I remember reading once at some message board that WSM included the commercials with their broadcast. I think they should broadcast the station as heard over the air instead of those info they use when commercials are on.
Union issues. National ads produced with radio union employees cannot be rebroadcast over other outlets than agreed to. SIRIUS has no choice but to edit out these commercials. Unless you want to pay MORE money to hear ads!
I wouldn't want to pay more money but thought WSM would sound natural having the regular spots in the show. Too bad we couldn't hear the complete show...
Are you talking about ad spots on WSM that are filled in with Sirius ads? If so it's normal for these syndicated programs to have some spots that they let the rebroadcastor fill. That's how programs like Rush Limbaugh can have local ads even though it's broadcast nationally.
Nope....These are filled with PSA's. And it is a union issue. Stations that stream had the same issue.
So are you saying they can't fill those spots with revenue generating ads? They are stuck with PSA's only because of the union? I don't understand what the union has to do with it. Of course I've never listened to WSM so maybe that would help as a start
I am not sure on this point, but I do remember reading that if a commercial is streamed along with being broadcast, the "artists" in the commercial believe they should be paid more money for doing the commercial because they are reaching a wider range of listeners. If memory serves me, that is why a lot of internet stations stopped streaming or blocked out the commercials.
Your memory is absolutely correct, but it has more to do with union issues than copyright issues, and mostly affects national advertisements carried by local radio stations. The original contract included only those stations on the network, NOT internet streaming.
The performers thought they would get more pay by holding out for it. Instead, their commercials are being deleted, and the streamers are making more money by, in some cases, substituting other paid commercials!
It has to do with the FCC. If commercials are broadcast over a larger area than local, there is a hugh surcharge to the one sending the signal. WSM-am are all local commercials and it wouldn't be profitable to pay this surcharge. The local advertiser couldn't afford to pay this surcharge, they are small businesses. That's why streaming of many radio stations on the computer has disappeared. Who wants to hear to hear local advertising anyway. You can't frequent the establishment unless you want to travel hundreds or thousands of miles.
