I'm with you there. Zappa in particular suffers in that way. Since songs like
Illinois Enema Bandit (and the entire second side of
Absolutely Free!) never got airplay, it seems like they don't exist for the streams that the genre fits.
Two features of proto-FM that I'd like to see practiced are 1) the whole blessed album, and 2) the theme hour. In the latter the jock chooses a theme like 'hotels' or 'junkies' or 'young girls' and dredges out stuff that you probably wouldn't hear otherwise, but is quite interesting in terms of the theme.
The Theme Hour is tough to program. It's entirely possible that it vanished along with certain recreational drugs...
