Default BACKSPIN

BACKSPIN NEEDS TO PLAY MORE 90'S HIP HOP! I LIKE THE 80'S STUFF BUT THATS ALL THEY SEEM TO PLAY. YOU KNOW, 90'S IS OLD SCHOOL TOO BECASUE IT WAS GOOD HIP HOP, NOT THE CRAP THEY ARE CALLING HIP HOP TODAY. SOME ARTISTS I'D LIKE TO HEAR MORE OF...

WU TANG SOLO ACTS- RAEKWON, METHOD MAN, GZA, OL DIRTY BASTARD ETC.... CLASSICS!

ARTIFACTS
DAS EFX
THE GURU
DEL THE FUNKEE HOMOSAPIEN
DIGABLE PLANETS
JERU THE DAMAJA

to name a few.....

Nooooooooooooooo!!!!!! I think Backspin is perfect the way it is.... There are plenty of other streams that will play the 90's stuff on Sirius..

As much as I hate to recommend XM here, you may want to consider XM's "the Rhyme" - They are definitely more in line with your perception of old school.. For me however, Backspin is exactly my perception of what it should be...

LOL, well I agree with jimbolax, but you dont need to go to XM for that... check out BOOMBOX- 61 they play a lot of old wutang, leaders of the new school, tribe like check the rhyme...
but i love break beats so 61 is the best of both worlds for me!

I also feel that backspin needs to start adding more music like tribe called quest, leaders of the new school , delasoul, black sheep, kool g rap , etc.
i just feel like everytime i listen to backspin i keep hearing the same songs
especially from the 80's.

To me backspin and roadhouse seem to have that same issues, you hear alot of those tunes you loved and forgot about, but every fifth song or so is one that seems to be played everyday. And yeah I always check boombox when I am in the rap mood.

Boombox61 plays some tribe called quest but I wish they would more, as well as similar artists. (The problem is the 2 formats I don't think blend that well, hip hop and dance/beats)

Old School is the eighties and late seventies. Nineties is not old school.

There were 3 main genres of Rap in the nineties - Hip Hop, Rap and Gangsta. Hip Hop consisted of artists like "A Tribe Called Quest" and "Digable Planets", Gangsta is self explanatory and Rap encompassed everyone else.

Old School signifies a group of artists that were instrumental in the growth and development of the Hip Hop genre. Artists like Run DMC, Kool Moe Dee, Grandmaster Flash, Whodini, Doug E. Fresh, Slick Rick, Salt n Pepa, Public Enemy, LL Cool J, UTFO, Sugarhill Gang, Melle Mel, Davy DMX, Fat Boys, Beastie Boys, Roxanne Shante, Ice T, NWA, and Boogie Down Productions just to name a few. All of the above mentioned artists paved the road for Rap in the nineties.

lol you'll never get an consensus on this for many reasons...

Old school is relative... Rap is so young, that's why it seems so undefinable to have even breaks. Old school is basically whats not new, more than 5 years old... I'm 26 so the music that i listened to from 88-2000 to now is my music. anything before that was old school (Grandmaster flash, afrika bambatta, DMC, beastie, mc lyte, LL,

Now to a kid that is 13 now, all of the things i listened to would be old school for him, tribe, blacksheep, de la soul, even wu-tang because thats not what he's listening to now on the radio and buying in the stores.

The industry doesnt help either... Rap is rap and rap is music, hip-hop isn't a music term. Its a culture, a way of life... Rap didnt define me as a member of the hip-hop generation, and i dont think that these kids now days are a part of it. Just like neo-soul isnt a correct music term but thats for another post on another day... I dont think that gangsta rap is a term either, thats just something that the media came up with and everyone ran with. i think we try to define music too much, narrow it into chunks...

back to the point, old school is defined by the person and as long as people my age and older are making the decisions, old school will remain as pre 1990-1991. 1989 was probally the climax of the hip-hop message for me, do the right thing, PE, tribe came out that year...

I think sirius is doing it right and i enjoy backspin...

90's is old school? LOL, you've got to be kidding me, right?

Actually, I've had Sirius for about 2 weeks now and to me, they don't play enough old school on Backspin. When I tried out Sirius online, I listened to Backspin for at least a day, and I don't recall much of anything past '88 being played. But now that I have it, I hear way too much stuff from the late 80's, and even Bone Thugs 'n Howcananybodylistentothisshit? Come on, Sirius ... you've got three other channels to play that shit on - please keep it off Backspin!! Us 'oldtimers' want none of that. I hope they're not going in the same direction as The Rhyme - mostly 90's gangsta rap with a few old school tunes thrown in now and then.

I agree. I'm fairly new to Sirius and Backspin is one of my favorite stations. To me, old school is pre Run DMC, as even they said in 1984 "It's all new school, never ever old school."
Now I don't expect to hear Grandmaster Flash and Sugarhill songs all day long, but the cut off should be at least 1990.
And you best believe that when any Bone song comes on, the station is changed with the quickness.
