Default Finally took some pictures of a sirius interference causing antenna

Ive complained before about a spot in Atlanta on I-85 where there are a couple of antennas shooting RF all across the highway. My Audiovox PNP3 drops out at least 3 times when I drive through the area between these antennas. These pictures show the north antenna facing south on the east side of I-85. I was driving on Buford Hwy SR13 which parallels I-85 where these antennas are. There is another antenna a little bit more south on the west side of the highway. Anybody else in Atlanta get interference here?

Drove past there on I-85 twice yesterday. No dropout either time. What antenna and radio do you have?

Maybe i'm uneducated, naive or am missing the obvious here, but those look like cameras to me.

Yes those are obviously traffic cameras but maybe they're transmitting their output wirelessly, causing interference.

Down below the little box on the back of the pole is a little yagi that is usually used for a fixed point-to-point sort of thing. It probably feeds the video images to a monitoring or control center (i.e. Dept. of Transportation, Metro Traffic, etc.)

But, based on what's on that pole, there should be no problems unless the frequency of the point-to-point link is somewhere near the Sirius frequency and is just enough to cause a blip on your radio. But what you see is probably not the source of the problem.

EDIT: Antennas such as these are usually highly directional, and could also be used to receive control messages such as camera pan, tilt and zoom.

Default Interference

Traffic cameras usually feed back their video one of 2 ways (depending on who owns the camera). Either internet or microwave. If it is microwave, this frequency would lie close to the Sirius repeaters which could cause the dropouts.

I have dropouts all the time on 2 of our major bridges here in Tampa. I have full line-of-site of the 50+ story building that the repeater is on, with a 10 bar terr signal, but I still get the dropouts. I'm almost positive it is microwave transmitters that kill the signal.

I drive down your way 4 nights a week but I get off at Pleasantdale Road. I haven't really had any problems with dropouts down there, fortunately.

Exclamation

Get a new radio.

I have had first, second, and third generation radios. All of the first and second generation radios cut-out when driving on busy interstate highways with those wireless traffic cameras on poles. The radio you are using is not selective enough and its being drowned out by the strong (yet directional) local signal coming from that antenna.

I drive Interstate 66 here in Virginia and this area is wide-open sky and also has many local repeaters. Only the Sportster4 and Stratus will hold a signal on this road. The Starmate-ST1, JVC PNP, and even the newer Kenwood H2EV always lose the Sirius signal on I-66.

FWIW, the drop out also occurs on XM units and its only really bad going towards downtown, if you are Northbound its either doesn't occur or is very brief that you may not notice it. I really doubt that a new radio will fix it.

I can deal with that part, but its an annoyance. What I can't stand however is that the signal on i-285 around the Dunwoody area is basically crap now. The area is kind of in a small bowl, and the high amount of buildings (HP, Homebanc) trees over the interchange and overpasses at spaghetti junction doesn't help. Its virtually nothing but repeater there. There used to be a repeater almost directly over 285 in that area but its been out of commission since the FCC complaints a few months ago. they really need it back as its almost unbearable.

We have those same "towers" on I-85 in Greenville, SC. I drive past them every day with no drops in service.
