Default An XM Review from a 2 Year Sirius Sub

So, I've had Sirius for 2 years after having XM for a short period of time. Until recently, I never even thought about signing up for XM. They hooked me by offering 3 months for $4.99 each (although later I found a code for 3 months FREE *cough*XMSCION03*cough*).

I haven't gotten to listen to every XM channel so I can't make a lot of comparisons but here ya go...

Music Programming:
Sirius has good music, XM has better music. I mainly listen to hit channels when not listening to Stern, and XM offers a much wider variety than Sirius. I was dissapointed at first that 20 on 20 changed it's format, but I think it's fine. Flight 26, Hit List, and even the commercialized KISS are good channels. Cinemagic is one of my favorite XM channels, the way it is formatted and the quality of music is great. Why Sirius doesn't have one is beyond me. I also found Ethel to be a really good channel. I haven't listened to the others enough to give a decent review.

A note on Holiday programming: Sirius needs to take a look at what XM is doing, 6 dedicated channels plus integration into others, very nice!

Negatives of XM music programming: No Super Shuffle type channel, no BBC Radio 1, no Margaritaville.

Sound Quality:
It's a very very slight difference but I think Sirius wins here, they're different sounding though (sorry, don't know how to describe it).

Talk:
XM doesn't have Howard Stern... Sirius wins.

Sports:
Not a big sports fan, but Sirius has more of what I'd ever listen to.

So, will I re-sign up for XM? Still not sure.

I think as to which service has better music sort of depends on your taste. I tend to go back and fourth between them. There are days and weeks that I feel SIRIUS is better, then there are days and weeks I just enjoy the heck of out XM and feel they are better. I like the bigger variety on XM, but then sometimes I like knowing what I am going to hear will be something I know and enjoy too.

Personally I think the only way to go is to have both. I've had both since November 2002 and while there are things about both I like and dislike. I very much so enjoy both of them.

I had xm for 3mo and I was very happy being a duel sub. The main reason I cancelled is the music. It seemed they were broadcasting in a vacum. I enjoy the dj's at sirius and xm was like an ipod (imo)
I realize this is the reason some folks like xm...no dj's...but for me it was a minus...so much so it affected the music. Also besides airamerica the talk channels did not appeal to me. I really would like to try xm again in the future...

It's funny you should say that, that was one of the only things that bugged me about XM, but I've noticed lately, some more personalities showing up. Maybe they are getting the hint?

I have both, and I go in stages. I almost always listen to XM at work though, more because of the larger playlists. While driving, my son prefers Alt nation, and I've been kind of listening to the Blend, and Flight26 on XM lately. And the heart. (Shut up, I'm going through a weird relationship thing right now!)

I REALLY wish Sirius had done a SpecialXmas time channel though, I enjoy that alot.

I have 3 XM subs now and 1 Sirius, it used to be all Sirius for me. No more.
I'm about to get rid of my last Sirius with no regrets.

I got satelite for music, and XM is all about the music. I like the deeper cuts, and they have it. I like the country, they have it (and alt country too!), lots of jazz selections and deep tracks is awesome !!

XM knows what its like to be creative too, and yes they do have DJ, and lots of them.

They also have Dylan, Tom Petty, and believe it or not Oprah and Friends is really interesting stuff. From health to finance info, I never thought I'd listen to Oprah Channel but find it on all the time.

Sirius was once my favorite but after the big channel dump 9-29-05, I gave up on them. All I do is surf channels and always end up shutting if off and switching over to XM. I expect to dump my last Sirius Sub by the end of 2006.

The management over at Sirius is clueless and they DON'T GIVE A RATS ASS WHAT THEIR LISTENERS HAVE TO SAY.

Dude.... Your NAME is WBCN?! LOVE IT... Memories of a once great channel...

It's funny you should say that, because I found I surf LESS with Sirius than I do with XM. But, like I said, my mood lately has had me listening to the Heart, so XM has been the standby, since I don't dig sirius love that much....

And I DO believe Sirius listens to it's listeners, but by majority... I'm pretty sure they don't go "Well, STEVE thinks we should do this...." More like, "73% think we should do THIS". And I KNOW my listening pleasure isn't the 'NORM'.

I have 3 sirius receivers, and 2 XM. 1 XM Roady in the car, XM Myfi in my truck, 1 Sirius in the truck, one in a boombox, and one attached to the stereo...

Steve

So basically what you are saying is that based on your personal preference that XM offers you more of what you want. However, clearly that isn't the case for everyone.

I don't think SIRIUS management is totally clueless, though they have made their lion share of bad decisions. But the real deal is you could say that on both sides they have made some pretty poor decisions.

There are those that will find XM is better than SIRIUS, those that find SIRIUS better than XM and then you have many that actually like both services, but no matter what it is based on individual preference. To do anything else would be to lay ones on preference on others.

Both are great, I have had both and I enjoyed both. Sirius fits me better, I enjoy the music more on Sirius.

SISO glad that you are enjoying XM.

I signed up for XM 6 months ago and just cancelled. I found myself constantly surfing XM's music channels looking for anything I liked. Eventually, I settled mostly on just 3 channels: the two classical channels and the real jazz channel. XM had way too much Christmas music; not just the dedicated channels, but on every other music channel as well.

I expeced I'd listen to XM's Cinemagic and broadway channels, but they never had anything good.

I started out listening to XM's comedy channels a lot, but got tired of them quickly. The "clean" channel is definitely stuck in the 60s. The Canadian channel took a nosedive with the introduction of its boring morning show, and the National Lampoon channel just plain sucks.

XM is schizophrenic. A lot of the time they want to be a jukebox type of service, and I can live with that. But sometimes they go all yakky and after wall to wall music the talk talk talk is intrusive and unwanted.

The one word that keeps coming to mind to describe XM's programming is "pretentious". I was bored to death with it.

I've had Sirius for a month now and there's more on Sirius that I like than was ever on XM. Shuffle, Disorder, broadway, classical, jazz, comedy, CBC, etc, etc. Sirius seems to be programmed like the radio programs I would listen to back when there was something good on the radio (like, before the rise of Clear Channel). XM sounds like it's programmed by Clear Channel.

I don't know if XM "trained" my ears, but I used to get actual fatigue from the sound quality on XM. I had to create a special equalizer setting on my car radio for XM. Sirius' sound isn't perfect, and they have good days and bad days, but I find Sirius' sound more pleasant overall than XM's and no special eq is needed.

i've had XM for a coule of years. I had sirius first, I think I got my first sub with the kenwood here2anywhere back in 03. I prefer sirius. I got the XM because of the myfi, it was really the appeal of the gadget more then anything. I like top tracks and big tracks, flight 26. I used to listen to XM22 the mix, before the comercials. Cinemagic is also fun to listen to sometimes.

XM seems to focus more on new music, garage, indie, unsigned type music. Sirius does a better job with the classic rock and the decades. Listening to totally 70's is like going back to the 70's. The DJ's the music, it's like going back in time to my teen years. it's cool. Basically, i think older folks would enjoy Sirius whereas XM has more for the younger croud. That's my opinion.

I bought a stiletto 100 when they first came out. I plan to get an S10 for the wife, she currently uses the Myfi. When I do, i'll gas the XM sub. One consideration is tourning on the motorcycles. The portable radio with a workaround antenna works out well when we're on the bikes.

I find I surf channels much more on xm then siriius.

basically, i will listen to music on sirius that i wouldnt tolerate on xm -- on xm, i will just change to another channel and find something i like better on another channel.

on sirius, i dont really expect to find anything better and so i am more likely to stay where i am.

it is a funny comparison - but if i hear a burned out song or something i dont care to listen to on xm i will move on every time-- but on siri i may just listen to it anyway. sort of unusual i guess.

never really thought of that till this thread though.

Thumbs up Sirius vs. XM

I have a My-fi that I purchased a little over a year ago and I had to switch to Sirius for NASCAR broadcasts. I'm new to Sirius but I can say a few things I have noticed. First, the Sirius sound is superior. I turned on the Stiletto 100 and I could not beleve the sound. I used the same antenna from my XM radio and the same casette adapter so it was an "apples to apples" comparison. Second, while the Stiletto is a cool radio it is not as sturdy as the my-fi but it is OK.
XM does have good music programming that I enjoyed very much. So far I have not been able to turn away from the Rolling Stones channel on Sirius even though I heard it is going away soon. The 80's channel seems to be pretty good too and I can't wait for NASCAR!

The SQ debate will always be there -- but for an apples to apples comparison, an Inno to the Stiletto would have been better -- I think, but could be wrong, that the Inno's innards are more up to date than the MyFi's and may have better SQ than the MyFi -- in the end, there will always be those who prefer the SQ of one over the other.

I think the sirius SQ on all of my sirius receivers is better then my MYFi. I've read the threads, seems like most people think the XM SQ is better and their transmission technology is better but I can't hear it. Perhaps it is the myfi.
