For someone who is such an XM fan you sure do spend an inordinate amount of time on the sirius fan site?? Lets take a closer look at the two 'portable' product lines...

smaller size (about 1/3 the size of XM's offering)
display color TFT for Sirius monochrome LCD for XM
Record time 50 hours for Sirius 5 hours for XM
MP3 WMA ready Sirius yes Xm no...
and the list goes on...
the only thing going for XM in this comparison is the live content while undocked which in my experience (I actually used one for a few days) basically sucks unless you are near a repeater. You were right about one thing though... the gap is widening... you were just a little mixed up about which gap!

Is Portable Live Content so important?

Record like 8 hours of Stern and listen to that. That's not something that needs to be live. Just sports. And all local sports are on regular radio...

I just wanna know how many MP3s I can save in there? And what type of case there will be?

How big is the screen size?

SIRIUS made a nice thing, it looks like...

SIRIUS Satellite Radio To Introduce Traffic Data Services

Will traffic maps show up on this new device's screen?

This tuner looks great! I hope this is just the beginning of new products. I see that it's not going to be easy deciding which new tuner will be my next.

Looks like its the size of a Pre-flip-phone cell phone, only a little fatter. Or think of it this way, Sirius probably pitched this to Apple and Apple said no thanks (stooopid) so what you are looking at is the iPod of Satradio.

50 hours! I wonder what quality it records at and what type of memory car or hard drive its writting, too.

I like the new device. I been wanting a portable device. Cool part records up to 50 hours. So if I miss Howard Stern. I will just recorded the whole show. So that on my "whish list", I need to start saving up for it for it unless somthing better might come out?

One question does it have a built in antenna or do you have to wear the
antenna like the ReGo?

Neither. There is no live satellite radio out of the cradles from what everyone has been able to tell.

Wallstreet Journal article says that it has to be docked in order to listen to live content. Hence, the reason they went for the 50 hours of content.

Has anyone who has the MyFi tried to use it portable mode - what kind of reception do you get? I guess if you are wearing the antenna on your head it would be pretty good but what does the field say?

OK so its not exactly like the MyFi.

I bet a 512meg memory chip would just about do it. I record 3 hours of Stern every day and it converts to a little over 30megs of MP3. If they slapped a 1gig card in there that should be plenty for audio and any graphics they throw on there.

Let me get this right? So when you are out in the open. It won't play live satellite stuff. Just record 50 hours of stuff, when you are out and about?

The only time you will get live satellite reception is with the radio in a dock. Out of a cradle, it will act like an mp3 player.

Sorry for replying to myself but there is no edit feature in the blog space. Also, why is SBS so freaking slow today?

Here is the URL for the Journal Article:
Sirius Unveils Portable Player
It confirms the live content is only received when docked - probably means no built in antenna.
Quote:
The S50, which includes a color display, is about the size of a deck of cards and less than one inch thick. The device must be connected to a car or home docking station to receive live Sirius programming.

The device is slated to go on sale in October at a suggested retail price of $359.99, the company said. It will include a car dock, a six-hour rechargeable battery, ear buds and other accessories. A home dock, which connects the radio to speakers or a computer, will cost an additional $99.99.
Also, tack on another $100 smackeroos for the home dock. Pretty pricey for recorded portability.

Granted, if it can record one channel while you are listening to another then who cares?

Great thing about this is you can record howard all morning and listen on the way home. Will it let you FFW through commercials?

Can't wait to see it up close and personal. Will they have headphones with an antenna like XM does for its "2go" radios?

My guess is that its probably a 1 gig flash card or even a mini-drive. I wouldn't doubt its the drive. They probably went to Apple and said, look what we built, wanna install iTunes on it for co-branding? Jobs probably said, if we don't build it it doesn't get to be Apple. Of course, I bet there was something included in there about transferability of recorded content. One can only speculate the complications.

I hope they make a headphone antenna unit for this. So when you are outside, you can get live feed!

Why can't we edit our stuff in the Blogs thread?
