Default XM Satellite Radio to Stream Music Over Cingular Handsets

WASHINGTON (AP) -- XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc., a provider of satellite radio, and Cingular Wireless LLC, a wireless carrier with more than 58 million customers, announced a partnership Thursday to stream 25 XM music channels to Cingular handsets.
Beginning Nov. 6, Cingular Wireless customers will be able listen to a variety of XMs popular commercial-free music channels through the XM Radio Mobile service.

Audio streams of 25 commercial-free XM music channels will be available to Cingular customers.

XM will deliver data to make it possible to view the song title, artist and album while listening on a variety of compatible handsets.

Question

What happened to there agreement with Alltel? They had a thing going with Alltel for $7.99/mo. I wasn't going to do that, but my girlfriend might have. She like some of the XM Music Channels, and I plan on canceling my XM subs come next month.

I dont think these alliances are exclusive are they? Like XM could have cingular, verizon and alltel and Sirius could have Sprint, Nextel and T mobile. Im not sure but thats what I thought.

Hold on now. Nextel has already gave into cell phone trends enough. I'm proud to say they were the last cell phone provider to come out with a camera phone, I hope they never ever do streaming audio or video. I prefer to have my cell phone provider focused on being a..well..cell phone provider. Not a jack of all traits master of none.

Cell phones were made to talk on. Not listen to satellite radio on (or take lousy low rez pictures on for that matter). Besides $7.99 isn’t that attractive. For $5 more you can have the entire service.

Bonus! I guess that's great for those Alltel customers that want it...

To each his own, and you've got to consider the cost of portable equipment. How much is a Stilleto, $350?

Exactly! Why buy another device when you can get the service on a device you already own. MultiFunction cellphones are the here and now and in the future.

I guess if all you want are these specific 25 music channels being offered it makes sense, otherwise it is a NO GO! I also think the cost is almost as bad as SIRIUS charging $12.95 for the premiums online SIR service. These type devices remind me of the term, jack of all trades and master of none! The do many things, but don't do any of them very well.

You just reminded me of how it's only 25 channels. That is the reason why I have not subscribed to Sirius on my Sprint phone, very limited channels.

I was never impressed with the Sprint/SIRIUS deal either for the exact reason stated in my previous post.
