SIRIUS Satellite Radio to Add Replay to Sportster Receiver

NEW YORK and LAS VEGAS, Jan 06, 2005 -- SIRIUS Satellite Radio today announced at the Consumer Electronics Show that it will add an instant replay feature to its number #1 selling transportable "Plug & Play" radio - the Sportster.

The redesigned Sportster IR will be capable of recording up to 44 minutes of programming simultaneously while a subscriber is listening to SIRIUS, enabling the listener to pause the unit, to take a phone call for example, and return to where the programming left off.

"The popularity of the Sportster makes it the ideal SIRIUS "Plug & Play" to introduce this exciting new feature," said Larry Pesce, Senior Vice President of Product Management and Strategic Planning for SIRIUS. "We believe that subscribers will appreciate, and utilize, this new capability in order to not miss out on their favorite programming, no matter what the interruption."

The new Sportster IR will utilize a simple 3-button feature to pause, jump forward and jump back, and will also include a built-in FM modulator that permits wireless connectivity to any vehicle radio over as many as 100 unused channels.

Incorporating a new, sleek design, the Sportster IR is compatible with existing SIRIUS Sportster boom boxes, car and home kits. SIRIUS expects that the new unit will begin shipping to retail stores in the middle of this year. Pricing will be announced at a later date.

Here were the key points from the conference:

* New, sleeker form
* 44 Minute Recording Capabiliity
* True FF/REW capabilities
* Ability to pause live radio (ala Tivo)

44 minutes seems odd. Why don't they just go ahead and say 45?

I guess their lawyer sitting beside them advised them to say 44 minutes.

Great! I just got my PNP3 and now a SkyFi2-like receiver comes out. With my luck it'll be instantly available too, like the Starmate.

Good! The SkyFi2's "FF" (to the next text change) feature sucks for talk programming...

I don't think it will be available until later on in the year, maybe during the summer. You could always sell your PNP3 on eBay, or return it.

I'll feel better if it doesn't come out for a while. No offense to those of you eagerly awaiting it of course. And I do love my PNP3, so it's not a big deal. Just "newest technology" fever.

Good news indeed...the Big Dog doesn't lie.

I personally was hoping for something with a larger recording capability, say 3 - 4 hours.

You'll get the 3-4 hours with the Xact ReGO that was also recently announced. And MP3 capability.. And upgradeable via memory cards (SD)
