Bay Area DJ responds to merger annoncement

There has been lots of chatter all across the internets since Monday’s DoJ approval announcement.  One of the more interesting takes came from Bay Area DJ, “Big” Rick Stuart.  Mr. Stuart writes as a radio professional, a former employee of Mel’s at CBS Radio, and as a Sirius subscriber.  I thought his insights were interesting (as well as pretty much in line with mine).Big Rick Stuart

As he writes here,

1) big names stay and to listen to some of them you’ll pay more than “basic”
2) little weird stations might not stay or if they do will with staffing cuts
3) I don’t think there will be any programming duplication and Mel can be a loyal guy so if there is a choice XM staff gets cut
3) new hardware is coming soon, very very soon
4) the NAB will fight it all the way (and lose)
5) the very under the radar Sirius Backseat TV service will expand quickly

Now, I think he’s underplaying the pricing changes that will be favorable to many consumers, like the “Mostly Music” choice, but I encourage you to check out his post.

Comments:

  1. I think those are all very good points and most likely accurate (perhaps not the hardware prediction but everything else)

I have Backseat TV and it is quite good but only 3 channels. For $15/mo they are going to have to expand the lineup.
  2. You forgot to quote this part of his blog entry -

But you say "wow that will get expensive fast!" Yes it will. I am sure there will be just music packages w/o Stern or sports. For just music or news fees will be close to what you pay now. Maybe you get to pick 3 music stations and 3 news stations to add to the basic package for the basic fee.

My thoughts exactly - and another reason why this merger will screw all of us in one way or another, given enough time.
  3. the merger is bad, bad, bad. I hope and pray the FCC stops it. The last thing I want is Sirius music over XM. May as well listen to regular radio again.
  4. Here is another take on the merger -

  5. I think he is write, But I think those who are already with Sirius will have a choice to pay what they curently pay for the current lineup (or the equivilent if there is a better XM station that Mel wants to replace a Sirius station with)

I wouldn't think they would screw over existing subs but I guess I could be wrong.
  6. This is why I got out of radio...because I wanted to use my brain.

Any dork could write this crap and if you take it word for word...good luck.
  7. I'm not so sure about this theory that there is a lot of duplication between the two services. For example, Sirius and XM each have several indie/alternative rock channels, but it's pretty well known XM tends to go a little deeper relative to Sirius which takes a more mass appeal approach. The question is will these types of channels lean more mass appeal, or will they dig a little deeper? It's easy to write off this issue by claiming "there's a lot of duplication", but the challenge will be coming up with the right combination of the two approaches that will keep fans of both services happy.

What little I know about Mel from listening to Howard, he seem like a pretty pro-talent guy. This may be wishful thinking, but maybe there will be enough savings elsewhere that some of the programming guys from these similar channels can bring some of the best elements of both services into the new combined channels. I am encouraged by the fact that Mel will be running the show. The thing that impresses me is he is way pro advertising, but has held the line with commercials on music channels even when xm started selling ads. So far the guy hasn't led us wrong. I'm willing to give him a chance.

3 music stations....how depressing! Disgusting if true!
  10. We see Clear Channel going down the tubes because of mergers... Now I will soon get screwed if Satellite radio becomes the same. This sucks. Customers will always get screwed in the end with mergers.
  11. Makes me honestly wonder why Road Runner posted this and why we would even give credibility to this Clear Channel Kool Aid drinking fat ass.
  12. Bit of history to think about:

"The 22 million customers of AT&T Wireless were given a Hobson's choice in 2004 when the firm was acquired by Cingular, according to Public Justice. The advocacy group says consumers had three bad options after the merger:

Continue using their old phones and face a new $5 monthly fee and degraded service; switch to Cingular and pay an upgrade fee; or cancel their service and pay a $175 early-termination fee.

"There was no good option for these people," said Public Justice lawyer Leslie Bailey."

I'm obviously getting paid-off by Clear Channel and the NAB.

I just thought it was another perspective that I wasn't seeing reported on at every freakin' fan site. The guy says he's a Sirius sub (and I don't have any reason to doubt that), so it's not just someone parroting the party-line. I've even exchanged emails with Mr. Stuart, where he says that he's used Backstage as a source for radio reviews. ( I guess DAB is getting those huge NAB checks, too!!)

Disagree with any of his points if you'd like, you don't have to give him any credibility; it's just another opinion, like yours or mine.

Nah wasn't implying that about you at all...as a matter of fact I like it here. I just got a little annoyed at the article.

I know it's your job to put on as many informative things as possible so sorry if you took it as an attack against you.
