Why will the Stiletto not have a song/artist seek feature?
This is the question I pose to anyone here or at Sirius. WHY? XM, sadly to say was able to incorporate this feature in both their portable models allowing for a 20 song seek list. Well that's really quite disappointing and shocking to say the least. That's a feature I really enjoy on my Starmate Replay.. Now to give that up if I change to a Stiletto is making think twice about buying one. That's such a shame. Why can't Sirius do the same. Anyone have any answer to this?
this just came to me. the stiletto will be running linux. i'm sure someone will come out with an app that does this, and you can install it on the stiletto with some tweaking of the OS.

Nice to know some possibility exists, but why didn't Sirius just incorporate this feature right in the player like XM did. Sounds like a really stupid decision to me.

The OS can't be tweaked. They have it encrypted.
If it could be tweaked then I would imagine someone could steal the service because they could override the ESN code.
Nothing wrong with recording the song but I still want the Song Artist feature to work so I know when my fav songs or artists come on. There's no reason why they couldn't of done this, XM incorporated it into all there portable live units.
This is also my favorite current feature...beep, I see that another artist is on another station. Weird they wouldn't have this and XM does on their unit.
To answer the question the feature probably isn't in there because of the RIAA. The RIAA probably says you can let them record 10 hours of songs but you can't make it easy for them.
I'm slightly amnused by everyone saying lately that since its running Linux that you can do whatever with it now. Linux isn't the gateway to running apps on a device. But, it's a definate solution to helping out. But something doesnt need linux running nateively to do it. Seveal eletronics dont have linux, but people learnt to install it later, like ipod, the Nitnendo DS (which i have a lot of knowledge in, as far as homebrew goes), and other consoles, like the PSP and gamecube, etc.
Anyways, It's too bad thats not a feature, though.
not tweaking the OS. but someone putting on an app for artist seek or something. i'd say its possible.
The only way it could become a reality is if they left some sort of "hook" in the code that would allow you to extend the devices functionality. You would need this hook because you cannot alter the base code due to encryption. This would be similar to "skinning" other applications with extensions and such.
Could they have left the ability to do this? Absolutely! Did they provide this capability? I highly doubt it.
You can believe what you want though. Noone has done anything like this with the S50 which was the only other device firmware updatable. Once they start introducing hooks in the code there is the capability for an exploit and they surely don't want that. My guess is they want the device as locked down as possible.
The only thing I'm aware of that you can override would be wallpapers and voice prompts. This is because they left the ability to do so. Just because something is coded in a particular language doesn't open it up to the world for modification.
Did everyone forget about the RIAA and the lawsuit against XM for this insignificant feature? Personally, I do not like the beeping of the radio when listening and do not use artist and or song seek.

I think I'll stick with my Starmate replay with the 30 song/Artist seek. I cant accept being without this feature and I get many comments about how cool, effective, and really innovative it is. It's been a very big selling point for others that saw my satellite radio and later bought one because of it. This feature has become very important to me and is one of my favorite features that satellite radio offers. I really thought about it today as I was driving and seeing the song alerts pop up. You don't have to have it beep, you can turn that beep off. I would have missed all these favorite tunes had I lost this feature. At this point losing that feature feels like I'm downgrading by buying a Stiletto. Yes I would love the portability of it but don't think I'll replace my Starmate Replay which has performed flawlessly for me and has a great display, sound, reception, and the seek function. Maybe when Sirius gives us a firmware update to add the seek feature functionality to the Stilleto I'll buy one then. For Sirius to leave out this critical and highly popular feature is not only sad and shocking but plain stupid. I support Sirius all the way and wish them and really want them to have the highest success but this decision to leave out the song/artist seeks on their portables was a big mistake. It just gives there competitor another one up on them. Which they REALLY don't need. Come on Sirius, give us a firmware update for the Stilleto and let us enjoy this powerful, effective feature that XM has allowed on their models. I don't want this feature to make it easier to record my fav songs, I want it to be able to know when there playing real-time on Sirius so I can simply listen to them and enjoy the unique benefits and power of satellite radio!
Think about it, why would you need song/artist seek on a device that "records". In my oppinion, this is much better than seek, cause you can just record the songs you like, then play them back whenever you feel like listening, instead of waiting for them to eventually be played on a channel, like we do today. Recording a song is like the ultimate seek function, you can now listen to the song when you want. Right?
