Default Sirius Canada lineup/sub price announced!

Sirius Canada announced they will carry 100 channels, up from the 80 previously announced. Channels will include 60 music channels, Martha, Cosmo, Raw Dog, Laugh Break, OutQ, and the following 10 Canadian Channels(5 french; 4 english; 1 multilingual):

[img=right:6f9b8963b8]http://www.siriusbackstage.com/forum/album_pic.php?pic_id=798[/img:6f9b8963b8]CBC Radio One - Canada's top-rated radio news and information source, featuring national and international headlines, in-depth business, political and arts reports and award-winning documentaries.

Iceberg Radio - commercial free Canadian Rock provided by Standard Broadcasting and programmed by leading Canadian music programmer Liz Janik.

Hardcore Sports Radio - Canadian sports news and talk provided by Score Media delivers sports information to the Canadian sports fan 24-7.

Première Plus - A Radio-Canada channel providing French language daily reports and magazines covering news, current affairs and culture at home and abroad.

Infoplus - All French language news 24 hours a day, combining the best of Radio-Canada and public broadcasters from around the world, including Radio France Internationale.

bandeapart - a Radio-Canada channel dedicated to the best emerging Francophone pop, rock, electronica, hip-hop, punk and world music.

Rock Velours - A French-language channel playing the best Canadian soft rock provided by Astral.

Energie(2) - A French-language channel playing pop, modern rock and urban music in both French and English provided by Astral.

RCI Plus - Radio Canada International programming for Canadians in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Russian, Ukrainian and Mandarin, which will be enhanced by programs from around the globe.

Interestingly, Stern does not seem to be included. It is not known whether that is a mistake in the press release, or if he will not be on the Canadian lineup.

Sirius Canada will start with a sub price of $14.99CAN/month, and is expected to launch next month. Futureshop is currently taking preorders, and Best Buy, the Source, and others will be selling receivers by the time service launches next month.

I'm so confused

So will channels be cut because of this?

Is it the radio that will determine what channels it can get, thus a radio bought at Best Buy canada will not get howard stern? So in the future will there be radio floating around out there that don't get all the channels?

While I don't know about channel cuts, the radio will get the service based on the address you subscribe with. So if you use a British Columbia address on receiver 000123456789, it will get the Canadian lineup; if you use a CA address, it will receive the US lineup.

Nick: I would assume that the Canadian channels are carried on the US lineup. It would not make sense to just broadcast them in CA, since it is with the same bandwidth as the sats, unless they found a way to eek out more bandwidth by having separate content on US and Canadian repeaters, so instead of having 3 broadcasts(2 sats and repeaters) at 4.166 MHz each, you could have the repeater broadcasting 3.9 MHz, and the other two having 4.3 MHz each for spectrum, with the repeaters able to carry less since they don't have to have traffic/weather/extra music stations along with all the Canadian content.

I'm liking CBC Radio 3, especially if they play stuff from Broken Social Scene, Arcade Fire, New Pornographers, Wolf Parade, etc. That would kick LOC's butt, for sure.

I'll bet we can kiss WRN goodbye, since RCI picks that up overnight.

Just got off the phone with Sirius Customer Service and they said when Sirius Canada launches, it will not affect the US line up. So im guessing we are not going to be getting CBC Radio or anything

I was under the impression that US subs would be getting 5 or so canadian channels as part of the deal... probably to make canadian govt. happy. Always take what customer service says with a grain of salt, especially when it comes to content.

All I like to see is, we better not loose any channels and I like to see some of the Canada channels on the U.S. lineup!

I think the CS person meant that no current channels will be deleted when Sirius Canda comes. Not that we should believe CS.

But doesn't Sirius have 65 music channels already? I wonder which ones will be cut. But they also say 100 channels in total and they don't come nearly close to listing them all out, so there still could be room for my Fox News (if they are continued to carry on Sirius at all). I never held out any hope for US talk radio being added to the Sirius Canada channels.

There can only be 9 real channels for every Canadian channel they have, according to Canadian law. Hence, there will only be 90 US channels. My guess is that Canadian distribution will be determined by whether a) the channel/shows wants to grant Sirius the rights to, and 2) the cost of doing so. Since Sirius can't bring them all over to Canada due to limited # of channels, they will likely pick what is most desired and what is the cheapest. Fox may not grant them the right, or might want money for it.

Yes, that's true. 90 US channels and 10 Canuck ones. Apologies, yes I meant 100 in total. But with Sirius having something like 120 US channels already, that means 1/4 of the US service will have to be cut. Which particular channels will be in that 1/4 will determine for me whether I switch over or admit I was wrong in supporting SiriusCanada and keep my current sub. True that, I hadn't thought that such decisions might be based not only on potential for ratings, but also on whether the rights would cost them too much money.

BTW for anybody interested, this article seems to indicate that Stern will not be a part of the Canadian Sirius, at least initially.

Not a factor for me, but will undoubtedly be a factor for many in determining whether to sub with a US address or not.

I really so issue with bandwidth. DTV uses "spot beam" when using your local channels being carried on satellite. 2 local TV stations using same channel/transponder and bandwidth, but just spot beamed to different areas of the U.S. depending on where that local TV station signal needs to be at. Spot beam all Canadian channels to Canada using same bandwidth being used by the U.S. Channels.
