I've always wanted to visit Alaska. I had some friends come up there a couple of years ago and we were going to join them. However at the last minute hell broke loose and I was just not able to manage the time away necessary for such a trip.
Alaska is a great vacation destination, it is 1/5 as big as all the USA, approx 600,000 sq miles!! It has more coastline than all other 49 states combined, 18 of the 20 tallest mountains in America are in Alaska, it has thousands of square miles of forests teeming with wildlife. Glaciers cover only 5% of Alaska- but that means 30,000 sq miles of ice fields!! One is larger than the enite state of Rhode Island. Alaska's 3,000,000 lakes sort of blows away Minnesota's 10,000- and again, one of them is bigger than Rhodel Island!! Many people ask, whats the weather like? Thats like asking what is the weather like in the USA? Alaska is so vast that it depends where you are in it. Summer temps range from the 50s to 90s and winter temps from the +30s to -50!!! Anchorage and its surrounding area is home to over half of the state's population. And no, there isnt 6 months of darkness followed by 6 months of daylight- not quite. The longest day in Anchorage in the southern part of Alaska is about 20 hours long in June, the shortest in December offers up about 6 hours of light. To the far extream north at Point Barrow (950 miles north of Anchorage, the sun doesnt set for 3 months in the summer and doesnt get above the horizon for 3 months in the dead of winter. More seafood and petroleum come from Alaska than any other state. Alaska is also rich in coal, zinc, gold and timber. Eagles are not endangered up here with over 50,000 of them, and neither are Grizzly bears- about 50,000 of them too!! Alaskan's are a friendly lot, and no, most are not Eskimo (only 7%are) and no one lives in an igloo (your house would melt every summer)!! Whether you wish to stay in a Hilton, Sheraton, Marriott, Howard Johnson, Holiday Inn or a bed & breakfast- the facilities are first class and the sights are impressive- join 2 million other "lower 48" visitors each year to our great 49th state!!! See ya here!
I went to Alaska on a cruise once and it is amazing. I've also ben back to Anchorage on a separate trip a few years later.
I remember watching the sun set and then rise back up a few hours later. It was cool.
Part of me thinks it would be fun to spend one year in a place like Point Barrow and experience the 3 months of darnkess vs the 3 months of light.

i was in Anchorage in late august. I saw a fair number of satellite radio antennae, id say most were Sirius. Most were on cars with out of state plates but a couple were on alaskan cars.
