CT/Southern MA Modern Rock Station Switched Formats
Radio 104 (http://www.radio104.com), one of the pioneers of the "grunge" movement seems to have changed formats to "Power 104.1" a rap station (http://www.power1041.com) after playing Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit at 4:49PM. This could be great for Sirius, because now there is only one "modern rock" station left (106.9 WCCC), and they are pretty heavy, almost more like hard attack, and their broadcast range is horrible, so I think Sirius and XM can cash in huge on the people of this region looking to hear the music they lost. Octane needs to come up huge now! Of course this could all be a publicity stunt, but I don't think they'd go through THIS much effort.
Call me stupid, but Western MA and central CT just do not seem to have the population to support an urban hip-hop station. I do not mean this in an offensive way, but Hartford and Springfield are just "too white." I am shocked that the KISS-FM station in Springfield is even on the air. Even Providence RI lacks a strong CHR station and it has a more urban element than this area. Go Figure.
I should have turned off the Sirius this past weekend and checked out the dial in New England. Strange things are happening all over the North East. Even WNEW 102.7 flipped again.
Believe or not, there's two now. In CT there are a LOT of white people, especially girls, who are into the hip-hop rap thing. I mean, hell look at the best selling albums from the past 3 years, they've almost always been rap cds. Hip-Hop has defintely crossed into being mainstream, a lot more so than I thought until recently (like 2 years ago I realized it.) Note: None of the posts so far are intended to be racist, don't read into them. (Granted, I think it's a shame when you need to qualify it with a statement like this.)
You people turn off Sirius whenever you feel like it and check out commercial FM. As for me, I couldn't care less what format who has. I have 60 commercial free music streams and 40 worldclass talk/entertainment streams.
The ONLY time my Sirius goes off at all is to hear ATC or ME on NPR. And rarely, very rarely, to hear local traffic and weather together on the 8's (when I am somewhere big enough to have local traffic!)

SAY THAT Brother... Yes Sir I agree. I'll be sticking exclusively to the
Sometimes you do not have Sirius with you when traveling by rental car.
Also, when traveling to a small town that still has a locally owned station, you can get a bit of the feel of the curture by listening to the locals. That can come in handy when you are from KY but working in NYC and have to make an unsolicited sales appearance in Brattleboro, VT. It is good to have an idea of the culture before you walk into the customers facility. In my case, it was a culture shock because before I left on the trip I was expecting the people to be like those around Providence, RI. Now I know that western New England and the area along I95 are very different culturally.
Not saying that I do not love Sirius, but I still like some of the commercial filled locals as well.
Being without SIRIUS? Nah..... LOL Actually I am kidding, but its true in my case. I take mine with me everywhere. I even have an extra FM Tranmitted Car Cradle Kit, so that if I go somewhere in a vehicle that doesn't have it. I can just whip my kit out, stick the antenna on the roof, tune into the channel and whamo, I got SIRIUS.
I agree that there are some cases where I guess FM would be handy, I just haven't figured out any of them yet. LOL
Well I mean, I pretty much listen to Sirius exclusively, but if I'm in a friend's car, there is no sat radio. The only reason I found out about it was cause I got 5000 IMs from people asking me if the change was real or not. Hopefully this will push most of my friends to get sat radio, but I think that they will used burnt cds instead... which I never really got, because you never get to hear new music that way.
Out of all my "close" friends, all of them have gotten SIRIUS and love it. However, I do have one hold out. He does exactly what you said. He snags the crappy MP3's off the internet and burns them to CD. That is what he listens too. He would argue with you that he listens to the latest of everything. He said, the day it comes out, he downloads it and he can hear it on CD. Anyway, I don't argue with him anymore, I just laugh as the dog is jamming. We road up to a football game this past weekend. I grabbed my portable kit and brought it with me. He said, what is that. I said, I bring the dog with me everywhere. Just turn you tuner on 88.5 and I'll do the rest. We jammed on my Audiovox SRS all the way there and back. He liked it, but you'd never get him to admit it. LOL
