Default Recap of the SIRIUS for Dummies Tech Help Show

[img=left:6a5c7f253d]http://www.siriusbackstage.com/forum/album_pic.php?pic_id=852[/img:6a5c7f253d]This is a recap of this evenings questions and answers asked on the Howard 100 Tech Help Show. Hosted by Lance Rodman with guest Richie Valencen, Michael Moore, and John from Ultrasounds in Long Island.

Question: If I have a radio with an FM modulator, can I listen to SIRIUS on any regular radio in my home? How do I know if my radio has an FM modulator?
Answer: Most home construction will allow the signal to pass through the wall of your home so you can listen from most any radio in your home. Car kits have FM modulation. Home kits do not. If you don't have FM modultation in your radio, you can add it on.

Question: Does my antenna need to be outside?
Answer: For best reception, it should be outside. Some urban areas have ground repeaters that allow you to keep your antenna inside.

Question: When will SIRIUS have a truly portable radio?
Answer: Soon. SIRIUS plans to announce this radio soon, but there isn't a timeframe for release yet.

Question: Truck driver on the west coast has drop-outs while on I-15 near Las Vegas.
Answer: Richie offered to take down this guys specific drop out locations to investigate.

Question: After being alerted of a song in Song Seek, when it's over, how do I get back to the previous channel? Is there a jump back feature?
Answer: Depending on your radio, some have a jump channel for you most favorite channel. Others have a previous channel button.

Question: How do I get to the other sets of presets on my radio?
Answer: There is a band button that allows you to cycle between the bands.

Question: While driving through New York airport, I get a lot of static on my Sportster Replay using the FM modulator.
Answer: Suggested he purchase a wired FM modulator which should be about $24.

Question: How can I swap from XM to SIRIUS?
Answer: There is a product called Direct Connect for GM owners that will allow you to use your factory radio without the need for FM modulation or the possibility of static.

Question: What is a ground repeater?
Answer: There are challenging urban areas that prevent the satellite signal from being received by your car's antenna. The ground repeater network is there to suplement the satellite service. Your antennas can pick up three signals at a time: the two satellites overhead and the ground repeater.

Question: Does SIRIUS plan on releasing an antenna repeater for your home so I can listen to different content on different radios.
Answer: You will need to have a radio for each channel that you wish to tune into. There are some high-end products that will allow you to tune into 3 or 6 channels at once. This is accomplished by the radio and not by any repeater.

Question: Will Howard Stern be streamed on the Internet?
Answer: It is coming. When we do it, we want to make sure it's done right. We also want to make sure only paying customers will have access to it. No timeframe was given.

Question: When I get in the car, I hear a song that was saved and wonder if this song seek was erased. I try to save it again and am told it is already saved.
Answer: If you just turned on the radio, it may not have known the song was playing since the alerts come at the beginning of the song.

Question: Are there software updates available for the S50?
Answer: Install My SIRIUS Studio on your PC and watch your email for alerts to let you know to look for an update. If you don't get a notice, try to update once a month or so.

Question: If I try to add a second radio online, will I get the discounted $6.99 rate?
Answer: Login with your username and password and you will get the correct rate.

Question: Is lifetime for the radio or the person?
Answer: It's for the radio. If the radio has a defect while the radio is under warranty, we'll transfer your radio to new service. If you like to have the newest radio, we'll allow you to transfer you service up to 3 times for a transfer fee of $75.

Question: Can I have SIRIUS in a business?
Answer: SIRIUS will allow you to have the music services playing in your business. SIRIUS pays your licensing fees. We have the best price and content. It's about $300 a year.

Question: Signal trouble in an apartment. I can almost set my watch to when I'll lose my signal.
Answer: The satellites do move. The drop out may be when the satellites hand off. Sometimes you'll have to have permission to place an antenna outside of an apartment. You may wish to try aiming your antenna better. Sirius.com has an antenna aiming page on the site.

Question: What is the strangest installation you've seen?
Answer: Son gave grandmother SIRIUS boombox without receiver and Customer Care spent about 20 minutes trying to find the ESN for her.

Now there's a novile concept. Let's have a show where we don't know all the answers, and title it "for all you stupid fvcks that can't figure out the simple instructions in the manual or on our website..." show. Sorry, but this is something I would expect as a parody on Howard's show, not something from corporate.

I couldn't believe they stated that your antenna didn't have to be on the roof, but could actually be inside the house.

Then they hype the GM SiriusConnect which hasn't been released, has been pushed back at least five times since the initial announcement, and still doesn't have a solid release date. Even Microsoft isn't that bad !

They also stated that you get a discounted activation rate for additional receivers on your primary account, which you do not. And then there's this blurb from Sirius' website:
  • "10. I just bought a second receiver. Can I activate it online, as I did with the first one?
To ensure that you’re taking advantage of the special $6.99 monthly rate for an additional receiver, please contact Customer Care
for activation. While the first receiver can be activated online without problems, additional units demand the attention of a representative.
    "
The strangest installation was his neighbor (construction worker) who had glued an external antenna to the top of his van, and had the boombox mounted on the dash.

The free receiver exchange is for the life of the receiver, not just while the receiver is under warranty (which is only one year).

Good idea, but very piss poor marketing and preparation. You don't do a live call-in show, and not prep. Dopie and Asswipe will have a field day with this one tomorrow...

I forgot to listen, and by what Storm-Chaser said I may be glad I did. It's really sad when someone at a fan site knows more about how Sirius works than Sirius themselves (and there are many of those people here). Why SBS hasn't tried to get someone here that lives in the NYC area on is beyond me. :\

What about the real questions people seem to be asking?

Like: what bit rates are used on what channels? How come some people claim great stereo separation while others don't? If the car next to me picks up Howard 'cause of my FM transmitter happens to be that strong, can they sue Sirius for hearing things they may not want to hear? Can they sue me? Can Howard sue me for being a pirate? What about the FCC? Ok, these aren't really technical questions, but hey...

Oh yeah, and one more question: I shoved my antenna up my ass and now I don't get a good signal, what should I do?

All I gotta say is WOW! We know so much more about Sirius than they do. That scares me actually. The questions and answers were so simplistic for such a complex service. It seems as though the calls were screened.

As they say, there's a silver lining in every cloud...

Maybe we need to start promoting this site as "THE" place to get answers to your questions all-Sirius !

Ok I'm the guy that called the show on tuesday night (That's right I'm Steve From Washington) and asked the question about adding a 2nd radio online. and I just today did what they said to do on the show and I got the $6.99 a month discount. so the guy I was talking to was right.

Please read what I posted. There are TWO fees associated with each receiver you subscribe. A one-time activation fee and a recuring periodic subscription fee (ie. the monthly/quarterly/annual subscription rate). I did use the term "activation rate", because that's what [they] said on-air. So again:
  • activation fee

    activation fee

    activation fee
not the subscription fee/rate, but the
  • activation fee

    activation fee

    activation fee
So, how much were you charged for the activation fee? Was it the same as the activation fee for the original receiver, or was it discounted?

Default New subscribers--'dummies'

Yes, I myself and quite technically adept and had no problem understanding how to set up sat rad---hardwire the car, run the antenna under the molding, etc., run an antenna outdoors for the home, etc.

Someone like my father or my wife, if they had bought sat rad on their own would have been somewhat baffled if the setup didn't go 'just so' or if it didn't go exactly as per instrictions. Many people are not technically adept, don't realize the need for an outdoor antenna (even the Sirius instruction booklet says a 'good' alternative is to put the antenna in a window at home...sorry, doesn't work for my house but an hour or two a day, I had to get mine outside.)

I could see many people becoming frustrated, especially with a home install.
