Default SIRIUS Internet Radio: Imagine the Possibilties

We recently learned that SIRIUS has registered the trademark "SIR" for the SIRIUS Internet Radio service.

While SIRIUS has yet to announce their plans for the service (if it's even a new service), here's are a few cool features I'd like to see:
  1. Stream new channels not available on the satellite service (and maybe bring back some popular deleted formats)
  2. Enable open access so you can play (and control) SIRIUS on multiple devices such as Sonos ZonePlayer, the Roku Soundbridge orSlim Devices Squeezebox
  3. Provide reception options for people who find it difficult to get a satellite signal in the home or office (Stiletto and the upcoming Zing player appear to be the first devices to do so)
  4. WiFi powered signal-repeater to solve in-home reception problems
  5. Internet-only subscription for people who don't want to buy a radio, or for people living outside the USA
None of these ideas are rocket science or costly to implement. I guess we'll have to wait and see if SIRIUS does something revolutionary...or just plays it safe.

Jeff, I agree with all of your things you'd like to see. It also boggles my mind that Sirius hasn't done what XM has done in terms of their Internet streaming.

Didn't Mel hint that online-only accounts would be available sometime soon?

the internet only sub is key imo. i think a lot of people would sign up if the rate was discounted a little.

One more point, send a higher bitrate signal than is sent from the satellites. Better sound quality would be great for a home environment.

I didn't know the Sonos used the WiFi standard?

Sonos is based on 802.11g, while the mesh-network technology runs on a proprietary "Sonosnet" technology.

Default RE: Sirius trademarking SIR

I won't be getting Sirius for the foreseeable future regardless. I am visually impaired and am unable to use any on-line features such as activating radios or managing my account due to Sirius' implementation of that stupid visual verification utility that requires you to "Please enter the code above". I use screen reading software which converts all Windows text and icons to speech but is unable to speak anything which graphically displays numbers such as this. Numerous contact I have made to Sirius have resulted in the standard brush-off. Thanks but no thanks. I'll just stick with XM.

Wow, that's pretty shitty. I had never considered that before. What do you do when buying tickets online? Every baseball game or concert I buy tickets to has one of the word verification thingies.

I may be wrong but isn't there a small speaker icon next to the text box that gives you the option to hear a code instead of read it.

Dude, what are you doing with the back and forth stuff? I just looked over your posts and you have been saying you've had a couple SIRIUS receivers before, and now you say all of a sudden you don't want SIRIUS and you're sticking with XM?

Here are two of your posts, on the same day, just 3 minutes apart. The first post you're lovin' The Vault http://www.siriusbackstage.com/forum...ad.php?t=66260 and then 3 minutes later you say you're not subcribing to SIRIUS because of the OutQ channel? http://www.siriusbackstage.com/forum...035#post392035

And like bmf said in his last post, what do you do when buying stuff online? Those word verification things are everywhere these days.

Now that we've resolved the visually impaired issue, let's get this thread back on topic.

What other features would you like to see for the SIR service?

Jeff

Bandwidth encoding & decoding. They can stick with the 34Kbps but I'd like them to broadcast in shorter packets of data (encode) then in the SIR player, expand the data (decode) so the music will sound as good as the actual player, but still remain at 34 Kbps. Yes, there is software that does this.
