Exactly...

XM and Tivo have similiar F&F offers. It's a great way for people who are sitting on the fence, or who are hesitant to lay out the cash to "buy in". At this point, ANYthing that Sirius can do to up the magic number (subscriber base) is good news for all parties.

Take me for instance, I recently sold my XM Delphi SkyFi and cancelled my account because of (what I consider to be) VASTLY better content on Sirius. I could have avoided all of this hassle had Sirius been on better footing from the beginning (customer service, financials, etc...) Naturally, I went with what was (and still is in many people's minds) the the more stable, solid service....so before you start a "not for the whole internet community"....

Just be thankful that people like us (the entire "damn internet community") are willing to commit and overlook Sirius obvious shortcomings and give it a chance.

I first read about the Sirius F&F deal on DBSForums, and wandered over here to take advantage. When I found out it was expired, I actually posted over there that whichever company came back with free (or drastically reduced-price) equipment would be the company I chose*. Sirius came through first with this current F&F promo, so now I'm a Sirius subscriber. I've also been championing the service to everyone I know, which I wouldn't have done without the offer.

(* Yes, I'm aware of XM's Delphi F&F promotion. However, that would have still required me to pay $99 up front and still buy a FM modulator, which Sirius did not require and provided free, respectively)

Simply put, I didn't have the $200+ to buy the equipment I just got for free, and was willing to exchange a year commitment and the install costs (which wound up being free as well, since I did it myself) to get the up-front cost handled for me. Obviously, Sirius felt that was a good trade as well, or they wouldn't have made the offer.

This is also overlooking the fact that if Sirius wanted to, they could have locked this promotion down tight. Being told to make all F&F referrals through the actual employee would have nicely solved the "problem" of the "whole damn Internet community" getting in on the deal, yet would still have been a friends and family offer. Instead, Sirius decided to let it go out to whomever wanted it, and, thus, picked up a lot of subscribers to boot. I'm certain we're being served through excess inventory, as the message mentions the hardware IS limited; getting rid of excess inventory by signing up customers can't be a bad thing. Sirius is gambling I will stay a subscriber long enough to pay them back for their generosity and, as of right now, I can say that's one gamble they're winning.

Nicely put wesmills. Sirius is seeding the word-of-mouth network.

Sirius will win with grassroots positive buzz resulting from deals like this.

It's win-win-win for everyone.

Sirius is using the same market strategy as the mobile phone companies have been doing for years and it works. As long as they keep the churn low they will win in the long run. The whole key here is just to make sure they keep all the new customers they have happy. They are taking a loss up front and hoping to recoup it later and after the hardware is paid turn a profit on the F&F customers, its sound business and it benefits us all. I was waiting for one of the sat radio companies to do this and Sirius was first and so here I am. I got my package on thursday and I will be having it installed next week.

My install only took me an hour. 2001 vw jetta. Of course I didn't have to remove the radio as I wired it up through the CD-changer adaptor.

Does anyone have a count on how many units have been shipped out under the May F&F deal?

I think the last F&F deal generated about 200 requests.... I was one of them.

Why the audiovox over the Jensen?

Jensen is known to have quality issues. Also, their parent company recently filed for bankruptcy protection.

The Audiovox also have a very nice controller/display.

I must ask, are you new to this site? We have alot of new members today, just curious where they came from.

Thanks Josh, that's what I expected.

Anyway, welcome to everyone here for the free hardware. Feel free to take part in the deal. You can't beat getting $250 worth of Sirius hardware for nothing.

Hope everyone sticks around.

Nicholas,
You get everything you need in the box...tuner, FM-mod, antenna and controller.

If your radio has AUX input, you can use the RCA outs on the tuner, if not the FM-mod is your next best option.

Default Install / Acitvation order

Does the unit have to be installed before it can be activated? I wouldn't have time to get it installed by the 16th.

You can activate it by the 16th and install it whenever you get time. You will just have to call customer care once you have it installed to request another activation hit.
