I have not installed, activated or anything with the unit I just purchased and will be returning today.
The advertising for the S50 needs to be clearer!
Not to beat a dead and obviously uninformed horse here, but these statements irked me as well so I have to respond.
We're in a world now of information overload and to buy something for 300 bucks without knowing anything about it and then complain about the advertising -- which didn't seem to have any impact on the purchase anyway -- makes no sense at all.
Plus, then not to even try the product, what a genius!
Here’s my 2 cents on improvements that I would like to see;
1) The ability to stream ALL channels from my computer. If I have the S50 hooked up to my computer, I don’t see what the big deal is. If I’ve paid for the subscription and a player, I should be able to listen via my computer. I work in an office building and cannot receive a signal from deep inside the building. If they make this change, I see myself buying another S50 for myself just so I can listen to non-music channels at work, i.e. Stern.
2) If the above isn’t possible, at least give us the ability to “love†a song while the unit is connected to the computer when streaming the music channels.
3) The ability to manage the playlists from the software. It’s not a huge issue with me but seems like it’s something fairly basic that can be done as an enhancement to the software.
4) The ability to backup the content from the player to the computer. If need be, it could be protected from being able to be played directly from the computer. Then, if I have to do a factory reset, I could move back the songs/shows to the S50. Again, seems like an easy enhancement.
5) Once the home docking station becomes available and it doesn’t have the ability to transmit to a stereo receiver that will be disappointing. Perhaps, they could develop a home docking station that can be plugged directly into AC that transmit the FM signal (I’m currently using the handy radio shack gizmos but this setup is a bit cumbersome).
Overall, the wife and I are extremely pleased about the S50 and relieved that the problems aren't widespread.

Thanks for your comments and suggestions. I copied them over to Vol V, so that others could make comments. Again thanks a lot...
Using the Sirius Studio software I can not play recorded songs or recorded shows from the S50 on the PC. The software lets me play MP3’s off the device and it lets me stream Sirius radio from the web.
When I double click on a show it does nothing. The play button does not work either.
Anyone else with this issue? It does it on two different machines.

This not a bug and is intentional.

The My Sirius Studio Software does not give you the ability to play satellite downloaded content off your S50 Media Player. I don't think there is any documentation indicating that it would, unless I over looked it.
I like my S50 and it does everything advertised but this device has so much more potential if it did not have to comply with so many foolish rules.
I want to be able to record anything, any length at any time like my Tivo.
I want to be able to stream anything recorded on to my PC like my Tivo.
I want to be able to archive anything I record like my Tivo.
I want to be able to convert its proprietary format to a format that can be played on any digital player like my Tivo
Why are there different rules for a Tivo then a S50.
the S50 home kit is showing up in the stores. The Circuit City closest to me has at least one in stock. Reports from across the US are confirming the home kits are hitting the shelves. I assume the Sirius Store will be shipping Monday (hopefully).

This is my first post, although I’ve been obsessing over this thread for about five days. I was looking forward to S50 but I have made the very painful decision to hold off for now. I am not technologically adept enough to resolve the glitches that have surfaced and although my primary use for this device is to record Stern in the evening to listen to the next day, I would still like to record any channel I want, whenever I want for as long as I want.
Regarding the ability to record the Stern show; am I correct that although you can adapt the car dock for home, only the home dock will activate automatically to record Stern in the evening? Do I need to activate the car dock manually? I cannot leave the S50 in my car overnight and do not feel like having my POCKET PICKED by shelling out an additional hundy for the home unit.

It sure is. It does come with a remote. Well mine did even though the manual says it doesn't.

That's exactly why you can't play through the computer, so you can't "archive" it.
The different rules are there because the RIAA enforces the law through their lawyers. Unless you find a way to hack the S50 and it's software you're never going to be able to buy a satellite radio receiver that does this.
THE S50 DOES RECORD 4 HOUR BLOCKS OF ANY MUSIC YOU WANT ! !
You must work for XM radio, everything I am reading about the S50 as far as reviews is all lies. I REALLY DO OWN a S50 (bought it from Crutchfield) and it does record by song AND ALSO FOUR HOUR BLOCKS OF ANY MUSIC. To record a four hour block of music hit the play / pause button twice on ANY CHANNEL (ie Octane) after 4 hours of recording the segment will fall under “content management†newly labeled "MY OCTANE" or whatever channel you had it on. When you listen to your new 4 hour block of whatever it will let you move forward by song, so you can skip the ones you dont like just like a MP3 player. The instruction manual wasn’t too clear on this so I called the special S50 # @ 800-869-5364 and they walked me through it, those guys know the unit very well. Dont believe all the hype on the net, lots of XM employees are bashing this unit for obvious reasons, it does EXACTLY what it promises.
Best regards
Morgan
PS the help line said it will record up to 50+ hours of music segments, haven’t had it long enough to verify that
These guys on Fox News explain the S50 in a very simple way. You have to watch a 30 second commercial, a piece on some neat binoculars, a NFL cell phone and then the S50 piece. The Next Big Thing

Please note that SBS does not guarantee the above post to be true. In fact I personally highly doubt it.

I was ready to scrap the whole S50 idea yesterday after returning my first unit which probably could have been fixed with the new updated software. But to tell the truth, since I downloaded the update and completed a full restore on my 2nd unit via the USB cable, I haven't had a single problem. Currently I've loaded up around 10 hours from Sirius Hits 1, Octane and Alt Nation. Everything appears to be working. Having had Sirius for about 2.5 years this is definitely the BEST receiver I've owned to date. 10 on the cool factor.
