And I dont mean rap and hip hop!! I mean old skool r&b, funk, soul- hits from late 70s thru early 90s. Why cant Sirius afford us this genre of music to a channel devoted 100% 24/7 to old skool? I think we have an overkill of hip hop , rap and such already.
I know they add and delete channels, so here is my request- I think this music is being overlooked. Soul Revue 53 is not representing- it is 60s thru the mid 80s. I may like Motown, but I dont want it mixed in with my funk and other jamz from back in the day. There needs to be a cut off and the two eras dont mix well . Ive had enough of most new channels being new music, I want my FUNK!! Give up da funk!! Peace out!
It wont happen, if you are black and over 35 or enjoy old skool r&b, Sirius is ignoring you. They are cattering to 18-29 black listener with hip hop and r&b, if youre an old cat daddy like me (44), they dont hear your voice. They used to have the Express- a great channel of late 70s to early 90s r&b classic hits (non hip hop/rap) for ADULT listeners, they dropped it. Many on here have been complaining for almost 2 years, so if it aint happened by now , it wont. Someone (consultants?) at Sirius think if you are black, you must love hip hop and rap no matter what your age. They are wrong (again). Thats why I picked up a subscription to XM, they have The Groove-64, old skool r&b. While it isnt as good as Sirius Express used to be, it fills in the HUGE void at Sirius! Good luck on this one- I cant see it happening....
Just wondering, doesn't Heart & Soul and Slow Jamz cover these songs? I can't remember all the songs from the early '90's cause I'm pretty young so guys will have better understanding then me. Didn't most of the Dj's from H & S come from The Express?
Heart & Soul did evolve from the Express, and its Dj's came from the Express. However, Heart & Soul doesnt play often enough or deep enough the old skool jamz from back in da day---it plays usually, the softer sided ones, not the more edgy-funky types. It is a mix of new & old urban adult r&b hits. The Express went much deeper, and played FUNK!! I would bet Heart & Soul plays maybe 1/3 of the former Express playlist. It is time to bring back ALL old skool/funk!
Let me tell you it was a sad sad day at my house when Sirius cancelled the Express. That stream's music playlist was light years better than the Groove's. I remember right after Sirius began broadcasting I'd started listening to 44 on the web after becoming disillusioned with getting my requests played on The Groove and having to sit through way too many Motown, Philly International and obscure doo wop cuts to hear my beloved funk. After one hour of listening to the Express I was hooked! I'm a 47 year old African American and I considered 44 to be the soundtrack of my life, growing up as a young funkateer in North Carolina in the 70's, toting my albums, 12" singles, turntables and mixer from house party to house party back in the day. A few months later, because of the Express, I made up my mind to buy a subscription to Sirius. But it was then that the suits/consultants decided to alienate the 35 to 55 y/o old school funk lovers like myself by killing that stream to make way for Heart & Soul. I like Heart & Soul, but I LOVED THE EXPRESS. LOVED IT. Big difference. I don't jam Heart & Soul at my card or house parties, but the Express I did! Soul Revue tries to pick up the slack in lieu of the Express, but it is not the same. My iPod has become what Stream 44 was to me. And now, some 5,000+ old school funk songs later, I think I have successfully recreated the stream, and then some, minus the air talent. But I wish Sirius would reconsider their callous decision. Removing 44 was a travesty, a huge mistake. Why can't they kill Slow Jams and bring back the Express? Slow Jams and Heart & Soul practically mimmick each other in most dayparts IMO. I hope this rant of mine made some sense -- I'm typing with a hangover from partying last night. Too many margaritas SIRIUS, PLEASE BRING BACK THE FUNK! I WANT MY EXPRESS STREAM BACK, full time, 24/7 dammit!
Once again T-Bite has it right-- Heart & Soul is a good urban ac channel (best of old & new) but it isnt all old skool as the Express was. I agree also, that Slow Jamz 52 and Heart & Soul 51 are too close to each other in programming- they both play the best of today and yesterday urban adult songs. Why not convert Slow Jamz into the Express, and Heart & Soul can continue with virtually the same format it has now, because Slow Jamz is almost a mirror copy? This would free up a channel for a real 1975-95 old skool/funk/classic r&b channel!! Anyone at Sirius reading this? We pay for this, you hear what the listeners and fans of this music are asking for......... :\
Even the NY Times recognizes a need for the addition of a 24/7 old school funk music channel (something like the old Sirius Express 44) to one or both satellite radio services.
Here's the last paragraph of this three page article, Cutting Edge Playlists and Obscure Gems:
XM and Sirius each have a station focused on jam bands, but there are no stations devoted to funk, and limited options for world music that doesn't emanate from Africa, Latin America or the Caribbean. Even the wide expanses of satellite radio have borders.
I repeat...... Sirius is losing a large audience here. The whole of a people just because of their race cant be stereotyped. Not everyone of my race (black) listens to rap and hip hop--- I am past that, too old.. and I want to listen to old r&b on one channel that doesnt have to share with newer music!! I love heart & soul , but I want r&b classics from the last 25 years or so, not mixed with 60s soul. Why is this so difficult to understand? Motown 60s do not mix with late 80s funk. One channel for a large segment of the audience who feels very left out and ignored. People of my age/ethnic background are looking and going to XM because of this, a huge void in Sirius programming.
Yes, my friends are picking XM over Sirius chiefly because of the lack of an old school channel for adults over 35. 4 have gone with XM mainly for this very reason. Do they realize they are excluding a sizeable market here?
