Default Commercial Free FM Radio?

Commercial Free Music is definitely a huge draw for people to satellite radio.

Now it looks like FM radio may be trying to respond to satellite radio's commercia free music.

Do they really have a chance to compete with 100% commerical free music 24/7? No.

Do you think they really want to give up commercial time? No. They want money!

This just helps illustrate why satellite radio is going to be huge.

Here are a few examples of FM stations starting to have special Commercial Free Hours every week....

Z100 New York:
Weekdays - Commercial Free Hours - Noon, 5p, 8p
Weekends - Commercial Free Hours - Saturday, Noon & 3p; Sunday, 1p & 3p

Star 94 San Diego:
Star Music - 90 Minutes, Commercial FREE!
Monday through Friday, from 10 am to 11:30 am

Indie 103.1 Los Angeles:
Commercial Free Every Monday

A whole 8 songs without 10 minutes of commercials? HA!

We have FMs here that advertise "no repeat workdays" and "1000 song weekends" and "no commercial saturday nights". Big deal. They make up for it with more commercials during the other times. I had the misfortune of having to listen to FM at work when the internet was down. Wow! Ten minutes and it was OFF. I cant believe all the commercials, contests, etc. Seems like every morning all FM channels have a group of DJs that think they are funny and would rather talk about their personal lives then play music.

Even if FM goes "almost" commercial free, it will lack the diversity of music we can get on Sirius. It might slow down new customers from jumping on the Satellite Radio bandwagon, but I doubt it will make anyone drop Sirius and go back to FM.

What?? I already cancelled my Sirius subscription because I saw an ad in the newspaper that told me if I put this bumper sticker on my car, I could win $100!!! That Sirius window decal won't do that!

Do those FM stations also turn off their loud boomy audio processors during their commercial free moments and stop yelling at their listeners about how they always play the best music & the most music?

Was it a commercial?probably-
2. Next - shut that crap off and turn the "dog" back on .

Since Z100 has returned to streaming over the web, I thought I'd revisit an old friend, with a pair of objective listening ears.

I still do love the music, but the amount of morning show bits they play in a day is just a tad bit too much. Rather than play a snapshot, they play a WHOLE segment. I haven't really heard that many commercials, not as much as I recall from the past. But then again, commercials are probably lumped into the biggest listening periods - morning, afternoon. The biggest adverstisements, thus far, that I've had to endure are for giveaways, like the "100 Days Of Summer". Then again, Sirius loves to toot its own horn when it comes to giveways, so that's an even playing field right there. As for the DJ's yelling, that's all personality. I mean, Spyder Harrison from Sirius Hits 1 and Shelley Wade from Z100 seem rather tame. However, Jason Drew from Sirius Hits 1 and Romeo from Z100 can, from time to time, get on my very last nerve. Personality will dictate how annoying or over-the-top each person is.

Still, in the end, Sirius will prevail...thanks to commercial free. Z100, on the other hand, is a nice break that I enjoy surfing over from time to time, just for something different.

*light comes on*

I just realized something - since there are restrictions for broadcasting out of market commercials over the internet, it would make sense as to why there are soooooooo many morning show bits. Instead of commercials, the system just inserts morning show bits instead of commercials for the webcast. Clever! Years before, when they streamed online, they would just insert national spots. This is actually better, morning show bits over commercials.

That still doesn't explain why, from time to time, I hear 5 minutes of actual local commercials. Ah well, nothing's perfect.
