Default Sirius picks up rights to broadcast Chelsea Football

Starting this season SIRIUS, which currently airs multiple EPL games every week throughout the season, will broadcast every Chelsea Premier League game live, providing listeners in the U.S. and Canada access to the official Chelsea club broadcast. This Saturday, September 23, SIRIUS will air Chelsea v. Fulham at 10:00 am ET on channel 125.

Prior to every Chelsea match on SIRIUS, legendary soccer star Giorgio Chinaglia, former New York Cosmos and Italian national team striker, and Charlie Stillitano, former general manager of the New York/New Jersey Metrostars and U.S. Soccer Foundation founding board member, will give fans from coast to coast an expert view of the Club on the Chelsea True Blue show, a 60-minute pre-game show dedicated to all things Chelsea. The program, airing exclusively on SIRIUS channel 125, will include interviews with players and key Chelsea personnel, full match commentary, live feeds from post-match press conferences, listener call-ins and various guests.

Like anything that increases soccer coverage...but really dislike what Chelsea have become. The EPL goes in cycles...a few years ago Manchester United were at the peak of their marketing influence....now it's Chelsea.
One thing I've noticed is that Sirius are not mentioning the BBC show 6-0-6 on their website, which they were broadcasting last year - for British soccer fans in general (not just EPL) that is a great show; shame if it is not picked up this year.

This redneck has to wonder. How many people will listen to Chelsea soccer compared to the recently dropped WSM? Gives me a feel as to who is making programming decisions at Sirius.

Sure, but this is a couple of hours on otherwise unused slots on an already dedicated Sports channel a couple of times a week. My hunch is also that Chelsea are not going to charge much for this, if anything, as they're trying to get US audience. Rather different from a dedicated 24/7 channel like WSM.

I wish WSM had been kept, but *I* for one will be listening to the Blues....

COME ON CHELSEA!

You are 100% correct. My loss of WSM has fogged my vision!

Being an EPL fan, my question is this: are we going to get other EPL games (as Sirius is doing right now on a FAR too limited basis) or is it all-Chelsea-all-the-time? Being an Arsenal fan (though I don't mind Chelsea), I don't like the idea of not being given a broader coverage of the EPL....which is exactly what the press release seems to indicate. Is there really enough Chelsea support in the USA and Canada to support providing exclusive coverage of ONE EPL team? I don't think so. If it turns out that Chelsea is the ONLY EPL team being broadcast I, for one, will be more than a little pi$$ed.

Agreed. Sirius seems to have the "regular" feeds for other games still - hope they continue. Just having Chelsea's own feed (or even that from just a few Premiership teams) would ruin Premiership coverage for me - I enjoy the neutral commentators, and the score updates from the lower leagues.

Wankers.

Chelsea, despite being the best team in the EPL the last two seasons have very little drawing power next to the likes of Liverpool, MU and Arsenal....even Celtic and Rangers in that second rate SPL would garner much more interest.

I wish I had known about this last week. I for one will be tuning in to most games. Right now I get play-by-play updates online; this will be much better!
