A SIRIUS Tidbit for May 29

A few more tidbits for the curious minded:

In the not too distant past, SIRIUS was known as Satellite CD Radio Inc.. They changed their name to SIRIUS Satellite Radio Inc. some time after paying $83 mil in an auction for the broadcast orbital frequency bands from the FCC in 1997.

They came up with the name from the star SIRIUS, sometimes referred to as the Dog Star, the brightest star in the night-time sky.

It’s been noted on various websites that the dog in their logo is unofficially named “Mongo”.

On February 19, 2007, SIRIUS announced a merger deal with XM Satellite Radio. Upon government approval, the merger would combine the two radio services and create a single Satellite Radio network in the United States.

A major focus for SIRIUS has been to execute exclusive deals with big-name personalities to create power house channels for the listeners.

SIRIUS has made deals with Martha Stewart, E Street Band member Steven Van Zandt, aka Little Steven, Jimmy Buffett, and Eminem, to produce entire channels on SIRIUS. Van Zandt created the Underground Garage dedicated to garage rock, and Outlaw Country - alternative country music. You should check them out if you haven’t already.

The biggest deal they’ve made was for for a five-year, $100 million per year agreement with Howard Stern. The Howard Stern Show started on January 9, 2006 on 2 full-time channels, (100 & 101) on SIRIUS, and there is the option for one more if Howard chooses to expand to such.

SIRIUS has a wide range of programming that covers a large variety of genres.

The major categories include: Music, News/Talk, Sports & Entertainment. Within each category are different channels that present a wide variety of sub-genres. For example, in the music category, there’s Rock, Pop, Country, Hip-Hop/R&B, Jazz/Blues. Each of those sub categories have various sub-sections.

Thanks for reading, and there’s more to follow later on in June.

Regards, Bruce

Mr. Excitement, Jimmy Spencer, was driving the Sirius sponsored Ultra Motorsports #7 at the time.
  5. Here's an interesting tidbit: Brusimm and Andrew both have the exact same number of posts.

I would assume that the most likely source for the name 'Mongo' was the movie Young Frankenstein (1974). The fact the logo mascot is named that, and exactly who may have named it, are both quite interesting, IMO.

    D'oh!

I stand corrected. (I HATE being wrong!)

    Thanks, linux.
