XM and Napster Team Up To Sell Music on the Web

July 28, 2005; Page D2

XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. and Napster are partnering to make Napster online music purchases easily available to people who subscribe to XM's radio service.

XM, a Washington satellite-radio operator, said subscribers who buy a new combination XM radio receiver and digital-audio player, to be made by Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. and available before the holidays, will have the ability to "bookmark" songs they like on their XM receivers.

The next time they hook the player up to a computer, the Napster service will flag the songs so listeners can buy them if they like.

Even if they don't buy them, the songs will remain on the XM receiver in MP3 format. If listeners want to play the songs on any other device, they must buy them.

Live XM radio on the new devices will come in only when the receiver is docked in a home or car port. Otherwise, it will be able to play several hundred hours of radio prerecorded by the listener, or MP3s. The device is a likely precursor to a fully portable XM radio that plays MP3s.

XM offers a fully portable player without MP3 functions called the MyFi. A spokesman says the new devices that incorporate MP3 aren't meant to replace the MyFi. Prices for the new device aren't available yet. The player will come in two models -- one with enough capacity to hold 50 hours of XM songs and MP3s, and one with 25 hours' capacity.

XM subscribers without the new combination radio and MP3 player can still use Los Angeles-based Napster's dedicated service for XM while listening online.

They certainly are keeping Sirius's feet to the fire with their technology.
