Never been much for the Jimmy Buffett vibe, which IMO is really more about the laid-back island lifestyle, which doesn't particularly appeal to me, than his music being particularly good. Never got to hear "Vacation" but I have to believe that it was better than this.
I'm not big on the single-artist channels, and so far having reviewed Shade 45 and Margaritaville, I'm not much for the artist-programmed ones either. I do like Outlaw Country (which hasn't come up yet), though.
I have only been listening to this station for a couple of hours. I do like a couple of Jimmy Buffett songs, but I am not a Parrothead, by any means. I have enjoyed what I listened to thus far on Radio Margaritaville. But I am confused as to its 'format' and I am trying to figure it out. In one stretch it went from UB40 (who I hate), to Jimi Hendrix's All Along The Watchtower (which i LOVE) to Bonnie Raitt and Bruce Springstein (again, artists I really enjoy). So, I am liking the mix of artists that are played here, but I am curious as to what style/genre/format that is going on with this station...
Radio Margaritaville is one of my "B" presets because I like the mix of artists that play here. But, at the same time, it really seems unnecessary to have this channel playing these songs. What do Marvin Gaye, James Taylor, and The Beatles have to do with the concept of Margaritaville?
If Sirius really wanted to have Jimmy Buffett, I wish instead that they could have incorporated him somehow into the old Vacation format, instead of classic rock type songs.
Still, I keep it as a preset because they do play songs I like.
Not a big parrothead, but do like some Buffet songs. Mostly the ones with Utley who does the steel drums. This is a preset of mine.
I listen mostly for the steel drum bands which I absolutely love. Utley/Greenrdige, Carnival Steel Drum Band, Byron Lee and The Dragonaires. I named my son Byron and I find it a coincidence that I absolutely love steel drums and listen to CD's of it to find out 9 months later that there is Steel Drum performer named Byron. They also play traditional hawaiian music which is a real nice change of pace. Not frequently done, but a great little break.
The format is Jimmy's favorite songs, so the other artisits are just one's he happens to like, no real format.
I never heard Vacation, but I think I would like it better.

Same thing here. "Vacation" was before my Sirius time. Can someone explain to me what it was. By the sounds of some of the threads, it seems like it was enjoyed by quite a few.

Vacation was advertised as "a mix of tropical, calypso, reggae, Hawaiian and other music you'd hear on an island vacation."
It's a shame that Sirius took away Vacation. It really was enjoyable.
I listened to Radio Margaritaville yesterday on my drive from Springfield, MO to Muskogee, OK.
The music was ok, until they got to a live Jimmy Buffet concert. I guess most of the people that go to JB Concerts must be out of there head drunk, because that was the worst concert I've ever heard. Sounded like everyone was having a good time, though...
The music was relaxing. Not good when you've been driving all day and it's 8pm CDT. Maybe if I were down in the Dominican visiting the CSR's...
I think it's pretty cool that they simulcast all of the Jimmy Buffet concerts. I know he has a lot of devoted fans, and if the channel is promoted visibly at the shows, I'm sure it brings in a lot of subs. I listened to the concert on Thursday. I have to admit I'm not much of a fan - I think he's a mediocre songwriter and an even worse singer. But I definitely understand his appeal - a "changes in lattidude" party atmosphere all the time. Nothing wrong with that.
As for the rest of the programming (everything other than the live concerts), I think it's a muddled mess. There's no real focus to it. All the songs are often heard on other channels - Vinyl, JamOn, Vibrations, etc. I never really listened to Vacation when it was here. I suspect it might have been better to graft the Buffett concerts onto the Vacation channel.
I was thinking, what other current bands would be good to broadcast all of their shows. It has to be a band with a super-devoted following, with each concert a unique show. Since the Grateful Dead and Phish are no longer touring, I'm thinking Pearl Jam. Maybe broadcast their concerts on Alt Nation. I can't think of anyone else.
Not a bad station, but I agree that there isn't much of a focus. It is kinda like a supershuffle or one of those "we play anything" stations on FM. I might tune in from time to time if I"m looking for something different. I caught one of the concerts as well. I'm not a Buffet fan, but I'm glad those that are can listen to their concerts.
Plus, all Buffet should be banned from bar jukeboxes!
I am still on the fence about this channel. Like most of the posts above, I am no parrothead, but i enjoy a few Jimmy Buffett songs. I was totally confused at the format (see my earlier post) as the mix was all over the place. However, it seemed like 1 out of every 4 songs would be a Buffett song (which i guess makes sense for this channel), but I found the more I listened to the station, the more I didn't want to hear another Jimmy song. I enjoyed a lot of the 'other' artisits that were played in between JB songs.
I tried to listen to one of the concerts, and just couldn't get through it. Just not for me i guess. I can see stopping by 31, once in a while for a change of pace, but not a preset for me.
