This is about more than charging your iPod. It allows you to play videos from the iPod on the seatback screen.

A 110v outlet would allow people to bring on all sorts of entertainment devices like portable DVD players and such. Not to mention that you could power your laptop without a funky expensive adapter. One cool feature that I've seen on one in flight entertainment package (I actually work in that industry ) is a video input that allows you to hook up any video device to the in-seat display. That plus a standard power outlet would give the most bang for the buck and doesn't limit passengers to just ipods.

By the way, the in-flight internet sevice that is currently being shut down by Boeing was KICK ASS. I worked on that for a while in Seattle and got to use it on a test flight before they launched with Lufthansa. I just remember wondering how the heck they were going to make a profit with what they were going to charge the passgngers. Sadly I was correct.

And to stay more on topic I think Sirius should market themselves to IFE vendors for integration with their systems but that can be pretty expensive when you're talking about designing and certifying the hardware to fly on commercial aircraft. But it would be a perfect fit to provide a full audio content suite for an IFE system.

They already have 70 percent of the automobile market for 2007 (we're not talking AUX ports, folks, we're talking iPod dock connections in your glove box that you can control through your car stereo. As much as I like XM (and Satellite Radio as a whole) that's the first feature I'll be looking for in a new car.

So what would be the next logical step for Apple to take? iTunes (not JUST iPod) integrated in partnership with car stereo makers? Maybe they partner with/buy out XM or Sirius and put all their music channels on iTunes internet radio. I do wish they would promote the Internet radio that's available on the iTunes player. It's a nice feature to have when you want formats that neither sat company has. I'm listening to prog rock on Aural Moon right now.

And even radio margaritaville (the same thing that's on Sirius) is available online at no charge. Wouldn't do you much good in the car, however.

This is why both satradio companies need to look beyond the car and home radios for their service. Another reason why Sirius' online presence makes total sense. But they don't seem to be promoting it like they should.

XM is also partnered with AirTran (the first airline to go satellite radio)...they're now giving every passenger a voucher for a free XM unit (while supplies last).
