Sirius Exceeds 8.3M Subscribers

NEW YORK, Jan 03, 2008 — SIRIUS Satellite Radio (Nasdaq: SIRI) today announced that it ended 2007 with 8,321,785 subscribers, up from the company’s 2006 ending subscriber base of 6,024,555. During 2007, SIRIUS added approximately 2.3 million net subscriber additions.

“SIRIUS’ subscriber base increased 38% in 2007, and our gross subscriber additions in 2007 were the highest in the history of satellite radio,” said Mel Karmazin, CEO for SIRIUS. “Our full year monthly subscriber self-pay churn rate was 1.6% and all-in churn was 2.2%, consistent with the low end of our guidance. Based upon preliminary financial data, we expect to report significantly greater positive free cash flow in the fourth quarter of 2007 than the company reported in the fourth quarter of 2006.

SIRIUS plans to release full year 2007 financial results and 2008 guidance in February 2008.

  1. Wow! 8.3 million. That's beautiful.

I think, when I first subscribed in '04 that I was part of the 1st million. I made it before that announcement anyway.
  2. I think I may have been part of the first million myself. Nice.
  3. I'm one of the new ones and one of the ones that joined in 2005, right before Stern came. So I'm two of the 8.3 million. It's so cool that the community is growing. Anyone know XM's numbers? They seem to be growing slower lately but they are probably still ahead.
  4. XM is probably clsoing in on 10k, right?
  5. XMFan is projecting them just over 9 million now. He was pretty close last quarter, but it's a projection, so take it for what it's worth...
  6. It been 3 days later and XM hasn't announced there subscribers numbers yet, so I have to say they probably didn't reach the 9 million mark for 2007?

    So far:
    XM - September 30, 2007 = 8,570,000
    Sirius - December 31, 2007 = 8,321,785

Here all of XM 4Q numbers:
    4Q - Dec 31, 02 = 145,446
    4Q - Dec 31, 03 = 430,580
    4Q - Dec 31, 04 = 713,101
    4Q - Dec 31, 05 = 898,315
    4Q - Dec 31, 06 = 444,000

    2007 Quarters numbers
    March 31 - 271,000
    June 30 - 350,000
    Sept 30 - 320,000

They need over 430,000 subscribers to get over 9 million.
  8. I was one of the first 500k that signed up for SIRIUS. These numbers look good. I agree with you guys I don't think XM made their 9 million mark. If that is true or not, WOW SIRIUS has really made huge strides in catching up and even if they don't merge, I foresee SIRIUS actually passing XM even with all their (XM's) great OEM deals. Amazing!

FM is and will be ahead for one and only one reason. It's free. Until I bought a radio and subscription for my parents, conversations about radio went like this.

Me: "I got satellite radio for my car"
Parents: "Why do you want to pay for something that's free?"
    Me: "It's uncensored."
    Parents: "FM is free."
    Me: "No commercials."
    Parents: "FM is free."
    Me: "Lot more variety."
    Parents: "FM is free."

Get my point? They would have never bought it on thier own cause FM was free. I am assuming a lot are like that. Even though FM sucks, it's free.
  11. I was in one of the markets that were launched first, Houston. I signed up in July 2002.
  12. I subscribed in Sept. of 05 so I think they were on 2 million then? 2 or 3, I'm not sure.

Now 8.3 million. That is HUGE. That also probably doesn't count a lot of peopel that waited to activate after Christmas.

If one was to consider that their time is worth money, then FM Radio is far from free due to the commercials.

You had to be one of the first 30,000 if you signed up the same time you did SBS. I was one of the first 60,000.
  15. Back of June '05, I joined Sirius when they had 1.8 Million subscribers. Still no XM numbers, there probably waiting to release there numbers when they finally reach 9 million?

I didn't really remember what the numbers were when I signed up, but I think you are right Rich. In fact I signed up like 3 or 4 months prior to registering on SBS, so it was probably even less subscribers than that. LOL

    We've come along way baby!

You know the weird thing Rich is that I love it as much today as I did when I first signed up for it. Just today I was listening to a couple of channels that I rarely listen too and I was like WOW, I haven't heard that in a long time. No way I could EVER settle for FM anymore.
  17. I think they had around 600k when I got Sirius. It seems like so long ago.

  18. Some of you guys really got SIRIUS early! I got in at around 2.5M and I felt like an early adopter, back when the Sportster Replay was about the most sophisticated radio out there.

Is it true you guys had to wear satellite dishes on your heads in the early days?

Nah that was just a rumor, but they had no portables and in fact no plug n play tuners, no boomboxes except the ones we made ourselves. I had an old Jensen SR tuner, one in my truck and one that I purchased to make a boombox.

Then later... Kenwood introduced the first PNP, called the H2A. We all thought we were in hog heaven. This thing was huge and you could fry eggs on it. But you could indeed dock it in the car, take it home or to the office and dock it. Still no boomboxes, but that would come in time, though they never made one for the H2A.

You guys don't know the good times you missed back then. I LOVED IT! You had to really want Sat Radio back then. Some of the light weights we get on the forum now days that complain about every little thing have no idea how terrible it was when these services first started. Granted, I perfer it as it is today, but for everything there is a beginning.

    I'm afraid of this "thing."

Nothing to be afraid of, that baby jammed. I used it for months, all it required was one of the 12volt battery backup batteries. IT would jam about 2 hours. Used it at the beach, bar-b-ques, camping. OH YEAH it was GREAT!

Could you pick that thing up or did you use a dolly to get it to the beach?

It really wasn't that bad, looked a lot worse than it really was. I still have that old boombox, but no sat tuner connected to it anymore. We have it out at the camp! We use it in the boat with an aux input.
  27. Damn man, when I first saw that pic, I thought it was a portable generator. lol Ah, the good old days.
  28. Damn,

That thing looks like it could cause a power outage as soon as you turned it on!! LOL.

I thought the old Audiovox PNP 1 & 2 were bad. I've used both and I must say the SL2 is a dream compared to the units in the beginning.
  29. DAB, that boombox is a straight up tank!! I loved that radio you had back then, the one with the wire connecting display piece to that big box! Wild. That Here to Anywhere is frickin huge in front of your dash too! It looks like something out of bygone era. What, a short 5 years ago????
