Default College football - Week 4

Tigers vs. Tigers this weekend in Alabama. Should me a much more competitive game than last week's top 10 match-up. ESPN will have the LSU/Auburn game in primetime Saturday night. I'll take the Bayou Bengals. Some other games to watch for...

-Florida @ Tennessee (the Vols come in unranked, but don't let that fool you. Should be a good game, but the Gators will pull away in the 4th.)

-Georgia @ Arizona St. (this one lost some of its luster after the Sun Devils choked last week vs. UNLV. ASU falls to 2-2.)

-East Carolina @ NC State (can the Pirates bounce back from a shaky performance last week and stay undefeated?)

-Wake Forest @ Florida St. (maybe the 2 best teams the ACC has to offer)

-Notre Dame @ Michigan St. (Spartans looking for some revenge after the last ND/MSU game that was in East Lansing - http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/recap?gameId=262660127)

The week got started last night with K-State losing at Louisville. There's another pretty good game on tonight with West Virginia traveling to Colorado to play the Buffaloes. WVU better be careful, or they'll be 1-2.

Yes indeed! LSU vs. Auburn. Definitely one to watch. Always a close, hard-fought game. The winner of the game usually takes the West. (I think Alabama is a year away from SEC title contention.)

I agree with you there. Nick Saban definitely has them going in the right direction, no doubt about it, but I think that win against Clemson to open the season was a bit of fool's gold. Not quite SEC elite yet, but the Tide will be soon enough.

I love those SEC night games. I thinks this will be a great weekend for football. Last weeks big game was a fraud. Oh yea I can't believe WVU got beat. That was some of the worst coaching and time managment I have ever seen. Good for Colorado! They always seem to knock of a team people say the shouldn't.

That was a good game last night, and congratulations to Colorado, but did they really have to rush the field after the game? Give me a break! They beat a 1-1, #21 ranked West Virginia team who was embarrassed in their last game by East Carolina...and Colorado was only a 2.5 point underdog! Rushing the field is much too common these days. It's gotten ridiculous.

Don't you feel the slightest bit happy for the Buffalo fans? I mean it's not like they haven't had much to cheer about since they had the one running back and won the national title, some 14 years ago or so...

Of course I’m happy for the Buffalo faithful…I said congratulations to them! Look, I’m happy anytime a Big XII team earns a solid win out of conference. But that’s all it was – a solid win. Nothing more. Nothing monumental about it, nothing shocking. Did it warrant the fans rushing the field? No way. Maybe I’m making too big a deal out of it, but this kind of thing happens all the time now. And it irks me. Actually, it annoys the shit outta me, I'm sorry! I just wish rushing the field was reserved for big time wins like it used to be. But young fans these days are really dopey and foolish (in general). They play fantasy sports and they think they have an intuitive knowledge of the game. I blame ESPN.

I must admit though, I did participate in a rushing of the field back in 2002 when we (Tech) beat Texas, number 3 at the time and on their way to a certain BCS bowl berth (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/recap?gameId=223202641). I was an 18 year old freshman at the time, and boy I hated that Chris Simms, cocky bastard. Best game I’ve ever been to. Somehow, after running around for a couple of minutes, I found myself right behind Lynn Swann and Mike Leach. I still don’t know how I got there. But I took full advantage, and apparently, I was on TV for about 2-3 minutes. To this day, I still haven’t seen the tape of it. And we haven’t beaten UT since…hopefully that changes this season.

Don't forget about Kordell Stewart...that guy was one of my favorites growing up. I loved the option in college football...too bad it's all but extinct these days. And, of course, the guy who made the catch, Michael Westbrook.

I'm just having fun. It's great to see kids go crazy over their school...

I really think Tech will have it's time, just like CU had theirs...

I agree about fans storming the field for way too many games.

Although... I've stormed the field twice. LSU vs. Tennessee, and LSU vs. Alabama. That was before the 2 BCS Championships. Now, Alabama would storm the field if they'd beat us. Haha.

Nick needs a hat...

If they had a four team playoff in A1, who would you put at your top four teams?

USC?
Florida?
Georgia?
BYU?...

That’s such a difficult question to answer, especially this early on in the season. But here are my thoughts.

Of course, I think you immediately have to put Texas Tech at the top of that list (just kidding).

But honestly…I picked Florida and USC before the season to play for the championship. I think they are the 2 best teams in the nation, and they haven’t shown anything thus far for me to change my opinion. So, I’ll put them at 1 and 2.

After that, there’s a handful of teams who you can legitimately round out the top 4 with…Georgia, Oklahoma, LSU, Missouri, even Alabama you can make a case for. I’m going to put in LSU after their win tonight against a top 10 Auburn team on the road. Plus, they’re the defending champs. I’m not completely sold on their QB situation, however, even though the Lee kid looked great for them tonight in the 2nd half. But LSU is in for me.

After that, I guess I’ll slot Georgia in. They’ve gone on the road to beat a stingy South Carolina team, and appear to be on their way to win big over a decent Arizona State team. For me, Oklahoma just narrowly misses the top 4…I need to see them play stiffer competition. But if you want to put them in, I really can’t argue with you. Missouri, I’m not in love with their defense. We all know the offense is not a problem. Alabama…I think they’re still a year away from being elite. Although, they do have the opportunity to prove me wrong next week when they travel to Athens.

So, to sum up (sorry I rambled on and on), my top 4 is…

1. Florida
2. USC
3. LSU
4. Georgia

Auburn came with their A game tonight. Wasn't enough to beat LSU, though. Good Job by the LSU Tigers...

Unless one of the other teams ahead of them lose, LSU might only be able to clime as high as 5 unless they can play and beat Florida in the SEC Championship game...

I still want to see USC and LSU play for the championship. That would be a great game...
