Default Slacker G2

We first heard about Slacker through a reader with an odd connection to the company, which was founded by three heavy hitters from the Web 1.0 days: former iRiver president Jonathan Sasse, former Rio CEO Jim Cady and MusicMatch founder Dennis Mudd, who sold it to Yahoo for $160 million.

The company's customized and programmable radio stations feature a healthy catalog of over two million songs that the company licenses directly from labels and publishers without putting up with SoundExchange's government-mandated royalty rates.

It's essentially a portable version of Pandora, albeit one with a few different station creation options (for example, you can designate both songs and artists to be played on one of your customized channels). Plus, you can fine tune each channel so that it adds a varying amount of music from artists you didn't specify, in order to facilitate music discovery or a DJ that interjects with facts about the artists your listening to. You can also use some of the device's storage for MP3s, WMAs and AACs from your computer.

You can try Slacker out for free via the web or the company's PC software (we prefer the web version, which can be accessible from both our Windows and Mac machines). Of course, you can load your own MP3s, WMAs and AACs onto the device If you're ready to take the leap to a hardware version of the service, you can pick up the 4GB (25 channel) model for $200 or the 8GB (40 channel) model for $250.

This really does look nice and if I didn't already have an iPod Touch with Pandora, LastFM and AOL radio available via Wifi I might would consider it.

The plus to this player of course is its ability to store the channels for playback at anytime, so not having Wifi isn't an issue, though you do need wifi or USB cable connected to a PC to keep it fresh.

Looks better than the first generation player. Most people said the first Slacker felt plastic and cheap.

I may jump on it if the post-merger programming gets too bad. I mainly listen at work, where I can't use WiFi.

I've seen a picture of the G1 and G2 next to each

This is a nice player, my hat is off to Slacker.

Unfortunately, Slacker doesn't stand much of a chance. The truth is probably less than 1-3% of the population has heard of Slacker (maybe by a bit). Now it doesn't seem like it if you follow satellite radio or the online music industry closely, you would think a lot of people follow it in this little world here. But outside of the fanatics, no one really knows about it. One of the issues being that it isn't in retail but even so I would have to bet that Slacker could not make it. Perhaps it's just too ahead of its time.

It's unfortunate because the service is pretty good, but it's the truth I think.

Default G2 Rocks

I have been using my G2 for 3 days and it is working flawlessly. I am canceling my sirius today. Much better sound quality.
