Harrisburg, PA subscribers being compensated for repeater outage?
Folks in the Harrisburg area should know that there are reports of subscribers getting partial refunds of their subscription fees, due to the shutdown of the local repeater. As you may recall, Sirius had to shutdown about 15 terrestrial repeaters for technical violations of their authority to operate them within certain parameters. Well according to this report, customer service is telling people in that area that they may be eligible for “compensation”
People affected by the Harrisburg outage, as well as the other locations affected by the shutdown, let us know how Sirius is taking care of you!

By the way, the service reps that I have dealt with have always been nice enough to assist me without any heartache on my end... by pawxman
In my case, reception was acceptable in my car/home prior to the shutdown. After the repeater shutdown, I could no longer get reliable service in my home. This forced me to spend a fair amount of money to continue to have the service:
- purchased an S100 so I could use WiFi when inside.
- had to upgrade my homw WiFi to one with stronger signal to get coverage where I wanted to use the S100
- I just recently purchased an antenna 50ft extension and an external antenna so that I could get higher quality reception without having to worry about WiFi interference that is becoming more prevalent with my neighbors.
So in the end, I've had to spend a few hundred bucks and many hours of my time to compensate for what 'just worked' when the antenna was placed anywhere near a window many months ago. by mskovrinskie
why couldn't you just buy the home dock for whatever radio you had? Just because you spent so much doesn't mean that you had to.
Many subscribers have no access to the repeaters... you had it better than most for a while, and now want to complain because you are like the rest of us now. I feal no pitty. by obk
Just kidding, but really, I think the mass of subscribers is probably car use, and that (for me at least) has gotten good reception everywhere. If you did want it and you lived in a place without repeaters, you can put an antenna in the window... incredibly, it has been done, and with success for many people.
The only thing repeater coverage has done for me was allow me to listen in the elevator at work.. I think I can live without that.
And if you have internet, people can always get "reception". by obk
is the inno and xm signal that much better in a city? by obk
And I don't really find the normal internet stream that bad.. by obk
It works well.
But, if you don't want to pony up the cash, you don't want to pony up the cash!
and if you want me to understand your scenario and issues, you need to explain it better, because I read what you wrote and it didn't change my view. by obk

This discount is Sirius's way of taking care of customers and not letting them hang out to dry. How would you like it if something happened to their satellites and you could only get their service for two hours a day? Would you still pay the same amount, listening for 2 hours verses 10? I know I sure as hell wouldn't and I'm sure most people wouldn't either.
I'm sorry if I am coming off pissed off but this is a very simple concept, they give discounts and make half of the money or they lose the customers and make zero money. If you are a stockholder you should be very glad that they are keeping the customers and maximizing their profits. by SatRadioFan

Now I know, from a business perspective, income is better than losing clients, but that was not even part of what I was saying... I was just saying that from a subcscibers point of view, you guys were back to the way the rest of us were, and now you are getting compensated for it.
So in closing, yes, would be mad if they took away the satalite feed that I knowingly paid for... I don't think I could be mad about losing the ground repeater (even though it does come in handy). by obk
Well that mentality works out great until you run into somebody who can't get satellite reception so they rely on the internet or repeaters. It isn't a hard concept. People purchased a product with the assumption that they would have these repeaters. The repeaters were taken away so Sirius is compensating said customers. It shouldn't bother anybody because it isn't hurting you, it isn't affecting you in any [negative] way and Sirius is only getting stronger by providing this "service".
It just boggles my mind that people are so self-centered. I haven't received the credit for a while (I no longer rely on the repeaters so I had them take the credit away) yet I am not upset that others are benefiting - go figure. by SatRadioFan

Although you may have known about the terrestrial repeaters when you subscribed, I think the majority of people did not.
And I am not upset that people are getting refunds, I just don't think people who have lost extra services should complain.
This is like paying comcast for internet, and then they start giving free wifi for a while, and then for some reason it goes away.. If that was to happen, should I complain that I can no longer get wifi? I don't think so. And if the service I pay for doesn't work, I ditch it or accept it for what it is. by obk
You may see the terrestrial repeaters as extra service but others certainly don't. I'd like to see what happens if the repeaters in NYC are shut down, or any major city for that matter. I'm sure, if you live in one of those cities, you would be bitching with the best of them. by SatRadioFan

If I was in NYC and they didn't have repeaters, I would probably use the wifi feed. I guess I didn't realize that H-burg was as big a city as NY
And yes, If they had terrestrial repeaters, they were getting better service than me.. now that their repeaters are off they can't listen as easily inside buildings.. I can never do that unless I run my antenna out the window (which I do) or use the internet feed. All I was saying was that they had it better than most people.
and I know this has gone on way too long. I understand his point.. it just seems he can't understand mine
I have said over and over that I understand your point.. I just don't totally agree. Sorry if your parents coddled you and didn't ever disagree.
Imagine you could not make or receive personal calls on your work phone but you were allowed to make some calls on your personal cell phone. If your cell provider suddenly stopped working at your work because your carrier removed a tower that you previously could get service on, you would be pretty miffed, right? by dauwit
I pay for cable and for a week or two they give me free HBO...
I get used to it and love all that great HBO stuff they gave me...
Now they take it away.. damn, now the bastards owe me
In the end, I understand what you guys are saying.. no need to really go on... I get it, you got something extra for free for a long time, now you get compensation for not getting it.. sure it is nice of sirius to give you guys a break on pricing for a while... again, all I was saying was that I don't necessarily think they owe anybody anything for taking away something that was not implicitly given to you...
I am pretty sure that I didn't know about repeaters when I bought satalite radio.. I just expected satalite coverage. by obk
