I'll have to see how this goes and what channels are offered. I could see something for my kid, but how long until he wants to watch sports instead of cartoons, so I'll have to wait and see.

Well I like the idea of video. This is something that can increase ARPU. For the argument that the bandwidth should have been used for more radio stations. How would this have increased revenue? Video may even help the OEM install rate. And may be a plus when making contracts with new OEMs. If GM wants video when their XM contract expires maybe they will go with Sirius.

I'm a big Adult Swim fan as well, but I really don't see that happening. They're obviously going for the young child demographic and a late-night animated program aimed exclusively at young adults doesn't exactly fit that profile. Hopefully I'm wrong because that would be the only good thing about this, IMHO.

I hope for the same thing, and a video portable. I would love being able to DVR Aqua Teen and Robot Chicken to watch later.

Maybe since they have the NFL on the radio. They will have the NFL Network on video.

I agree with the first part, but my feeling is XM will have a video solution soon enough to keep GM happy from that point of view. But if Sirius gets an exclusive with Nick and Cartoon network, that might make XM's job of getting desireable childrens content more difficult.

I think Sirius should focus on radio and not get into niche programming. The best use of those channels would be to broadcast selected video from Sirius channels such as Howard, Bubba, Playboy, Maxim, Sirius Stars and Raw Dog. I would pay for that.

If they have some good programming for kids, I would subscribe to this for the wifes van. It would really be great if they had Sesame Street and some other programming for kids that would be for kids age 1-8. The most I would pay is another $10 a month for one channel and perhaps $15 for three channels.

TX, Orbitcast is reporting that the video option will be an additional $6.99/month for all the channels.

When would you watch that? Do you spend a lot of time riding in your car, as opposed to driving? That might make sense in a world where we all car-pooled to work, but I'll bet if you counted cars you passed Monday morning that had backseat passengers, 90% of them would be kids.

I do wonder the business sense of this move. Sprint is rolling out their mobile wimax network starting this year and expects to cover the majority of the population some time in 2008. They are already working with Mobitv to program video on it. With individual broadband connections they could potentially have an infinite number of channels (not sure if their's a bottlenect from the cell site to the internet?). So the market for 3 kids channels is probably going to be limited to OEM installs. But apparenlty Dodge is already planning just that so maybe this is a way to make their automotive partners happy?

If I recall GM's onstar already has a deal with Sprint where you can use your sprint phone number in your onstar car. So I'm assuming that onstar already uses sprints PCS network. I'd think if GM wants video then they could work with sprint to give people 100's of channels in the back seat over the wimax network. It wouldn't be nationwide like a sat delivered service but most of the soccer moms leave in populated areas and drive no more then a few miles from home everyday so it would be workable.

Sat radio really needs to become all abut the content to compete going forward. With EVDO the GSM equal, and WiMax, the cell phone people are going to get the ability to do all the digital music they want. So the difference will need to be the content and quality.

Although they may cover >50% of the population by 2008, the likelihood that you'll be able to make a drive of more than, say, 25 miles with 100% uninterrupted service seems like it'll take much longer. Even today, there are plenty of *interstates* where cell phone coverage has the occasional dead zone.

You're correct, of course, that for many people WiMax might start to deliver a viable solution as well... but I suspect that it'll be at least 2010 before that happens, whereas XM and Sirius are rolling out video this year.

Man I wish Sat Radio/TV was a three fold a package.
1. Sports...ESPN, NFL
2. Kids Programming...Cartoon Network, since I'd be hoping for ESPN maybe a deal with Disney and ABC could be found.
3. Howard and other uncensored material. As mentioned Raw Dog clips, Maxim, Playboy, whatever...but how about uncensored music videos?

I'm in my 20s have a kid, love sports, and when I don't have the kid with me I would love some uncensored content.

The big question here is who is gonna get the extra tuner, antenna and screen that is going to be compatable with this. With a decent antenna you can get regular TV ,I used to watch CBS going state to state with a hitachi TV and a simple rabbit ears radio shack car antenna,So wheres the market? You even have cheap car dvd players now for $79.
When am I going to watch? When my Girlfriend learns how to drive stick.
