Default Newbie Here, A Few Questions

I received SIRIUS as a gift and have been trying to set it up. The first thing I notice is that, once I run the wires to connect the antenna and power on the unit, I am receiving what appears to be a strong signal (the "SAT" bar is full and the "TER" bar is empty, not sure what that indicates?).

When I tune my radio to the FM frequency that I selected, should I be able to hear anything at all? The SIRIUS unit says it's tuned to a weather channel or something like that, but all I hear is static and I do not notice a difference when the SIRIUS unit is on or off. I have tried changing the FM frequency and it's the same thing -- static. Someone told me that I won't receive any signal at all until the unit is activated, but the manual led me to believe that the weather/traffic report channel that it defaults to should at least be audible.

Can anyone confirm that?

Also, I continually get an error when I try to register online. Is it a hassle to register over the phone? That seems my only option at this point.

You should hear programming on 184, as long as your radio and tuner are set to the same frequency. To insure that you are choosing a clear channel (no pun intended) for the FM modulator, I recommend a site like www.fmfind.info

Registering via the phone is not usually a hassle, and it sounds like Sirius has staffed up for the holidays again this year.

The empty "TER" bar means you are not reciving a ground based repeater signal
Newer FM transmitters are not that good but, you should get something.

Channel 184 is the only station you can recive without activation.
In fact in order to recive the activation signal this station must be "ON"
Activating on the phone is easy but you save money online.

to Sirius Backstage

Here are a couple of long shots ....

Make sure your FM transmitter is turned ON. This is done through a menu selection.

Are you testing the FM transmitter in your car or in your house? If you have a newer Sirius unit, make sure your radio is fairly close to the Sirius receiver. It won't work across you your house. The new transmitters are pretty weak. If it's in your car, you should hear it.. It probably will have some static.

It's best to activate online.. It costs more (10 bucks I think) to do it by phone.

If you have a set of earphones with the little 1/8 plug, try plugging them into the AUDIO-OUT jack on the Sirius unit. You should be able to hear what the radio is picking up in the headphones. It won't be really loud, but you should hear something.

Which unit do you have?

Make sure that the FM transmitter is turned on.

Everything will be ok when you hear the sound coming from channel 184.

I believe the unit I have is the Starmate Replay ST2. I don't have it with me to check, but looking at the SIRIUS web site, that looks like the model that I have.

I would prefer not to have to take out my car stereo to install that way. Since I am not receiving any TER signal, is there anything else that I can do?

I have verified that the FM transmitter is on, and I am connecting the unit in my car. I ran the antenna cable as described in the manual (it is on the rear hood of my car). I will try a few of the other FM frequencies using the site posted in this thread.

I just wanted to clarify one thing that will hopefully clear up some confusion... The TER signal represents a signal from a terrestrial repeater, and has no relation to the FM transmitter that is built into your radio. These terrestrial repeaters are essentially land-based towers that are scattered about the country. They help provider a signal when your antennae cannot pick up a signal from a satellite. (For example, if you are in a parking garage or underground tunnel, you would probably not being able to get a satellite signal. If a terrestrial repeater was in your area, it would provide you with the signal.) In my area, we currently do not have a terrestrial repeater, so the TER signal on my receiver is always at "empty". As long as you have some bars in your SAT signal, you should be fine.

I would try jwt873's recommendation of plugging headphones into the audio out jack on your receiver. This will allow you to confirm that you are in fact picking up a signal. After that is confirmed, it should just be a matter of finding an unused FM frequency in your area to use the FM transmitter on. In my area, I've found that 88.1 - 88.9 work the best. Make sure that your FM transmitter is turned on (as you stated it was) and make sure that it is broadcasting to the channel you expect it to. I have one of the older Starmate Replays and, if I recall correctly, it allows you to set up five different FM frequencies that you can broadcast to. If this is the case with your receiver, make sure your car stereo is tuned to the correct frequency that your Starmate is broadcasting to.

Hopefully this information helps. You should be able to get this up and running without removing or replacing your current car stereo. That would only be necessary if you're not happy with the quality of sound that the FM transmitter provides once it is working.

You need either a satellite signal or a terrestrial signal, but you don't need both. Terrestrial signals are from repeaters that take a sat signal and "repeat" it to areas that may not have good sat reception - mostly large cities with tall buildings that may block the satellites. If you have good sat reception, don't worry about terrestrial.

Thanks for the replies. I am going to use the five recommended frequencies that I found on that FM frequency finder. The one I had been using was not listed there, so perhaps that is part of the problem.

I'm glad to hear that the TER signal is not a concern since I was seeing a full SAT signal, and I am also glad to read that I should not have to take out my car stereo!

I'll try everything tonight and see if I have any luck.

Just an update:

I was able to hear the default channel last night when I hooked up my unit and tried a few of the recommended FM frequencies.

Now, my only problem is getting my service activated. I have tried a dozen times to activate on the web site, but I keep getting a message that it cannot be processed at this time.

I tried calling the 888 # but was stuck on hold for awhile and then gave up. I suppose it's just because a lot of people are registering, but the fact that the web site seems to load smooth and fast and then gives me the error over and over is disconcerning -- plus, it evidently costs more to activate via the phone.

Bah!
