Default No Existing Channels to Get Axed with Sirius Canada Launch

[img=right:cb4b9dd89f]http://www.siriusbackstage.com/forum/album_pic.php?pic_id=803[/img:cb4b9dd89f]Sirius Backstage can confirm that while there will be 10 new Canadian channels, no existing US channels will be lost. This is good news to those that were concerned about what would need to be "cut" in order to make room for the Canadian content.

It has also been learned that the Sirius radios sent to Canadian resellers will have settings that allow them to only get the Canadian content. No surprise here but it sounded like these radios may not be capable of being activated for US channel lineup.

Sirius Canada launch will happen next month sometime before Christmas.

Yea, but some members have posted that there has been a SQ decrease. Guess that's ok for the time being.

How could they know that if the Canadian content has not been added yet?

A related question, then (that may have been posed and/or answered elsewhere) is: Will existing U.S. subscribers receive the "Canadian" channels?

I can easily imagine this to be the case: Sirius engineers allocate and reserve bandwidth for Canadian channels. They tweak the original channels to minimize impact (but sharp eared listeners detect it, anyway). The Canadian channels are on 'null' channel numbers that current US receiver ignore. When Canadian channels come on line, their receivers will be activated with instructions to decompress and decode certain channels and ignore all the rest.

Canadians who bought and subscribed in the US won't get those Canadian channels. In a fit of pique, they'll call Sirius-Canada to complain. The SatRad Police will come to their doors in the wee hours of the morning, sieze thier equipment, and make fun of their strange looking children.

That should explain everything we are seeing and hearing. Any questions?

Some quotes from Sirius Canada's site:

Quote:
American audiences will have access to a further perspective on Canada and Canadian values through the insightful news and public affairs programming of CBC Radio One and Première Chaîne de Radio-Canada.

Distribution of Radio-Canada’s La Première Chaîne and Bandeapart, dedicated to new music and emerging talent, will allow French speaking Canadians access to their favorite programs no matter where they are throughout Canada and the U.S.

Canadian performers, writers and creators will gain broader exposure to millions of subscribers across Canada and the U.S

I highly doubt that we are this close to launch and the Canada channels are not up on the birds. Just because our radios are not yet authorized to get them doesnt mean they arent there for testing purposes.

It is my opinion and there is no confirmation one way or the other, but the answer is NO. I don't think we'll even see the Canadian Channels on our tuners. Apparently the Canadian tuner will get their own chipset that will allow them to only pick the 100 channel Sirius agreed to in the deal. It is possible that Sirius will do a channel update that will allow us to get them, but I am not sure they are. It truly is an interesting question.

As I understand it... the carriage of the Canadian Channels in the US was part of the license agreement between Sirius Canada and the CRTC.

This is great news. Also, no sound quality change at all. I have a PNP2 at home and a not so great kenwood tuner/deck in my car.

I remember reading back in august (or something like that) about a new compression technology that will allow more channels without loss of SQ.

You are correct v1, but that new technology may just go to video or it may be spread out to other things, we don't know.

Good news. Also, remember, these Canucks get to leave their igloos quite often these days. Hoards of 'em head over the border in Detoit, Buffalo, Washington state, and other points south. They even use motor vehicles , as opposed to dog sleds, en masse and head to Florida in the winter. I am sure they would not be too happy to have their Sirius receivers not receive Candian contact when they enter Yankeeland.

That cool were getting all 10 of there channels, found on Sirius Canada

But one problem is when Sirius looses NHL, Canada Sports won't be able to simulcast the games, I guess?
