Default No Tigers Baseball On the Radio?!

"There is no joy in Mudville over the fact that no local radio station will broadcast the Detroit Tigers games this year."

That's a quote from this morning's Lansing State Journal. I'm sure that a lot of the games will be on TV, but listening to baseball on the radio - no matter what team - is one of the great things about summer.

It's too bad Sirius doesn't have any MLB games...

Default Unbelievable

I find this hard to believe. If it is true, it is a total shame. Just like what has happened to a once proud franchise. Where would millions of Detroiters over the years have been without Ernie Harwell?

It apparently is true, although the article was from the Lansing paper. I did some further looking and found that Detroit stations will be airing the games, but you'd think Lansing - the capital city - would have at least one station picking up the games...

I had a similar problem with WWCN-AM here in Fort Myers and them not carrying the Marlins Radio Network. I beat on them until I got them to makeup with the flagship, WQAM, in Miami (both owned by Beasley Broadcasting) and they now air 120 games minimum, only preempted by local Everblades ECHL, Miracle (A-Twins), Firecats AF2, and FGCU Eagles broadcasts.

I would start an email campaign to WVFN, which is the one rumored to be closest to a deal with WXYT in Detroit.

We have the Tigers AA farm team here in Erie, Pa. There were complaints in our local media that the players leave here for Detroit and we never hear anymore about them.

This just gets me to thinking about the possibility of having major league baseball on satellite radio. Imagining being able to hear every baseball game in my car every night during the season is just mind boggling. Nothing against the NBA, NHL, or NFL, but at least on radio, baseball is the holy grail. Furthermore, I believe Sirius should treat it as such. The NFL is America's #1 sport right now by a mile, but it is basically only played once a week, at a time when most of football-loving America is at home on the couch in front of the tube. Baseball, on the other hand, is a day in, day out experience for those of us who love it. I'm not saying baseball is currently more popular than pro football in America, but it is the best radio sport, and I think Sirius would add an absolute ton of subscriptions if it got MLB.

Good luck on getting the Tigers back on the air in Lansing. Now that they've got their first halfway decent team in years too! Go figure.

Statomattic, I agree with you 100%. I am a mega-cubs fan and I live in Pennsylvania, so the only games I see are on WGN (when they carry them) when I am at home. This means I miss a lot of games. Having MLB on satellite radio would allow listeners a full option of games/teams. It would be great if Sirius could land MLB - but I have my doubts.

Or, put another way, the teams get to make money by controlling access in their markets. Which would be illegal were it not for baseball's antitrust exemption!

Yes but that goes both ways. If a team doesn't service a market, another team can battle for it and take it away.

See Atlanta Braves-Florida Marlins-Jacksonville fiasco.
