Discovery Channel Radio is no longer on Sirius

It was noted by John79605 that Discovery Channel Radio had been dropped. The channel has been replaced with a loop suggesting alternative locations of where to find some of the shows that were on this channel. The discovery.com page used to say, “SIRIUS brings you 110 channels of the best commercial-free music, sports, information and entertainment with digital quality sound coast-to-coast! Discovery Channel Radio is SIRIUS 119“. Now, neither the channel page on sirius.com nor the radio page on discovery.com reference each other any longer.

UPDATE: Feb 21, 2007, 11:00am ET - Both Sirius and the Discovery Channel were contacted for comment.  Neither company has responded.

  1. WoW! That was quick
  2. This was part of the lineup change on Feb. 14, which is pre-merger announcement. Don't go jumping to conclusions.

    No, I don't think so.

    1. They would have said it on their website.
    2. Someone would have noticed the next day.
  4. wow this kinda sucks. i like to listen to discovery when im going to sleep. i find it has some nice, informative programing that is cool to hear and good to fall asleep to. i will miss this channel. i remember someone had a thread a few weeks back wondering in anyone would care if the discovery channel was dropped. i pretty much said the same thing then. well what can ya do? it was by no means one of my most listened to channels but i will miss it when im going to bed.

Gosh I musta missed that memo....don't remember seeing that mentioned...oh well no bubbles no troubles...
  6. I will miss it as well. There really should be more communication between Sirius and its customers.

If this is true (and I have no way of knowing one way or the other) then it was a good call. If it takes a week for anyone to notice a channel is gone, then it is not too popular!
  8. Good, now they can bring back Revolution...BRING BACK REVOLUTION!

BananaMan, I don't really like to argue, but this wasn't part of the Feb 14 update.

  10. I noticed it was gone on the 15th, however rarely listened and apologize for not posting about this sooner.
  11. And I guess it took me a week to notice it was gone.
  12. If you look at your own link, the channels in the IF YOU LIKED... section shows all channels that were removed. So yes, I guess it took you a week to notice. Thank you.
  13. And today it is listed.
  14. What was on Sirius channel 140 before the update? It now just says "Sirius" on the banner. I see it is currently the "World Radio Network" but the banner on your Sirius Radio now says "Sirius" so is that possibly going away too?

It was World Radio Network. It still is, daytimes. It is now play-by-play nights and weekends, I think.

Google's cached page (from 2/17) did NOT include it. You're welcome.

    Fixed.

Well, I guess this partially explains why Kim Komando was so abruptly taken off the DCR lineup. Wonder what happens to Mo Rocca's show?

If I didn't have the option of watching the Discovery channel on television I might actually be upset. Personally, I'd like to see a tech channel take its place since we're lacking in that department.
  18. Actually, going through our Now Playing data, I can confirm that it was switched to a loop at 4AM EST today, Wed the 21st. So yes, it was removed today and the page was updated today to include Discovery. Care to revise the fact that it was noticed on the 15th?

  19. This thread is more entertaining than the channel ever was!
  20. This bites. I wonder how many other streams we will be losing on the 14th through historical revision.

Please don't drop WRN. All the channels I used to listen to are gone.

Actually, I am a little upset about this. Wouldn't E! have been the more logical choice between the two to remove instead? At least DCR had some intelligent programming that was comprised of all its sister channels (TLC, The Learning Channel, The Science Channel, Discover Health, The Military Channel, Animal Planet, Discover Times, Discovery Home, Discovery Kids, Discovery Wings) combined into the one channel. The E! channel is basically the "What did Paris Hilton Do Today?" channel and I've never heard anyone say anything remotely good about it. The dumbing down of SIRIUS continues.
  23. Again, this could have been DCR removing themselves over contract dispute rather than Sirius removing them. The shortsightedness of Chad continues.
  24. This would be a good spot for Leo Laporte "The Tech Guy". I used to watch him on techTV about 5 years ago. I now download 3 of his 12 podcasts weekly from KFI radio. Somewhere in California.

So many channels.....So little time. Damn Howard 100 & 101!!
  25. The dumbification of Sirius continues.
  26. The Discovery channel and the E! channel are the biggest waste of bandwidth in the history of Sat. Radio. I never listened to the Discovery Channel and certainly am not upset that it is gone. Now, its time to dispose of the E! channel.

Where's the Cosmo channel on your list?
  28. Absolutely unacceptable. There is a gay channel, a BBC channel, Latin channels, multiple sports channels all covering the same thing, the Cosmo channel (what in God's name is that?), and three religious channels but no room for the Discovery Channel.

What a freakin' joke. Nice job Sirius. Thank God for Howard, Breuer, and the NFL Network; at least there are a few islands of quality programming in the vapid sea of wasted bandwidth.

    I am throughly disgusted.
  29. Sirius had a Discovery Channel Radio? I never listened to that channel anyway, since Hardcore Radio Sports channel hasn't come off yet or probably won't? They probably decided to take off Discovery Channel Radio in it place?.
  30. Does XM have Discovery? Then perhaps we will get it! Maybe we will all see some triming like this of potentially duplicate channels.

Nope XM got rid of there Discovery Channel Radio sometime last year.
  32. I never listened to it...so I guess I won't miss it. Who knows...maybe there is some corporate posturing going on and it'll be back (remember Fox News).
  33. Grrrr! I'll miss the Kim Komando show and some of the military channel shows on DCR. Maybe Sirius can give us a tech talk channel, or at least some tech talk shows with Leo or somebody. Let's get radio version of the old Tech TV channel (before it went south).
  34. Funny thing, on Mike and Murray last Friday, I believe, Mo Rocca was on and they plugged his DCR show. Now, there's no DCR. Hmmmmm....
  35. I was kinda bummed out when I "discovered" that the Discovery Channel is gone. I'd listen to it from time to time and actually enjoyed some of the shows. I'd be interested in to knowing what happened...seems like it was unplanned on Sirius' part, some maybe DSC pulled the plug.
  36. Yeah, that sucks. I loved the Travel show they replayed every night at 11pm and used to record it on my Stiletto quite often. I hope that they consider moving that show to another channel and keeping it.

SIRIUS channel 140 was World Radio Network before the 2/14 update.

The Cosmo channel is the biggest waste of bandwidth ever. Any music they play is basically the same stuff you could hear on Hits 1 or The Pulse. I can't see it doing good in any ratings survey.
  39. I'll chime in as another subscriber who was rather ticked with Sirius pulling discovery. Consider this: Discovery and the "Old Time" Radio Show channels were about the only two that weren't primarily (1) music, (2) sports, or (3) "personality" driven shows (i.e., Howard, Martha, Derek & Romaine, Larry King, the other talk shows, much of what's on the news channels, etc.). Discovery was intelligent, pre-recorded, well-edited stories, and Sirius's suggestion that you can find ready replacements on the NPR stations is pretty weak, at best.

Perhaps E! was killed for similar reasons... the occasionally had those recorded biography shows, which were sometimes interesting.

This change -- after dropping PRI some months ago -- was enough to get me to closely examine XM's line-up and consider switching. Unfortunately their line-up is really no better these days, so I will be sticking with Sirius for the foreseeable future.

I agree with the guy who said dropping Discovery is equivalent to dumbing down the network; I'm sure the former C-Span listeners would agree.

Thanks Chad, BRING THEM BOTH BACK!
  41. Yes, well this is consistent (unfortunately) with Sirius' basic direction as per Mel the Genius. Intelligent programming not wanted. However, Howard X 2, E!, NASCAR (*listening* to cars go round and round...stunning concept), multiple right wing talk channels, the National Lacrosse League (no one understands it when they watch it so listening to it has to be a winning concept)... see where this is going?

Of course to make room for all this compelling content, PRI, WRN nights, C-SPAN and now Discovery Channel Radio have to go! That's all there is to it.
Mel was going to announce the Anna Nicole Smith channel, but she went ahead and died and will by default be on about a dozen Sirius channels almost continuously...

  42. You know, not everyone joined Sirius for the music. Some people enjoy listening to actual information

Back when I joined Sirius, they had the best talk, and news programs. Discovery one of the things. XM also had Discovery, but they seemed to play repeats a lot. So XM dropped the channel.

I don't know what's happening with Sirius lately. One day Sirius broadcasts Discovery to offer it all. The next they drop it.
  43. Count me in as another sorely disappointed customer. I enjoyed Discovery and, for that matter, A&E and OLN Radio, too, before they were removed from the stream list. "Dumbification" is right. In the last 6 months we've lost PRI, C-SPAN and Discovery. Let's see. One has to think when listening to BBC and WRN - I guess they'll be the next to get the axe.
  44. I am definitely bummed out about this. While I did not listen to the channel everyday, it was a nice change of pace from the Howard or NFL channels I usually listen to.

I agree that Sirius suggesting that there are suitable replacements in NPR, etc is a load of bull. I like NPR myself, but it is a different mindset. Discovery was nice for produced shows that were both informative and entertaining.

I'm a big talk radio fan, especially since Sirius still doesn't have a dedicated channel for the music I like. But they just keep getting rid of stuff. I miss PRI as well. E!, Cosmo, and Maxim are just wastes. I think even if you are really into the things they talk about on there you still would only be mildly interested with the actual content they provide.

Umm, I'm not sure what you're saying, because Hardcore has been gone in the US since Valentine's Day.
  46. After doing very little research on Discovery Radio....I think it is gone and it was Discovery that pulled out, not SIRIUS. Apparently Discovery Radio is doing podcasts of the TV show only.

I have to go wash the boat, someone with time check all this out at:

    http://www.discovery.com/radio/radio.html

I cannot get any Discovery Radio search links to work.

    Beat me to it.

Discovery has decided to get out of the radio business.

Sirius should still do a sci/tech talk channel.

Regardless of whether this was on Discovery's part or vice versa, it doesn't change the fact that we're losing good programming. And if it was can you really blame them after the way SIRIUS has interrupted programming for play-by-play sports coverage? I wouldn't be surprised to see *E!, RadioClassics and others to follow suit ...and justifiably so.

My reaction to the podshows are neutral.

    *Let's hope so!
  49. I see 119 on the channel lineup now says Sports Play-by-Play 4.

I thought that was the case too, but I swear I listened to Hardcore Sports this weekend on my Stiletto. Maybe I was just seeing things in the haze that was my weekend. I'll check when I get home today.
  51. Older receivers lost Hardcore Sports, newer receivers kept it. I still have it on SV-1 receivers.
  52. Air America 119!!!

But seriously, how long will it be until I have AAR back on the Sirius? With the new AAR owners, could it happen before the official merging?
  53. I actually listened to the discovery channel a lot. It helps with long drives to be able to listen to the shows. Cash Cab was always cool too. I feel i may not renew my subscription after it expires.

Well, I guess XM still has an exclusive contract with Air America, regardless. I wouldn't mind Sirius getting Air America back too. But, I must say, Air America was run by some of the dumbest individuals ever. You don't start an exclusive contract with one sat. radio company when you are still building an audience. And the timing was just brilliant. They left Sirius just before the vast majority of Stern fans (a demographic that likely is open to Air America programming) were coming on board.

Dumb, dumb people running that business.
  55. After lots of calls to both DSC and Sirius I found out from Sirius Management that DSC chose not to renew their contract..Not a good move as far as I'm concerned...DSC had the best educational programming on Sirius..Decision was made by Discovery Manager who's afraid to return phone messages left for him concerning this issue...Spineless DSC Management
