I have a kenwood unit with the USB dongle coming from the back. It plays everything I have ever thrown at it.

I have tried:

USB WD Passport 60GB
4GB USB thumb drive
SD card connected to a USB adapter.

The Kenwoods are awesome for USB support.

The navigation on the kenwoods is lightning fast. They really got the mp3 playing down to an art in their newer models it seems.

The units will also auto resume playback where you left off.... Even if you change from USB to Aux or Radio. When you go back to USB the song you were in the middle of picks right back up.

I have one of those Kenwood's as well. It wasn't even that expnsive, and it is also Sirius and HD radio ready. It is great, it works really well off the thumbdrive at least. Haven't tried a portable hard drive yet.

I have a KDC X890 it is awesome. I have a 200gb external USB drive on it and it works great. The key is properly organizing the files and folders.

There are some 2.5" USB hard drives out there that can be powered off the USB hub....does anyone know if the Kenwood HUs (or any USB HU for that matter) puts out enough power on the USB port to power one of these? If not, what's the best way to get power to a hard drive? Thanks

Sorry I did not respond sooner. I did not see your questions. I love the unit it sounds great has a good but not too intuitive menu system and has more sound config options than I could ever need.

I don't have the HD radio add in box, it is compatible. I used to have the Sirius add in but missed the features that my Here 2 Everywhere provided. Now I have an S50.

The drive has about 120 gb of songs on it.

It does not have Bluetooth.

wouldn't you need external power with something like the ibook?
it seems like most people would want something totally powered by the usb port.

Yep, has to be FAT, not NTFS.

Anything other than FAT would not be very portable between systems.
