Umm, is this right? I can NEVER listen to "live" broadcasts with the S50??? Not even while it's docked in the Car kit or Home Kit? WTF??????

robdam misquoted the original article. what it actually says is: "Unlike traditional radio or even XM's MyFi, the S50 wearable part can't receive live broadcasts when not plugged into its satellite-receiving dock."

I think that's pretty clear.
No I did not misquote the article. Maybe the article had it wrong, but I copied/pasted the article.
Sorry robdam - that's my mistake. I didn't realize that the author revised the article after it was posted.
No problem! We're all on the same team! Thanks for the follow up.

At least the S50 out of the box IS a satellite radio and can also take recorded content with you.
Exactly Manco, very well said.

And YES Casual Fan it's a Portable because I say so, making your statement that its not bogus.

Selective bolding is easy...

NEW YORK – August 25, 2005 – SIRIUS Satellite Radio today announced the debut of its first wearable satellite radio, the SIRIUS S50, which allows users to capture and store up to 50 hours of SIRIUS content, or a mix of SIRIUS programming and MP3/WMA files, enabling listening on the go."
We just have to agree to disagree. Let's see how many newbies come on board here after buying the S50 and then bitch about no live programming and misleading advertising.

Will the S50 have the ability to "send/copy/transfer" stored music to a PC as mp3 or wma or other format? I understand it can import playlists. Thank you.

Very unlikely because of copyright issues. If you want to copy a song out of it you would have to record it by connecting it to the line input of the computer.

On the site about the S50 on Sirius.com it says that you will not be able to do this.

You won't be able to record from the audio output of the S50? It might not be approved, but I don't see how it wouldn't work technically.

People are going to bitch that goes without saying, heck you are doing it now and don't even have one. But I don't see the advertising as that misleading. Clearly your definition of portable isn't the same as mine and others. Live reception isn't required to be portable. Would it be nice, absolutely, but knowing what I do and having used the XM2GO tuners, I think this was the right way for Sirius to go and the rest is up to marketing and packaging.

While it would work great for me, I don't see myseld dropping that much $$$ on one.

I would love to be able to record Laura Ingraham and Tammy Bruce each day while I am in with a client and then replay them when I am back in the car. I have my Starbase wired hot, and I would do the S50 the same way.

I too was a little upset with it not being able to play live content as I listen to Howard and my work day starts at 6:30am. However, I realise that reception would be a huge problem. After much thought, I came to the conclusion that Sirius did the right thing by going after the iPod market. It gives you more of a choice in music listening. I think the S50 will fall short for 2 reasons. It should have had at least 2gb of flash memory and it's price is just too high to given it only has 1gb or flash memory. It should have been in the $250 range. Just my .02

I don't think any of us would argue with you on this point. I totally agree, but I also think giving the lower cost of the XM2GO tuners, the lower pricing point for the XM neXus you'll see this baby drop in price like a stone shortly after it is released.

Default Whew!!

This post just saved me several hundred dollars! I can already record Sirius online to my generic mp3 player...What I thought was going to be a "Walkman" like Sirius unit and that I would be able to receive live signals without the unit being docked. I can already do whatever this new unit is offering. I'm VERY disappointed.

Sure there will be some disappointed people. If it was a live device that lost signal and could only record 5 hours, there would also be some disappointed people. No matter what the device is, there are tradeoffs and limiatations.

I'm sure there will be others where they like the tradeoffs Sirius made on the S50 and will use it as designed.

I find it interesting that XM has just announced ANOTHER NeXus-type device, which has MP3 capabilities but NO live reception on the go.

Now if the S50 concept of "no live reception on the go" is as bad as its critics suggest, why has Sirius's competitor now announced TWO similar units?
