Default Neccesary to have home kit?

Do you think it is really neccesary to have the homekit. Couldn't you use the headphone jack to run to speakers or sound system. Also, I'm guessing you can't plug the antenna straight into the stilletto (couldn't you use wifi). Just wanted to know what people's opinions are, as it gets pricey with all the kits.

Default Tell Me About It

I have preordered, Unit, Two home Kits and a car kit. One home kit for the house and the other for the office since I don't want to have to shuttle the home kit back and forth. The problem with the wifi as I read the manual, you can't record when receiving the net transmission which kind of kills it for me. I plan on doing a lot of recording since I miss a lot throughout the day.

You have exactly the setup I have with the S50. Homedock at home and work and car kit.

Curious, how do you plan to use the headphones with the homedock at work? The jack is on the bottom of the Stiletto and will be covered while it's in the homedock. Your only other alternative is to use the lineout jack in the back of the homedock. I've noticed on my S50 homedock that the lineout does not have the range of volumn as the headphone jack on the unit. At it's lowest volumn setting it's higher than what I usually listen to during the day. So the lineout I don't see working for me either.

There is an open thread on this and noone is answering. Not sure if they don't know or maybe it's a stupid question. Any ideas?

Why did they put the headphone jack on the bottom? What is the advantage to this?

Probably a couple reasons. A big reason I think is because the wifi and satellite antennas are toward the top of the device. They were probably better positioned above the battery for better reception. Another reason might be to more closely match the location on the iPod. The iPods also have their jack on the bottom. Considering the iPod is the "golden nugget" of portable devices they probably figured it would be best to match as many features as possible.

I'm not complaining where the jack is located. I just don't see how it's feasible to use the Stiletto with headphones while in the home dock. This is really only a concern at work.

Interesting, is it the Nano or Shuffle that has is on the bottom? I've had 4 different Ipods and they've all had the headphone connection on top.

I'm not sure the connection on top would improve reception but maybe.

I know the nano has the connection at the bottom. Considering it's one of their newer devices maybe they modeled after it. Who knows what goes on in minds of a marketing analyst.

Look at your cell phones. They all have connections at the bottom. I think the same reason to get away from the antenna.

But what about the question davejulien asked? This is a different situation from a cell phone.

Default bottom headphone jack

For the Ipod there are probably a couple of reasons for having the jack at the bottom.

1. Layout of internals (this thing is incredible thin, so the design may influence the location of some electronics).
2. It was made to be worn on a lanyard, therfore, the best position for the headphones is at the bottom (this is the one I believe most)

As for the Stiletto, it would seem that the top half of the device is used for receiving signals (call it the bump). I think for this reason, they would locate the headphone jack away for clearer reception.

I'm still curious how you would use headphones while in the homedock. Lineout probably won't work as well as a dedicated headphone jack.

Any ideas?

I really don't think it was intended to use the headphone jack while in the home dock. In fact it will probably be impossible since the headphone plug and the dock plug are both on the bottom like a cell phone. Putting the headphone jack near the antenna on top would cause interference with the signal and degrade reception.

So what's the answer when trying to listen at work? I'm at work 9 hours a day and listen for probably 6 of them. By that time the Stiletto would run out of battery power especially if I'm recording. The only alternative is to get the headphones to work properly through the lineout jack or to purchase the boombox which I really have no need for.

I can't believe they didn't think of this. We need a homedock with a headphone jack!!

yea, both of the nanos have it on the bottom. I happen to not like the bottom connection that much. I think it makes things more complicated when working out.

Why not just run from the Line Out on the dock to the Line In on your computer? Then you can listen through your computer's headphones or speakers.
