Default Advice Wanted: DirecTV HD Receiver

My old TV died, and I replaced it with an LCD HDTV, 32", with two sets of component inputs, an S-VHS input, a standard AV input, and an HDMI input.

My current DirecTV receiver (an RCA brand with optical out and component outs) looks like crap, now. I want a DirecTV HD receiver before the playoffs (NFL), so I have a little time to shop and compare.

It seems like all the non DirecTV brand receivers are pricey. The DirecTV brand receivers are low priced, but how's the picture?

Any suggestions?

What HD channels do you get now on DIRECTV? Do your local stations come from Albuquerque? It looks like 4th Quarter DIRECTV has announced that local Albuquerque stations will be available, in HD, to customers in this DMA.

It requires, though, the new HD20 (MPEG-4) HD receivers so if you're looking to upgrade anyway, that might make up your mind:

Thanks for the info, xzi. It looks like I'm not on that list. My stations are broadcast out of El Paso, TX and Las Cruces, NM. They're not even on the list.

Frankly, for the HD channels I can get, it doesn't seem worth it.

Maybe next year.

That sounds right then, if you're not on one of the list for the new HD channels then there isn't much incentive to upgrade just yet since that's all the new HD receivers will get you anyway is HD locals.

Can you get the (network) stations you watch over the air? If so a Directv HD reciever should be able to pull the digital OTA signal, since most stations broadcast digital HD over the air. You need a HD reciever to get them. Since I live so far away from Nashville I got a waiver that allows me to recieve the New York HD networks. Although I can also pull in the HD OTA channels from Huntsville Alabama. If you live far away from your OTA channels you should be able to get a waiver to recieve the LA HD networks. So I get ABC,NBC,FOX,and CBS in HD from New York, I get ABC,FOX, CBS, NBC, and PBS OTA in HD. I also get ESPN,ESPN2,TNT,UHD,HDN,HDNM,HBO, and Showtime in HD on DTV.

And yes, the picture is stunning. DTV makes their money on subscriptions, not on the box itself. Football in HD widescreen freaking rocks! Most college games are in HD too.

To tell the truth, blyons, I hadn't even tried yet.

Las Cruces is over 40 miles from El Paso. I am doubtful that the increased HD bandwidth of an OTA broadcast could make it. But, I guess it's worth a try.

I have a project for the weekend, now!

Default Free HD Receiver

Just an FYI -

It looks as though both Best Buy and Circuit City will be offering a free (after rebate & 12 month HD commitment) DirecTV H20 for both new and exisiting cutomers... I think generally it's only for new. The H20 is the newest DirecTV model, but judging by some of the posts I've seen, it's less reliable than the H10 that preceeded it. In any case, it's more-or-less free, so there isn't much harm.

That jives with what DirecTV is offering directly, except that DTV's rebate is instant, but the commitment is 2 years.

I'll probably make a decision after this weekend. No rush.

If you already have DTV and you've been a customer for awhile, call and tell them you want a deal on the new HD dual tuner DVR. Tell them that your local cable operator is offering you a free DVR to switch to their service. They will likely cut the price by $100. If you have had DTV long enough (8 years for me), tell them it's not good enough and repeat that your local cable operator is offering it to you for free. You will when get bumped to the next level. At that level, I got $150 off, plus $10/month off for next 12 months -- I ended up paying $30 for the unit (plus shipping/handling). Unfortunately, they had to send it with a technician to install it, even though I already had the correct dish. All he did was swap out the receiver.

It works well and the picture is stunning.
