Default NFL info I heard on CNBC

The Sirius programming director was on and he said they were going to be carrying both announcers for games. This is GREAT NEWS

I am even more excited then I was before for the season now.

I know alot of people had questions about this so here is the answer.

If you are listening to Dallas vs Eagles for instance they will have one stream with the Dallas announcers and one with the Eagles.

P.S. IT was the Jay Clark Interview where Jay said it. Friday night.

BenDee had previously discovered this info in Sirius' last 10-K, and it was confirmed by SiriusRon. See this thread.

I think that it will be ok. Since it is split into the 1 and 4 games then the late games and Monday.

It will bve like 10 or 15 streams I assume. However, on the weekend alot of the talk stations get low traffic. I am betting they will take the 5 "Sirius" streams, left and right and the traffic and weather stations which get a lot less action on the weekends as well. The NFL being mainly on Sunday will make this alot easier I think.

That will be sweet to hear my Dolphins announcers while watching the game at home (using the magic of Tivo).

So lets see, they will need what....
32 teams total, 2 teams play Monday night, 2 teams play Sunday night.
On average there are 6-8 teams playing later (4pm kickoffs).

So that leaves 20-22 teams (10-11 games) that could be going on at the same time. Not counting Bye weeks, but either way that is alot of streams. So I guess we can expect alot of the talk streams being pre-empted this fall. Which is fine with me.

I personally think that Sirius should only broadcast one call per game to avoid unnecessary pre-emption of other talk streams. As popular as the NFL will be, there will be plenty of people that won't want their favorite weekend talk programming to be pre-empted.

And I know plenty of people who will now get Sirius because they will hear their team called by their announcers every game. While it might seem weird to you, think of it as Sirius Left vs. Sirius Right. Both focus on similar issues, but with different perspectives on it.

That's a good point, however depending on what content is pre-empted, it might be too high a price to pay. It sounds like they will need around 15 streams just for football. If there are any basketball or hockey games going on at the same time, it could be even more.

I think the NHL and NBA know who the big dog is and tend to schedule around the NFL to the extent possible. For instance, while this weekend featured a fair amount of Sunday afternoon games in the NHL, Sunday is normally a light schedule day in the fall, with primarily night games.
Although my brother-in-law once saw a few innings of a Rockies game, left to see the Broncos play, then walked over to an Avalanche game that night.

I am happy to hear that both sides will be presented. A local crew has a bias. Quality of announcer also varies by team. Some teams have excellent announcers... people that paint a great picture of what's happening on the field, while others go off on tangents while action is taking place and every once in a while, update you with what has been happening. I recall (two years ago) listening to a basketball game (Timberwolves vs. Lakers... getting the Timberwolves announcers) where one team (Lakers) went on a 10-0 run without any hint that it was happening until after it happened... all because the announcers were talking about a player. My brother and I had started watching the game on TV, but had to go to Sacramento and figured we'd listen to the game on the way. We were getting quite irritated with the Timberwolf announcers. I'd rather have listened to the Laker announcers if I could. At one point, I decided I'd like to check on other sports scores and went to ESPN... low-and-behold... they too were doing the Timberwolves-Lakers game... with a semi-unbiased approach (one announcer sounded like he favored Minnesota, while the other sounded like he favored LA).

When it comes to football, I want to hear Greg Papa and Tom Flores call the action for the Raiders. (If I can't WATCH the game live... I get poor reception on the Raiders home station, and I KNOW my brother would like to hear them, if he can't get the Raider game in Nebraska.)

A big "thumbs up" to Sirius for the news that they'll provide both home and away announcers! I'm even willing to let go of possible weekend talk programming to do so.

Football fans who follow a team are very rabid, and very set, about having their own home team's announcers.

Cleveland is a perfect example. While anyone just about anywhere in NE Ohio can hear the Browns on local over-air radio (I can personally pick up about a half-dozen Browns affiliates with listenable signals here in Akron), there are a LOT of expatriate NE Ohio residents all over the country. I was one of them until recently...I lived in Southwest Virginia and Northern California, neither of them great places to get Browns games on either TV or radio.

Those "Browns Backers" - who are large in number...I think Sacramento alone had about 200 members...will be THRILLED to get Jim Donovan and Doug Dieken on pretty much any Sunday. I know I would have been. Imagine a Browns/Steelers games, and these poor guys and gals being forced to listen to Myron Cope on the Steelers network! Yecch!

I can't remember how many NFL games happen in one time slot, but I think it's on the order of 7 or so. 14 streams max. Overlap will probably be solved by joining the late game in progress. I think they can handle that in their current configuration...I see 14 streams marked as "can be pre-empted by sports".
