Default A look at the design of the S50

[img=left:737a23f52e]http://angelique.typepad.com/casa_de_angelique/images/siriuss50.jpg[/img:737a23f52e]Business Week is reporting today on Ziba, the company that helped research the S50 to determine its shape, size, and features. It included a visit to 39 homes across the country to have consumers figure out what they wanted in a satellite radio. The battery life was targeted to last the length of a cross-country flight, and they exceeded their goal. There were 19 different prototype foam units to determine the exact design for the unit. And there is the simplification. Ziba also realized how confusing a lot of MP3 players are, so they decided to make Sirius's player simple to use from right out of the box, with only one main button.

Read more about it in Business Week.

"This led to the S50's most surprising -- and controversial -- feature: Unlike traditional radio or even XM's MyFi, the S50 can't receive live broadcasts. It plugs into a satellite-receiving dock, determines which three Sirius channels you listen to the most, and downloads 1 gigabit, or up to 50 hours, of content (thus, the S50 name). Users can also program it to record certain regular shows or upload their favorite MP3 music files."

Umm, is this right? I can NEVER listen to "live" broadcasts with the S50??? Not even while it's docked in the Car kit or Home Kit? WTF??????

The "satellite-receiving dock" would be the car or home kit!

Incorrect.

The only time you can listen to real-time streaming is when the S50 is in either the home or car dock.

That's what I thought. That is not what this article says, however.

It's clearly a badly worded sentence, or flat our wrong. How can the S50 learn and record your 3 favorite channels if you can't ever listen "live"??

It can listen live in car or home cradles.

It's pretty obvious to me what they are saying. I'm sorry you feel the need to be sarcastic. What that entire paragraph is describing is how the unit plays satellite when OUT of the docking cradle in standalone mode. I can't believe how many people see this as confusing.

I can see where Sirius/SatRadio newbies might be confused by the wording in the article, Bill.

The article should've clearly stated something like "the S50 can't receive live content on the go, but can when it's plugged into a home or car dock."

Default S50 can solve some problems.

For me, the S50 might be a way around a big problem I have. I can't get a signal in my building at work, just way too much steel, and concrete and no windows, if the S50 records programming at least I would be able to have a way of listening to it inside that building even if its not live, it sure would beat what I can get now, and thats nothing.

That my friend is the moral of the story.

Well, it would work for me in that I could let it sit in the home dock for an hour or two and record while I'm doing whatever at home...then I could go the gym and listen to the recorded content while I'm working out.
I mean, it may be better to listen to it live, but it won't make too much of a difference if I listen to Octane or something. That being said, I probably won't get the S50. But I think it definately serves a purpose and can be a great product.

You read my mind.

That's the exact same problem I have, which is why the S50 is looking better every day. 50 hours of recording time will get me through the work week without having to reload content.

The recording time on the XM2Go units won't even get me through one day at work without having to reload.
