Default Lazy Install

My buddy just got a Sirius. Instead of mounting the antenna and running the wires per the instruction, he just coiled up the antenna wire short and plops the antenna on the dash.

He gets great reception. Go figure.

Wait and see what happens when he's out of repeater range.

I have NO repeaters around me, with the same setup. Works fine.

Many people place their antennas on the dash and get perfectly acceptable reception.. For others, this method somehow doesn't work well... (I have no idea why)

I have antennas on the dash of both of my vehicles. I'm not near any repeaters. I have no issues with reception.

There's a thread about it here:

I have my car and my wife's car set up this same way. Antenna is on the dash and other than FM bleedover (her car only) they work great.

I yanked the antenna off my car so I get perfect reception everywhere.

I did the same thing, works fine. I had the antenna on my roof & it got baked over the summer. PIA to remove also, so this works better. I just used velcro to attach to the dash, so it doesn't slide around.

Yep, every install I've done has been a lazy install. Three or four of my own vehicles, changed the house install a couple of times. Only exceptions are I ran an antenna out of my wifes office window to the roof and a semi-truck I did for someone I ran the wire behind the trim and put it in an overhead compartment. In other words I do other peoples a little better than my own.

Post Lazy install

Installed my antenna under the dash on 2005 Ford F-150. I found out later it's same installation location as the factory uses. No problems at all!

Man I wish I knew this before I spent an hour running wire under moulding! I still have wires hanging out on my dash!

I first used it on the dash of a rental car in Florida and it worked great. I just got a new take home police car and decided to put it on the dash as well and it works great so far.

My dad put his antenna on the floor of his van for several months with no problems before he put it on the roof. I tried that and couldnt get anything. We live in the middle of backwoods kentucky. there are no repeaters even close to us. It irritated me for a while knowing that I struggled to get reception and hes had no problems.

Chances are, the cars where you can get reception with the antenna on the dash have larger windshields with more open area facing the sky. Either that or there are more repeaters in your area than you're aware of.

I tried putting the antenna on the dash in my semi, no luck. I tried putting it on the side of the sleeper's farring, no luck. I had to put mine on the leading edge of the farring to get reception. With my pick-up, I stuck it to my roof.

In my Sonoma I had it mounted UNDER the speaker grille in the corner of the dash....perfect reception.

Now lazy install....my friend just ran the wire out the door and plopped it on the roof of his truck. He got a new car so he gave the unit to his sister....and oh so kindly installed it, same method pretty much...except he was being stupid and put the antenna on the hood. No joke
