They were talking about the replacement for the E! show this morning and that it would be shot in high def. This is awesome!! The only bad thing is that I have DirecTV and I'm not switching to cable just for this. I wonder if DTV can somehow work something out with In Demand to get Stern's show and just broadcast them on some channel or something. If not, I'll just download the stuff off usenet, since I'm sure someone will post it on there.
They also stated that Stern content will be available on On Demand starting November 18th. They are going to be re-editing old E! shows and broadcasting them uncensored. It's more than just removing the black bars though. They are completely re-editing the shows since the E! show would cut out a lot of good stuff.

Yeah, I heard that too. Sounds like it should be really good.
But I'm in the same boat as you. I have Dish and don't really want to change over to cable. I think it's a disaster that it's only available on cable. But I'll have to admit, it is tempting me to consider cable.
They also said they were going to put up a bunch of the staff's home movies. Howard said he had home movies to put up, Bababooey's love tape, Richard Christy has some full-length movies he's made, and JD was ordered to make a film for the launch. It should be interesting stuff.
Hmmmmm....

I'd be pleasantly suprised if it was broadcasted in high-def. Comcast hasn't added any HD channels in a while so I thought they might be out of bandwidth. Can anyone confirm this?

Well, considering Comcast owns part of In Demand, I'd think they'd do it in high def. Who knows??
I went reading in DirecTV forums about In Demand. It looks like DTV is in talks with them about adding their content to DTV.

How does satellite TV send information upstream?
I had thought that it worked like satellite radio---your receiver gets all the channels and the box just determines what's showing.
But for OnDemand, you need to send information the other way---you need to tell the central office or whatever that you want a particular show at a particular time.
How would that be implemented for satellite TV?

For that matter, how would it work downstream?
If one person requests an OnDemand show to start right now, would DirectTV then send that up to the satellite to send to you? What if a million different subscribers asked for different things?

Satellite TV doesn't have on-demand, the only thing similar is auto-recorded clips in the middle of the night that you can play, but that's obviously only on the DVRs.

See Hoffer's post a few up...
Sattelite up here has the payperview channels that you dont need to call for. You just click a button on your remote and it automatically gets billed to your account and the movie starts. So I dont think its impossible to have an ondemand network for satellite if this is possible.

They kind of have VOD on DirecTV now, but you do need a DVR. For example, if you get Starz, you get Starz On Demand. All it does is record certain shows off Starz in the middle of the night. The next morning, your Starz On Demand has those shows. So, it isn't a 2-way VOD like In Demand is on non-DVR cable boxes.
DirecTV is coming out with their own DVRs now. They are trying to distance themsevles from TiVo because then they don't have to pay TiVo anymore. I've heard that the DTV DVRs will use something like 20-40% of the hard drive space for VOD content. This content will just get downloaded at night or something.
I've also heard about some burst mode thing that might be coming out. This burst mode doesn't download shows in real time like when you're watching TV. It blasts a whole 2 hour show to your DVR in like 10 minutes. This of course would still get broadcast at certain times and sit on your hard drive. This way they could send 20 shows to you in the middle of the night instead of just 2.
I'd say VOD is something that the cable companies will always have a leg-up on satellite. At least until they get multi-terabyte hard drives in DVRs and they can store hundreds of hours of high def programming on it. Either that or maybe we can connect our DirecTV boxes to our home network and do the VOD over the internet. Of course that would only work for people with a good broadband connection.

That will be cool, but could also be bad. Imagine some skank porn star with big zits on her rear. Do you want to see that in high def?? Or how about when they had the hemoroid contest last year!!!

on demand is a great service from digital cable.... its so much more then just movies......its the only thing keeping me with comcast....
with that service from dish or directv you'd still be at the mercy of what is on TV that night.....

9.99 for first 3 months, then 13.99 after....
Let's see what my options are:
$300 and a additional sub fee for the S50, and record the audio to listen later
Take that $300 and buy 21 months of Stern On Demand.

Thanks for the web site link. I'm going to have to think about this.
An extra $14/month to my already high cable bill...plus what I am already paying for Sirius, largely for Howard...
I guess with all the t&a of the re-edited old shows and the new shows coming in April, I'm scared if I order it, I might *only* watch this channel...

I called my local cable company, to see if they have the Howard Stern channel on OnDemand and thay don't have it yet, maybe sometime next year they might have it, that what they told me! That really sucks!

I second that. I used to have Cablevision, and I have had DirecTV for the last year. I would never go back. They charge 5 bucks a month for their Tivo service and it is fantastic.
Man, I would love to see the old E shows uncensored

I still haven't seen anything saying that the shows are in High-Def. Has anyone confirmed that they are?

I don't have HDTV and I can see all the shows...there's no separate HD menu and when I signed up, no one asked me about HD...
My verdict: no high-def...

I have to agree. If they were High-Def I'm sure they'd promote that fact.

Stern had the producer of the new Sirius/OnDemand show on. That was why I started this thread. The producer said that the Sirius shows will be recorded with high definition cameras and broadcast in high def. The old E! shows where recorded with standard def cameras. So, they won't be in high def.
When they start showing new stuff next year, it should be in HD.

That makes sense then, the old stuff couldn't be in Hi-Def. That's an added bonus to subscribe to the OnDemand to know that when the new show starts in January that it will be offered in High-Def.
