SIRIUS to Expand Constellation, Build New Super Satellite

Thursday, June 8th, 2006

SIRIUS Satellite Radio announced that it has entered into an agreement with Space Systems/Loral, a subsidiary of Loral Space & Communications, for the design and construction of a new satellite that will be one of the most advanced and powerful communications satellites ever built.

Construction of the satellite is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2008. SIRIUS plans to launch the satellite on a Proton rocket under a contract previously announced between SIRIUS and International Launch Services (ILS). The satellite will be launched into a geostationary orbit to complement SIRIUS’ existing three satellites, which were also manufactured by Space Systems/Loral and operate in a highly elliptical geosynchronous orbit. This unique hybrid constellation will provide unparalleled redundancy, enhanced coverage and exceptional performance.

“This investment in next generation space technology will improve SIRIUS’ already exceptional service experience,” said Mel Karmazin, CEO of SIRIUS. “Not only will this satellite support our other three satellites currently in orbit, but it will also improve reception for all SIRIUS subscribers whether they are in their car, office, home or jogging in the park.”

Sirius for Dads and Grads, from $30

Wednesday, June 7th, 2006

With Father’s Day and high school graduation coming up this month, we have a couple ideas on what to get them from Sirius. All prices are before rebates; if there is a rebate available, the final price after rebates is displayed in parentheses. If you click on the model name, it will take you to a review by a resident expert of Sirius.

-For those on a budget, your best bet is the Sirius One(model number SV-1), which is available at CircuitCity for $29.99 this week. A basic radio, but it has a display with title/artist, easily lets you scroll through the channels, and will get the job done for a first timer to Sirius.

-If you want a great radio without a steep price tag, we recommend the Starmate Replay at $84.99($64.99) from TSS-Radio, available in both silver and black. This small radio comes jam-packed with features including a clock with alarm, song alerts that tell you when your favorite song is on, full 5-line display, and much more. For $169($129), you can get the Starmate Replay, car kit, and the Boomcube, for full functionality.

-Want to get a radio for the car and for a boombox for a cheap price? This JVC package at Crutchfield offers the plug and play radio with a car kit and a boombox for $149.99($99.99). While the radio does not offer direct entry, it still has the replay functions and a large red display. The boombox offers one of the loudest sounds for satellite radio, with 5.25″ speakers.

-For the high-end Sirius radio, the S50 comes with a color screen, allows you to save songs you like, record shows while you sleep, and upload MP3s so you can listen on-the-go. It does not get live satellite reception out of its car or home dock, but you can still listen to programs that were recorded. Available for $249.99($149.99) at TSS-Radio.com. For $419.99($299.99), you can get the S50 with the Executive Docking Station, which is a beautiful stereo to listen to the S50 on.

For an extra $50 on any of these, you can get a prepaid card that comes with activation and 3 months of service. This will let them try out the service without having to spend their own money. We hope this helps you choose the best radio for a gift.

Xact Visor featured as Today’s Special Value on QVC Wednesday

Wednesday, June 7th, 2006

A thread started in our forum just after 1am EDT talking about the Xact Visor being featured as Today’s Special Value. Thank you to DaveyD for pointing this out and to WolfViper for posting this image. According to SISO, it seems that QVC is broadcasting some of their show from SIRIUS’s offices today. He said, “They’re at the Sirius studios next to the “fishbowl”".

Special Values end at 12am EDT, so if you want to get this radio for the advertised price, act quickly. QVC customers that purchase this radio today must call SIRIUS by June 30, 2006 to activate and SIRIUS will pay your activation fee. Three (3) months activation, SID/ESN number from the radio, and a major credit card required.

Sirius Gets Exclusive Interview With Satan

Tuesday, June 6th, 2006

Satan DogIn honor of 6-6-6 Sirius comedy grabbed an EXCLUSIVE interview with none other but Satan himself!
SIRIUS Comedy: Welcome, Satan.

Satan: “Welcome” my [pointy tail]*! The boss said if I don’t do this stupid [darn] interview, he’d dock my pay!

SIRIUS Comedy: How is it you came to work here at SIRIUS? Do you enjoy being the voice of Raw Dog?

Satan: Look…let’s get this straight: I “enjoy” torturing human souls for all eternity! I “enjoy” playing craps with Saddam’s boys! For Hades’ sake, I don’t “enjoy” working for idiots who tell me to “reset the topic” every five minutes!

Problem is: with fuel costs what they are these days, keeping hell hot costs a [whole heck of a lot] of money… a demon needs to do what a demon needs to do… so… one day, me and Sam and his youthful ward, Sal, are watching Gilmore Girls and…

SIRIUS Comedy: Satan watches Gilmore Girls?

Satan: What? C’mon, Gilmore Girls is an excellent show! Tell me you wouldn’t want a mom like Lorelai!?!?…ugh! Anyhoo…this “Sal” mentions that his bosses over at Raw Dog are looking for an announcer for the channel, and that it pays pretty well. So I went to the audition, eviscerated everyone in the room, and started showing up for work!! AHHHHA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA…

It’s a great arrangement: they don’t [mess] with me, and I let them keep their mortal souls. AHHHH HA HA HA HA HA HA… for now.

SIRIUS Comedy: So, Satan, are you excited about June 6th, 2006, when the date will be 6/6/06. Is this like a big day in hell, like a birthday for you?

Satan: Hades help me! That whole “666″ thing is a pile of crap! Sort of like Cinco de Mayo in Mexico, or St. Patrick’s day in Ireland!

Here’s the deal: it wound up in the Bible, then Iron Maiden put it in that [flipping] song… and once you put something in a song…well, just call the poor sonovabitch who has 867-5309 as his phone number…he’ll tell ya. But personally I’m thinking I just might call in sick that day and smite the entire lot of you!

Ugh!…there goes my ulcer. I really wish I didn’t need this gig.

Enough about that! Next question!

SIRIUS COMEDY: An ulcer? Forgive me for saying this, Satan, but that doesn’t seem very Satanic…

Satan: Not satanic? Call me on October 6th, 2014…let me know how “not Satanic” it feels. MUUUAHHAHAHAHA…

Free Sirius for Playing Poker - Ripoff or Bargain?

Monday, June 5th, 2006

There is a new site out there, http://www.siriusforpoker.com/, that allows you to get a free Sirius by signing up to play poker online. The question becomes, is it worth it? The site works as most poker affiliate sites do, where you have to play ‘raked hands’, or hands of poker where the poker site takes a percentage(about 3-5%, depending on the site) of the pot. This one requires you to play in at least 1250-1500 raked hands with a $1/2 minimum bet for most radios except the S50, which is a minimum of 4500-5000 raked hands. Oh, and you only have 90 days(120 for the S50) to complete that number of hands. At the end of the day, it would be a very expensive way to try and get a free Sirius radio. But, if you are a good poker player and have been playing online for a while, it cannot hurt. Otherwise, I would advise against it. You will spend a lot less money(and time!) just buying the radio instead of trying to play for it. If you lose your initial ‘investment’, generally a minimum of $500, you could have bought yourself a new Starmate Replay along with lifetime service for $100 more.
