Voiced my opinion on the PRI problem too. And I signed up the DAY they dropped the farking channel for the specific purpose of having PRI and no commercials on the music. Argh. Someone please just tell me this is one giant mistake. I paid $130 for a receiver and another $60 for 3 months of service and activation for a service that dropped one of the main reasons for me signing up.

Post When will we get (back) a Folk Channel?

With all of the niche progamming available on Sirius, it is (still) shocking to me that Sirius continues to snub the folk community by refusing to offer a folk channel. The coffee shop, which plays what it calls "acoustic rock" and such "folk" luminaries as Sting [gagging reflexively], just doesn't cut it. The blugrass channel, while wonderful to have, isn't enough.

In fact, there really should be TWO folk channels, in addition to the bluegrass channel: a traditional channel that caters to the purists and a "new" folk channel that includes singer-songwriters, folk-rock, celtic & celtic-rock and the whole range of programming (including the traditional stuff) now limited to the Kennedy's Dharma Cafe (which is on Disorder, not the coffee shop, which undercuts Sirius' claim that the coffee shop IS the new folk channel).

Why am I on Sirius when XM has Dylan and continues to offer a folk channel? Good question. The Answer: Howard Stern and, with Dharma cafe, Celtic Crush and the bluegrass channel, more folk music than available on terrestrial radio. (I am in Philadelpia, which means that my Sirius unit goes silent on Sunday nights for the Folk Show with Gene Shay, the folk genius who considered coming to Sirius, but who declined when they refused to pay more than a token fee for his talent. He says that a friend, who does a folk show elsewhere, gives his show away for free on XM.)

I will keep after the good folks at Sirius to push them to create at least one folk station (one that covers the whole gamut) & I hope that the rest of you, whether you are full folkies or just want the option to listen from time to time, do the same.

If you really just recently signed-up and bought the hardware, you might be able to get your money back. If you call CS and don't take no for an answer and be sure to tell them that you subscribed specifically for PRI, there's a chance they'll let you cancel without the early cancellation fee and they'll pro-rate the remaining months on your contract. You should also be able to return the hardware and get your money back.

So there is no buyer's remorse clause that allows you to cancel within 30 days for any reason?

Maybe contacting PRI will gain a bit of momentum in getting it back as well..

http://www.pri.org/contact_pri.html

There's a XM/Sirius option there...

Thumbs up

The old PRI channel didn't seem to play that much PRI-exclusive content, and seemed to relay BBC alot and constantly replay the same eight weekly PRI programs all week long, so this is a good decision on Sirius's part.

NPR Talk and NPR Now are now playing PRI programming, such that it is.
XMPR on XM plays most of the regular PRI programming, too.

The channel shouldn't be missed.

I chose Sirius for the same reason and I'm very disappointed.

If StarLite and Standard Time don't float your boat you ought to check out XM Escape on XM channel 78. That channel seems to be identical to Music Choice Easy Listening and Muzak Environmental East (which are mostly instrumental adaptations, a la elevator music if that's what you were talking about).

I'm guessing spa73 is out of the question then.

I want to listen to To The Best Of Our Knowledge for my morning commute. PRI is gone, so I can no longer listen.

I would suggest that for this long time subscriber, the channel is well and truly missed.

Look again, friend.

"The World", "To the Point", "Brian Lehrer", "DW Newslink" and about a dozen more. All programs NOT on either NPR channel and no longer available on Sirius or XM.

The only people who think this is a good decision either work for Sirius or think public radio is a Communist plot.

Disappointed that they dropped the bitrate back to talk-quality for the NPR streams. I guess they were just teasing us when they raised them for a while.

From another thread:

Now 105 Laugh Break seems to have these shows that were on 136 PRI, says sirius.com:

Le Show
Saturday 7 pm – 8 pm ET
Sunday 10 pm – 11 pm ET

Michael Feldman’s Whad’Ya Know?
Saturday 9 pm – 11 pm ET

You mean like the two subscriptions I bought when I found that Sirius carrried WSM?
Pardon my cynicism, but this hillbilly simply "don't have much use" for Sirius right now....
