’90s Alternative named “Lithium 24″

I tuned in to channel 24 today. The channel’s name across the top of the PNP display says ’90s Alternative, but a bumper I heard caught my attention.

Update 9:15am : Sirius has put up a channel page: http://www.sirius.com/90salternative

Comments:

1. yep, lithium 24 (great name imo).

The best Grunge and '90s Alternative Rock.

We play Pearl Jam, Green Day, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Foo Fighters, Radiohead, Alice In Chains, The Offspring, Stone Temple Pilots, Weezer, Nirvana and many more.

love the channel. but they did play house of pain - jump around at like 8:45 then again at 9:05, hopefully its something in their playlist that they will catch.

- Jon
2. yea its great to see working, I'm using the widget it calls it 90s alt but im sure they will change it. Also anyone notice on widget it shows current song then flashes back last song real fast time to time? It seems to have stoped for now also anyone know when the punk channel will come out?
3. I really like this channel. Good job Sirius!
4. I'm loving this new channel!
5. I been listening to Lithium 24 for over an hour now and I really enjoy it. I all ready made it a preset over my old Revolution channel. But Lithium 24 is a better name than Frequency 24.
6. great list but i'll be sick of it in a week if they don't start adding some b-sides, live tracks and deeper album cuts. this station is what terrestrial radio is already doing and has been doing for the last 15 years. spice it the hell up. if i wanted to hear every early to mid 90s A side, i'd put it on octane.

octane = 50% 90s alt rock A sides, 40% emo junk, 10% hard attack's mainstream songs.
7. I am really enjoying Lithium 24 as well. I am surprised as I thought the station would just be playing all the top 10 rock hits of the 90's but it is nice they are going deeper. Also, we are getting all non-edited versions!

Sounds like harder alternative, which is cool but what about artists like Juliana Hatfield and the Breeders? I dug their music in the ninties, too.
9. If they played Belly, and Toad the Wet Sprocket, (which they have) they surely can play the Breeders.

Now how about some Social Distortion?
10. well i am just an old metalhead. i dont like it. and i dont understand why its getting so much bandwith. it sounds better than every channel except sirius 1. its playing some slow song right now.zzzzzzzzzzzz

(this is just my opinion i know you guys love it so you aint gotta slam me )
11. Other than Mazzy Star, this station has been the balls so far this last hour. Old Green Day, old Chili Peppers, Faith No More, Smashing PUmpkins, and nine inch nails. Sweet.
12. Great channel. Been waiting for Sirius to add a channel like this, thought it was lacking.
13. Lithium pleases me--more so than the scrapped Frequency name. In the short time I've been listening I can honestly say that I've been enjoying this channel. Haven't heard any DJs yet and I'm really hoping it stays that way because this is one channel that wouldn't benefit from them, IMHO.

Although, one annoyance I've noticed already is a couple of annoying bumpers that are very similar to Alt Nation...could do without that. Of course the repetition factor will be the big test and only time will determine how that plays out. So far, so good though.
14. This channel really hits the sweet spot for alternative music. It takes what I like from Octane and from Alt Nation, and combines it into one. And the sound quality was great as I listened driving to work.

In some ways, the channel seems a little thrown together with not enough planning. The last minute name change (did they have to negotiate naming rights with Courtney Love?), the fact that there are no DJs, and that playing "Jump Around" twice within 20 minutes. I think this channel has great potential though - add some DJs soon!

My "Nirvana" Artist Alert will go going off a lot more, now.

Hell no! Please don't! We already have two alt rock channels that are polar opposites in terms of DJ speak--one with excellent DJs (LOC) that really know their stuff and truly add to the whole music experience. Then there's the other (Mainstream Nation) with DJs that make you want to pull the trigger at any given moment and splatter brain matter all over your receiver. I say let's keep the third out of the equation and just enjoy it for what it is...good music. Besides, this new channel is essentially just a '90s version of Alt Nation, and if DJs were added it would probably be ones taken from that channel. Do you honestly want someone like A.D. or Madison coming in and taking charge like a freight train by constantly hitting the bumper and talking and singing over everything in site? Let's not fuck-up a possible good thing here!
16. On new channel lineups no mention about channel 186, but still shows Channel 186 Hard Core Sports on the radio. What is going on?.

It is rare for a new music channel to have DJs the first day unless it is close to an old channel that was axed - Classic Vinyl, for example, had DJs when it started because it was a split from The Rock; Classic Rewind did not for about six months.

I think they do have a couple glitches to work out though - Jump Around twice, Pearl Jam twice in an hour(different songs though), but it is the first day or so. I'm sure by next week all those little glitches will be worked out.

I am really happy to hear a lot of songs that I don't think have been played before, at least on The Pulse and Alt Nation(don't really listen to Octane). Just remember that if you think the direction of the channel should be changed, give them a call. The first several days are when they listen at all, I mean listen the most.

No, but I would always take more Demos. He always has a lot of informative stuff to say. One of the best DJs Sirius has, IMO.

I'm really enjoying this station so far, but I haven't heard anything yet that I would consider "deep". (and I would love to, trust me!)
20. The Who channel say PUNK across the top, i just wish it was.
21. Update: Lot's of new songs for Sirius on here - playlist from the last 45 minutes paired up with Backstage's Song Seek:

-Candlebox//Cover Me(once on Octane in June)
-The Offspring//She's Got Issues(once on Faction December 2005)
-Alice In Chains//Them Bones(Lots of plays)
-The Toadies//I Come From the Water(only played this past weekend on Octane's 90s Weekend)
-Marcy Playground//Sex and Candy(lots of spins)
-Soundgarden//Pretty Noose(a dozen times in the last six months)
-Green Day//Long View(lots)
-Blur//Girls & Boys(twice on Alt's 90s Weekend, twice on Radio 1)
-Pearl Jam//Black(lots of spins)
-311//Beautiful Disaster(3-4 times per week)
-Oasis//Champagne Supernova(lots of spins)
-Smashing Pumpkins//Rocket(rarely played)

So it looks to be about half of the songs are in regular rotation on other channels, but half of them are rarely played. Not bad.

Yes, some deep tracks would be nice. This station is hands down one of my new favorites now. I also like what they are going to do to Standard time, now if we had a punk and a funk station Sirius would be perfect.
23. When they start playing some Flaming Lips and Violent Femmes then I'll be impressed. So far though, I've enjoyed it, but it hasn't truly been impressive yet. Still hoping that they do indeed go deep into the era and pull out some of these other bands.
24. I've listened for around an hour total today and I'm really enjoying it, good good music!

The name is good as well!

They have played those artists? Great! I've only put it on a few times and it's basically been all male and harder edge rock acts. I like a different kind of mix with some lighter artists. Put some Crannberries in there, and I'm sold! I love the idea of a this station, though. It's one of the things that looked very interesting about XM that they had a 90s alt rock station. I gave it a listen but it didn't do much for me. What is Channel 23...I don't understand why 1st Wave and Lithium aren't back to back!

I think it had to do with moving as few channels as possible for now. Every change they make requires a good deal of time and some money, as they have to change the channel page on sirius.com, every liner that references the channel number(and if they cannot get the VO guy to redo it they have to bring someone else in and do them all over again), more possibilities of a screwup when updating, more people who call in and email wanting to know where _____ went, etc. It's not one of those things that they can just do at the drop of a hat.

Oh, and I did hear The Cranberries earlier, and at least one other alt group with a female lead that I cannot remember(Garbage?)

I was about to reply praising Demos, but you beat me to it. AD/Madison are terrible, I only wish Demos's shift wasn't up against Howard in the morning.

I would hope not....Lithium is the name of a chemical element, I don't think she's have much say in who uses it. Granted, I'm sure the Nirvana song is the sole reason for the name, but since Lithium is such a common word, I doubt they had to give that worthless bitch a penny.

You're the expert and that does make a lot of sense. Thanks. Its cool to have someone here that really knows a lot about Sirius.

Thanks! I really got into the Crannberries last year (even though they've been broken up for years) and Garbage is great too. Alternative music is all about variety! And to bandwagon03...just saw Social Distortion on there! I'll definatley give this channel a chance on my ride home tonight (can't right now...catching up with Howard!).
30. This channel kicks ass...I only changed from it once today, which was a minute ago when the Beastie Boys (bleh) started playing on Lithium and shortly after Tool popped up on my artist seek. I'll take Tool over the Beasties any day, but once Sober is over, I'll be switching back.

Also looking forward to the punk channel...I just hope it's real punk, not crap like Green Day and Blink 182.

Yea, that was Garbage. Only a few misses for me so far that I can remember....anything by the Goo Goo Dolls and Bittersweet Symphony. I hate that overplayed song.
32. i checked it out today as well. Made it about half an hour until they played U2. I will never go back now.
33. This new channel is AWESOME! I have well over 8 hours stored on my SL100 already.

Sirius hit a home run with this channel.

Im looking fwd to the punk channel launch after the WHO channel is off air.

Thank you Sirius for another great channel!
34. I like the channel a lot so far but they sure do play a ton of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains (which is fine and I didn't really expect anything less but there are a ton of other awesome 90s alt bands out there that I haven't heard today).

Somebody here mentioned Flaming Lips and Violent Femmes (although most of the Femmes tunes were 80s songs, they bled into the 90s) and somebody else mentioned the Breeders and I definitely agree they need the Lithium love.

Not to mention (assuming I didn't miss them play these bands during the 9 hours I listened today):
Porno for Pyros, Melvins, Babes in Toyland, Sonic Youth, Blind Melon, Pavement, L7, Clutch, Mudhoney, The Jesus Lizard, PJ Harvey, Veruca Salt, Elastica, Butthole Surfers, Len, Fun Lovin' Criminals and a crapload more that aren't coming to me right now.

Keep up the variety and I'll never have to change the channel!
35. So far this has been a great station.

Amen. They're playing more U2 now. But at least it's old stuff, which is more bearable than anything recent, so I can take it.

Yeah, I pretty much have that same reaction when they play anything by Blink 182. It's a forgivable offense though.

So far I'm lovin' the hell out of it
38. I think the hardest part about this station is that 90s alt should be a narrow genre, but it isn't. There is so much to 90s rock from grunge(nirvana) to altpop(311), borderline alt/singer-songwriter(Ben Folds Five), rock(soundgarden), britpop(oasis), traditional 90s alternative(RHCP, PJ), more novelty acts(Cake), those with a punk edge(early Green Day), early 90s end of the new wave just before the second wave alt(U2, R.E.M.), and probably a couple that I forgot.

Anyways, I think Sirius has done a great job with the station, and managed all the sub-genres fairly well, although I'm waiting for a Sublime song to be played.
39. it took me 2 hrs to get home from work today. i was listening to lithium the entire way. going 30 mph on the northern state pkwy just didnt bother me today (i'm from long island, we had an ice storm).

i would say the channel makes sirius virtually perfect as far as content goes!!

41. forget my earlier post. this aint the same tired songs over and over again. although i dont like pearl jam or nirvana i do like this channel. i forgot (because of fm) there actually was some good music back then. especially smashing pumkins. i forgot they had some hard rock songs! oh and the sq is great now. my radio must have been screwed up this morning. after i shut it off and turned it back on buzzsaw was near cd quality again also.

Excaellent suggestions! I just thinking about Elastica today! I heard Janes Addiction on there so Porno For Pyros shouldn't be a strech. Great female driven groups you listed. I so would love to hear L7! Hopefully the channel is new and will continue to grow in their playlist. The fact that they have flagship artists is troubling for an alt rock station.

I just thought of a great name that really doesn't fit the other stations...Frank Black! Just play the entire "Teenager of the Year" record and I'd be in bliss! You can't hate on ninties music when you think of how great alternative rock was throughout the entire deacade....but especially 1994-1995!
43. i liked eves plumb. anyone ever heard of this band?
44. There ya go, they just played Cannonball.

rusty, I have to admit this is the first time I can remember ever agreeing with you.

And speaking of which, has anyone heard "A Small Victory" on any station yet? Song search isn't giving me any hits. I freaking love that one.
50. Anybody know what remix of Bad Touch is on right now? I've never heard this version.
51. Now they're playing Squirrel Nut Zippers. This station is hitting the sweet spot. New favorite, bar none.

And I missed it! It seems like anytime I tune it on (and yes, it's only been like a day and a half) they tend to play really hard bands. Heard Alice IN Chains on there twice....no problem with them. I really gotta give this channel like a chance for a full hour but I don't think it will happen this weekend with the big Howard music special!

They just played Hole "Voilet" (I remember being a 13 year old and requesting "Miss World" on 89X in Detroit...and they never did play despite saying my name on the radio and saying they would!). And now they are playing "Buddy Hole" by Weezer. Good mix but I noticed when looking at the song search that a lot of these songs also get play on Alt Nation...not a surprise but anytime I put Alt Nation they are playing modern stuff that does little for me so this is definately a better alternative. The music of my youth! Thank you, Sirius!
53. i checked it out today its a great channel i've been flipping back and fourth between alt nation and lithium and i'm thoroughly enjoying it..what's up with the new punk channel 29? it's playing the "who" channel on it
54. The Who Channel will be on until 3/31.
55. This station is the shiznit. I've been wanting a 90's rock/alt/grunge station forever, and I knew XM has one.....good job Sirius, I've barely changed it since they launched it. Now I can crank up Alice In Chains (the best band ever) all day long.
56. some female led bands like Curve and Garbage would make me listen to this station even more. Don't get me wrong, this is the one station that I've been BEGGING for, but there's a few artists that are getting a little too much rotation (*cough*Pumpkins*cough).

They've played Garbage a couple of times. The Breeders too.
58. THIS CHANNEL KICKS ASS

Reminds me of all those days passed out from drinking way too much in college. This music sets me right in!!!

STP on now play Big Empty.. KICK ASS.. Now to another cold beer opening up to all my college buddies from this erra..

I would like to see about 3 female DJ's who absolutely kick ass with their knowledge of 90's alternative music on this channel. A few who cant cant to 4 but damn, they look HOT and know their music shit... Also has a hot voice and sounds good on the Air.

Oh and one more thing.. The SQ sounds great.. Must be given some extra bandwidth or something.

Good job Sirius
59. ...it's a little dry and there's WAY too much concentration on about ten artists. The 90s were more than Nirvana, Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, STP and RATM. Though I did hear Econoline Crush and that's not exactly a household name band.

Would like to hear some specialty programming...trip-hop, industrial, brit-pop...like hourly features with perhaps some voice talent or not.
60. great idea. specials, concentrating on a certain genre, or even a band. this channel can only get better
