Bubba’s Renews Contract, Announces 2nd Show on FM

According to a media release this morning, Bubba the Love Sponge (r), the second most popular Sirius personality after Howard has had his contract renewed, albeit not known for how long. Bubba announced he was coming to Sirius in 2005, so if he had a two year contract previously, there is a good chance that his contract was renewed for another two years. Hear Bubba weekday afternoons on Howard101.

Tampabay.com is also reporting that he has inked a deal with terrestrial radio company Cox, to have a morning show in Jacksonville and Tampa(thanks BMF!). The two shows together are worth about $3 million to Bubba’s production company. This will be Bubba’s first time on the air on FM in 4 years. The show will air on a 10-second delay, and any pre-taped skits need to be approved by executives, as well as have the execs informed of any controversial bits ahead of time.

The question that arises is, can Bubba do 8 hours per day of talking and still be funny? Or will this be too much for him, and allow the show to implode? You’ll just have to tune in to find out.

Comments:

  1. He's also finalized a terrestrial deal:

  2. Got it. Thanks again!
  3. So much for Mel's 'Satellite Only' philosophy?
  4. I'm surprised and a little disappointed that he signed a deal on terrestrial radio.

I also wonder how the heck he could get even a quarter of his bits on the air with the secondary deal! At whatever rate, it's good to have him signed on with this renewed contract. I enjoy his show a lot. But for some reason (maybe it's just me) I feel like he should stick with one medium and hit terrestrial when his contract with Sirius expires.

If anyone can hear his shown in Florida and there is a way to hear it online I would love to hear his first show off Sirius!
  5. 102.5 The Bone has a Listen Live link. (looks like Bubba's buddy Cowhead works there):

    and also live online at:

Looks like I'm going to have to figure out an online recording mcgillicutty.

It may not be all bad having two shows. it could get him worked up for the Sirius show and he'll be chomping at the bit to let things get loose. I hope he was able to get more show control out of the deal. We need less overthinkers overthinking.
  6. I am just getting into Bubba. Hearing that he has a highly paying terrestrial deal is the real news here. No way will this not affect the quality of his satellite show. This was not brought up this morning. He will not make it on terrestrial, but he will deliver innocuous drivel.

have you listened to testical-less radio recently? Bubba's drivel will probably earn him a 12 share...
  8. Yeah but I dunno the fact everything has to be heard by executives first and everything might make it a little dry etc or stuff that we all would not thinks is bad they execs might because of shareholders.

I think the terrestrial deal will be over quick within a year if you ask me. Local FM station here had the same thing happened while some of the talk was good most of it was not. Now that they scrapped it for way dry talk and crappy programming I finally bit the bullet and got Sirius myself.
  9. I am also a little surprised by this. I mean - what does this prove? Here we were thinking that Sirius was holding back for other reasons - and for all we know this dual deal could have been a major factor in why Sirius would not make a deal.

I just think its a bit weird that he will be on the air for 13 hours a day too. When will they find time to prepare and make new material? Wont they get burned out?

To me it just seems...kinda shaddy. And for all we know - either company can fire him in the next year. If his show becomes boring and people stop following cause he gets burned out...then he will be off both airwaves. Albeit 3 million richer...
  10. Yesterday on the Stern show Howard said that if Bubba left he would probably drop Howard 101 because he would not be able to find an entertainer to fill Bubba's slot. Even if Bubba left I think having channel 101 is a great addition for those of us who miss the beginning of the HS show and want to hear the west coast feed.

I like Bubba's show. I just think he should stick with Sirius and I can't imagine what his terrestrial show is going to sound like. Thanks for the online links.... I can judge for myself!
  11. I'm not happy about this deal. It flies in the face of keeping everything exclusive for Sirius. In either case, I can see Bubba's terrestrial show becoming a tease for his Sirius show. "Sorry kids, that's all we can show you for now. But, check us out on Sirius later for the real deal."

Makes me wonder how long the Terrestrial Overlords will allow that to go on before complaining that he is just shilling for Sirius. As others have said, I don't see this lasting very long.

He does a safe enough show for radio for what ever that is worth and let's it fly on Sirius. This isn't national so what is the problem? All he needs to be concerned with is delivering ratings for a morning show on a couple local stations. Where is sharing content even present? There is no simulcast.
  13. Will he be able to mention eh-ah-eh without getting crap like Howard got at KROQ for the last year of his tenure?

Why does he have to? This is local radio. Those that know who he is already know he is on sat. All he has to do is a radio show and collect his money.
  15. I have the feeling he will eventually start "commercials" for his satellite program in the morning radio show. "Later today, we got this girl coming in . . . " "Later today, Spice is gonna electrocute his . . . " It's only natural. He'll be talking about himself and the satellite show is a part of that. When that happens, I think the local station is going to have a problem with it. It's just a prediction, but I think it's a reasonable one to make.
  16. If he gets good enough ratings for their stations, they may not care. I don't think the local markets are seriously impacted by satRad, not enough that their ad rates are suffering from it. Just look at the recent Arbitrons, SatRad is a blip on their radar. It was the big corps that were trying to maintain a national presence and really compete with SatRad, plus they were trying to stick it to Howard.

We don't even know all the details. Will it be a full talk show on FM or will he be spinning records too? I think Bubba knows he's got a lot on the line like he said, if he fails on testicle-less he'll have even less bargaining power with Sirius on his next contract.
  17. I know it's unfair to Bubba to even mention this, but anytime contract negotiations for radio personalities comes up, I hear Billy West doing Jackie in my head, laughing and asking for more money.
  18. Bubba's got to make a living wage. $ 3 Million total per year for 2 radio shows is not a lot when you consider he has to pay all his costs out of this including salaries. thats why his team is also touring doing stand-up on weekends and night times. After this year, these guys are going to be so burned out. If they were smart they would make two versions of bits - PG and R. Then just play them on both shows.
