SIRIUS Internet Radio: Imagine the Possibilties
We recently learned that SIRIUS has registered the trademark “SIR” for the SIRIUS Internet Radio service.
While SIRIUS has yet to announce their plans for the service (if it’s even a new service), here’s are a few cool features I’d like to see:
- Stream new channels not available on the satellite service (and maybe bring back some popular deleted formats)
- Enable open access so you can play (and control) SIRIUS on multiple devices such as Sonos ZonePlayer, the Roku Soundbridge or Slim Devices Squeezebox
- Provide reception options for people who find it difficult to get a satellite signal in the home or office (Stiletto and the upcoming Zing player appear to be the first devices to do so)
- WiFi powered signal-repeater to solve in-home reception problems
- Internet-only subscription for people who don’t want to buy a radio, or for people living outside the USA
None of these ideas are rocket science or costly to implement. I guess we’ll have to wait and see if SIRIUS does something revolutionary…or just plays it safe.
