I just checked the website of Circuit City and they have the Delphi SkyFi at $130. Can anyone confirm the in store price is back to normal? They were offering a $30 discount to match the Kenwood prices, but if they are back to normal, then this gives Sirius a price advantage in the PNP hardware.
It ended with the rebate offer earlier this month. BB/CC just had an instant rebate, not a mail-in. The Delphi is currently $30 more than the Kenwood/Audiovox, although the car/home kits are the same price. If you want the Delphi/Audiovox form factor with FM mod/transmitter, you not only have a much easier install with the Audiovox(one that Joe Schmoe could likely do himself, instead of paying the store 50 bucks for install), you save $50 by buying the Audiovox over the Delphi, a potential savings of $100.
You make a good point that if you factor in installation costs, the AudioVox shuttle with FM tranmitter is the best PNP value. I suppose the cassette solution is competitive, but there's something about the simplicity of the transmitter that should have large appeal.
A large percentage of cars today are sold AM/FM/CD with no AUX. Now, you CAN avoid spending the 50 bucks for a Delphi FM mod by buying a Blitzsafe adapter for $70-$160.
And two more plusses for those convincing people to get the Sirius Audiovox:
-With the FM transmitter on the Audiovox, you can easily switch frequencies. Not so on the Delphi, where it is located on the FM mod itself.
-Buy an extra FM transmitter car kit with the $100 you save, and when you go on a journey in another person's car, stick the antenna through the window onto the roof, use the car's generic cig lighter, and turn it on, ready to work. Can easily put in/take out in less than a minute.
I just have the H2A. I would get the Audiovox, but the form factor isn't right for my car(The Delphi would be ick in it too.) I can stick the H2A into an old storage compartment with it just sticking out about a centimeter to pull it out.
Our Best Buy has the SkyFi for $129.99 again. I get them on employee discount for $99.67 after taxes I believe. A Boombox is $67 something. and car and home kits who cares who would want XM anyways.
Nothing about XM excites me anymore. I think whatever service hardware can get a Toslink or SPDIF will sell like hotcakes. And/or a Digital Recorder so they can play their favorite tracks over and over again will win. But that's more of an MP3 thing and I wouldn't want to spend the time setting up my SDARS to record copies of some song over and over again. Sounds pretty retarted to me.
But some stupid FCC or RIAA bullshit is preventing Digital connections when I can take any CD I own and RIP it to my compuer it better quality then if XM or Sirius were like that. Hmmm WTF is what I think.
