Can I record at home without unit being hooked up to stereo system?
Also, if my cigarette lighter in my car works when I'm not driving, can I record in my car when I'm not in it and it's not running?
i have th same question -- i have the option to connect the lighter DC plug to a unswitched power source and if thats the case the car dock will have constant power.
I'm assuming that the unit will detect this and turn on when it needs to record.
The only problem with this connection method is that you will need to power off the unit when you turn off the car. -- kind of annoying, but probably necessary if you want to record in the car.
remember this unit seems to have issues when its cold, so i probably wont leave it in the car, i may need to set up a connection in my home to record during the night.

You can record at home using the S50 Home Kit - which works really well- or by using the car kit along with the Radio Shack power adapter.

Well, this isn't completely true if you have been reading this forum. There are many people (including me, obviously) having recording problems with defective (oops - buggy) S50's.

I 'm not speaking for everyone - obviously - Just speaking from my experience.
In the manual and the FAQ, it states that that schedule recordings can only be done via the home dock. If you leave the S50 on it will record in the auto cradle, but it cannot wake it up while its off in order to record. It will only do this in the home cradle.

Not quite. You can schedule recording while in the car dock as long as the power is on. Not as option in my car as both outlets are switched.
With the thermostat set to a nice toasty 78 degrees, I've left my S50 sitting in the car dock (with AC to cigarette lighter adapter) in my office for several days now. The dock is running about 90 degrees F and the S50 maxed out around 100 or so degrees F. These temps are well below the "destruction" point of these types of devices so I think it's pretty safe to leave the S50 on for extended periods of time (hopefully the screen isn't affected too much). If you're waiting for a home dock, just use the car dock inside and leave it on for your recording needs.

Tom that is what I said, you can record as long as it is powered because it will not wake up the car cradle. It will wake up the home cradle just fine.
