I'm certainly up for it.
  138. We need to do The Bridge. When last we did WTD, The Bridge was The Who Channel...

Can someone Please create a The Bridge Thread?...

    Thank you...

Edit: I musta jacked things up. I can't get The Who Channel Thread to open...
